Specialties

In business for over 90 years, Wells Print & Digital Services is one of Madison’s most experienced commercial printers. Wells offers one to four color printing, bindery, and direct mail services. As the printing industry continually changes, Wells helps to integrate its clients’ marketing strategies using the latest in print and digital technologies.

History

Established in 1922.

1922: Will Wells and Hugo Schumacher came together to form Quality Printer, located at 107 South Fairchild Street in Madison, WI. Their equipment list included a single hand-fed Craftsman press. After 5 years it was renamed and incorporated as Wells Printing Company, Inc.

1936: Wells Printing moved to a new facility, located at 121 West Main Street along with new equipment, including a Linotype typesetter and Madison’s first Heidelberg press.

1942: Will Wells turned the business over to his son Rufus. Rufus proceeded to build Wells Printing into one of southern Wisconsin’s leading printing companies.

1966: Rufus Wells retired and sold the business to long-time employee Carl Schorr and his business partner Dick Massey.

1979: Carl Schorr’s wife Janet and his son Thomas bought out Dick Massey. Once again Wells returned to a family owned and operated printing shop.

1985: Wells moved to 3121 Watford Way, giving Wells a new, clean building with plenty of room to grow.

Meet the Business Owner

Tom S.

Business Owner

Tom came on board full-time during a down-period in the company’s history. Tom didn’t have the luxury of waiting for years of training and experience to ease him into the business. He literally embarked on a crash course to understand all phases of the printing industry. Because Tom was willing to immerse himself in the long hours and days required to really learn the business, he became an invaluable resource for Wells Print and Digital Services. Tom’s knowledge in computer applications, effectiveness in customer relations, and keen sense for industry trends is a large reason why Wells is such a strong and viable company.
