The Immigrant Learning Center, Inc. (ILC) of Malden, MA is a non-profit organization that helps immigrants and refugees become successful workers, parents and community members through direct service programs and public education. Our direct service program provides free year-round English classes to immigrant and refugee adults in Greater Boston. The ILC further supports immigrants through the Public Education Institute, which informs Americans about the economic and social contributions of immigrants in our society.
History
Established in 1992.
The ILC opened its doors in Malden, Massachusetts, on November 9, 1992, with three teachers, 60 students, three classrooms and a waitlist of 80 applicants. The school grew quickly. In 1994, The ILC moved into its current facility at 442 Main Street where it now occupies more than 20,000 square feet of space that includes nine classrooms, a 24-station computer lab and several offices. The school has educated more than 6,000 immigrants who come from 109 countries, reside in 74 Greater Boston communities and speak more than 64 languages.
In 2003 The ILC expanded its mission in to include educating the public about the positive impact immigrants have on the country, the economy and our communities. Today the ILC Public Education Institute uses a research-based approach to create reports, articles, presentations and conferences for researchers, educators, policy makers, media and the general public.
