Description

Specialties

Founded in 1934, the mission of Hui No’eau Visual Arts Center is to unlock creativity through exceptional visual arts education and enhance this endeavor through the preservation of the historical Kaluanui estate. Translated as «people coming together for a common purpose — for the development of artistic skill and the wisdom which derives from that expression,» Hui No’eau has been a gathering place for some of the greatest artistic minds and hands contributing to Maui arts and culture. One of the last of its kind on Maui, Hui No’eau is a 501©(3) nonprofit, non-degree granting, community-based, member-driven arts education organization offering open access to quality visual arts instruction by teaching artists. The Art Studios at Hui No’eau are the only public studios on Maui that offer year-round access to fine art equipment and technical supervision for all who choose to participate. We also rent our event space for weddings, baby showers, bridal showers, meetings and more!

History

Established in 1934.

Situated on the historic estate of Kaluanui, a home built in 1917 designed by C.W. Dickey for Hui founder Ethel Baldwin, Hui No’eau’s expansive, open-air space consists of various housing structures, a stable, a visitor’s cottage, and a garage that have since been transformed into fully functioning working artist studios, exhibition galleries and classrooms. We have also built several new studios. The collective space offers an invaluable quality to all teachers, students, visitors and interested members of our community. The architectural features of the home exemplify Dickey’s distinctive style.

Hui No’eau’s buildings and grounds are free and open to the public 7 days a week. The expansive gardens serve as an educational centerpiece in the Maui community, offering a fully accessible, vital open space for residents and visitors to come, learn and enjoy. Hui No’eau serves 16,000+ people a year. These visitors and students visit the Hui’s campus, gardens, gallery and special events.
