Ultrazone Laser Tag

We’ve played Ultrazone many times over the years. It’s a great activity for the whole family. With an icy day over spring break, there wasn’t a better place to be today.
The game action itself is a hoot. Shoot other teams, shoot wall targets, find and destroy bases. That’s the basics. When you’re done, you’ll see which team won, as well as individual scores and rankings. You also get a printout of every possible statistic you can think of (who you shot, where you shot them, who shot you, etc.)
They have improved on the experience since my last visit — new guns and vests plus the addition of wall targets. The lasers used to just be red dots in the distance, but now you see the laser line from your gun to the target. Pretty sweet.
Taking four kids (plus myself) for 3 games was nearly $ 100. That felt a bit steep, but we all had a good time. It’s not something we’ll do a lot, but it’s a good time for a special occasion. My older son will meet friends there for the 8pm-​midnight special on weekends for $ 24 (all you can play).
If you’re going during family hours (not late night, probably), you will run into smaller kids that aren’t as great at following the rules — like no «following» and no «camping». You’re just going to have to deal with that. Don’t let your emotions get the best of you — it’s a game, so just have fun and enjoy!

Customer service was not good at all. The workers here were very rude to us. They called our party up but never told us what to do or where to go. We had to ask and were told by two workers that we had to wait where we were, so wait we did, only to find out later that we were waiting in the wrong area. We told them that this was our first time there but do they care? No. Brook, the lady that we were talking to, told us that it is our fault for not knowing where to go. She said that we should have known to go to the briefing room. The two workers that told us to wait? Well, they stood off to the side and talked about how we were stupid and shouldn’t be complaining for something that is clearly our fault. Then they laughed about it and entered a back room.
We did play two games though. The first worker actually acted like he cared about working there. He made his rounds in the arena. He told my husband that no camping is allowed when there is no such rule like that. The second game, the worker just stood by the exit the whole time. She clearly didn’t care that people were running, shouting and camping.
As others stated, this is a teams only. If your group is very big, you will be split up. Be prepared for the sweat covered gear.

Family came in town and we decided to go here for the first time today, paid and waited for our time/​number to be called. She calls our number and we all huddled around and was ready to go. Since it was our first time there, no one knew exactly where to go or what to do, we asked one of the workers there who was just standing around if it was our turn to play since we been waiting, he stoops over and looks at the computer and tells us that YES, WE ARE STILL WAITING. So we waited a bit more than asked another worker who was standing around as well and watching the score screen, if we still had to wait. She NODS and replies that yes, we have to wait. The current players are finally done and they come out, we then find out that we were suppose to play along with the current teams. Confused we try to ask one of the workers, that we just wasted a game and our money standing there not knowing what to do and was told we had to wait. She by the name of BROOK, with an attitude tells us that we were suppose to go through the exit door and proceed from there. We told her, no one said anything to us, no one showed us where we were suppose to go, there were two doors and the one we were suppose to go through had a «FIRE EMERGENCY» exit over the door, making us think it might be a door to exit in case of a fire only and if we were to go through it would trigger the alarm like some places do. We told her that we asked two workers there if we had to wait and they replied yes, we had to wait. She said, well it’s not their fault. We weren’t trying to blame it on anyone, we just wanted to tell her why we missed a game and what she can do about it and that we weren’t happy about how they managed it over all. Simple as the fact that we are new there, we have no clue where to go and what to do and it would had been great if someone out of the 5 employees there that day would figure that there is a whole group of more than 10 standing there WITH THEIR TICKETS AND READY, HRMM, THEY MUST JUST BE STANDING THERE CAUSE THEY FEEL LIKE IT? She decided to give us a refund on the one game we missed, great thing I purchased one game for two people only and decided I wanted a refund and rather just spend that money elsewhere than at a place where the employees literally don’t care about serving their customers right. As if one employee giving bad customer service is not enough, the girl who rung everyone up has to come and join in by saying she called our number and no one told us to just stand there, and that she called our number again. No, she called our number ONCE and that was it. Annoyed and by far one of the worst customer service I have ever encountered in a long time, I am sure that based off of the other reviews this is a fun place to go to, but with employees like that it killed my mood to even want to have fun. The whole time of them bickering, not once did any of the employees say they were sorry for their terrible and rude service.

Love taking the kids here. The first time I took my son they explained everything very clearly and made him feel at ease. He loved it and we have been regulars ever since.

I’d been wanting to come here since I moved to Madison, but my boyfriend always said it was never worth the price. Well we went with a huge group a few weeks ago, and I’m pretty ok with never going before. I would never go here without some sort of coupon. With a large group of your friends, it’s pretty fun. I can’t imagine enjoying it much otherwise. Most of the staff was ok, but there was one who was playing with us for two games. She was just obnoxious and full of herself. Not going to lie, it was pretty satisfying seeing my boyfriend beat her each time. During one of the games there were a few people screaming at the top of their lungs for the entire game. Not my idea of fun. I’ll only be back if my friends really want to go. Otherwise I’m holding out for the new laser tag place that just opened. It seems much more my style.

The place is pretty big and the prices are fair. Brought a bunch of guys here ranging from 16 – 29 years old and they all had fun. Not much else to be said, come here if you’re looking for a good time.

We went for a friend’s birthday. We were dissapointed that the system wasn’t working properly, and no effort was made to correct the problem.
We had fun non-​the-​less, and plan on returning!

Have plans for laser tag. This place is the one.
Real fun at this place, they have three teams which makes it more interesting! I would definitely say this is a good place for laser tag! The only thing I would say is that the place is not that big, they only have laser tag.

Adrenaline pumping good fun.
We went to Ultrazone for my son’s birthday party and had not intended playing myself. Next thing I know I am «Red Avenger» with a group of kids, dads and tweens going through our intro and jazzed to be in a world of lasers. The staff were great at explaining the game, rules and for the most part those teens and tweens were listening.
Put on your laser pack, figure out your laser, and set off with your color team into the glow in the dark, music thumping course. 2 levels of maze, mirrors, ramps, it was all fun.
By the second game I had more tactics figured out, but what makes it fun is that every game are different players so its always new.
After 3 games everyone was having a blast (pun) and ready to refuel. I would say the adults had just as much fun as the kids. Well worth the money.
Definite repeat in my future.

I’m not at all ashamed to say that frequent this place late on weeknights with my mid-​20s friends.
It can be crowded at times, but it’s also just ridiculously fun, as long as everyone else you’re playing with is cool. Sure, sometimes you’re up against sore loser (or winner) teens, but as long as you remember that you are an adult, you’ll be ok.
Get the bases!

I have been here twice and for the most part I have had a lot of fun. A few things you should know beforehand. First, go earlier in the day if you don’t want to be absolutely destroyed by teenagers; especially if you have younger kids. I took my girlfriends six year old daughter and she had a hard time competing with teenagers who would shoot her relentlessly for the points. After the first game, I got her to follow me around and she did a lot better (Perhaps they felt differently about trying to pick on someone who is 6’5 and 250 Pounds and I could explain to her how to play). Secondly, it helps to have an understanding of how the game works. Most people score a lot of points because they can hit all four bases of the opposing colors. Even if you only have two teams playing, there are three colors and the other two colors opposing bases can still be shot. (I learned that after game 1). Despite some of these issues my girlfriend’s daughter still had a good time and the staff did a great job of catering to her. They also try and break the teams up so it wasn’t us against teenage laser tag assassins. Kudos to them for that. All in all, it was a good experience.

BUT
The kid loves the place (been 3x). Asked to switch the Bday party from WI Dells to this place to save money. Well 9insert drumroll) this place was more than a day at Mt. Olympus. WTH! $ 198 for a bday party but there are coupons in the Monthly Dollar Saver that comes in the mail which the kid staff members won’t tell you about. Anywhoo, I decided and declated — we’ll start at Laser Tag then go over to Chuck E Cheese as I don’t need their 1 topping Pizza Hut pizza that comes wtih the bday deal. And I knew we’d be coming from Brunch so the Adults don’t need to eat anyway.
Here’s what we got:
1) a bucky book to use the coupon.
2) didn’t use the coupon because the way it’s written is not how I interrupted it and I was sticking to my guns of sticking to the budget and only doing 1 game.
3) read the Unilocal reviews — prepared not to play
4) Adults are FREE on Sundays with every paid child. Went for this option and saved the newly purchase Bucky Book coupon.
5) We got teamed up with a Dad/​Son combo and WE WON!
Here’s how this place works:
1) Pay
2) Step towards the hall way to enter the instruction/​briefing room
3) Cute as in descriptive announcer (the word fails me now) tells us what to expect, asks questions, tries to get everyone hype!
4) Three rows of benches fill the room
5) You get to choose Red/​Yellow/​Blue team
6) The class is paced just right for a novice and the experts chirped in with their points and it wasn’t annoying. And one of the experts was «the kid» and I don’t think everything the kid does is cute — frankly — it’s overkill. Yeah~ I’m old school.
7) Pick up your vests in the next room. I didn’t get a wet sweaty vest like the other Unilocaler and I was on the look out for it. We went in right after 2 all male 8−10y/o bday party, too!
8) Start the game. It’s weird as in I thought the place would be bigger and I expected those real serious people but it all worked out. There’s levels and rooms and closets.
9) Turns and twists. Neon and UV lights. Good music for the vibe to get and keep the pulse going.
10) Game ends. You’re told to «follow my voice» to exit. THIS WAS HELPFUL.
11) Hang up your vest. Reclip the gun.
12) You’ll get a print out of the game scores/​hits/​winners annouced. Look up at the big screen to see everyone’s place and position.
We actually had fun (the adults and kids) and will go back when my other BFF comes to town.

Ditto to Amy B’s review. What more can be said? Really. She pretty much summed up the experience we had. I took a group of boys here for my son’s birthday and we had a blast.
My only reason for 4 stars instead of 5, there were a lot of younger kids there for multiple birthday parties. I can see grouping them together. But, there were also groups of much older kids, young adults really, that were obviously there for a serious death match competition. The staff did a good job of mixing up the teams to try and keep things fair but, there were just too many bigger people rampaging around and the younger kids didn’t get to enjoy it — they were being zapped mercilessly and spent most of their time being dead. Come on guys, really?
If you’re an older «kid» and go here, give the younger kids a break, okay? It’s dark, loud, they’re half your size and constantly being knocked over or pushed into walls. Let them enjoy it, too.

What the other reviewers have mentioned pretty much rings true. It’s fun, it can be crowded, etc.
What they haven’t told you is that they only have one large arena, and sometimes your group can get lumped in with other groups of people you don’t know. When we were there it was super crowded, and games were running every 20 minutes. So every 20 minutes your going in, you are putting on the vest of a sweaty person who just took it off. That’s right, they use the same vests over and over again, and by the time I had gone through there 3 times, I was putting on vests that were soaked with many different peoples sweat. (Mostly tween boys and adult men with tween boy mentalities.)
Why are they sweaty? Well because your running around and acting all commando. But also because it’s hot, steamy, and dark in there. (Get yer mind out of the gutter!) If you have spacial awareness problems, claustrophobia, or any array of mental disorders, you are going to freak out.
Also, if you are a sad, pathetic, unskilled schlub like me, and you get into a game with 37 other people at a time you have no chance. We’re talking about the the kind of people who take this so seriously, that they wear ski masks and have well organized game plans before then even get to the lobby. The kind of dudes that, when they tag you, and you laugh and smile all in good fun, they just stare at you like stone cold killers and then run away looking for their next victim in a sweaty vest.

First of all, there is no other place like this in the area, which automatically makes it great. You’ve got your black light maze arena with techno music. Even the bathrooms are lit in black light, so your pee glows (for every little boy’s joy).
This is the perfect place to throw your kids for a few hours, they never seem to get tired of it! The games take about a half hour to play, but they run games every fifteen minutes, so you never have to wait very long. The lobby is also filled with video games and vending machines to keep them busy.
No game is ever the same because of different people, different group make ups, etc.
The Game Masters are very entertaining, and do a good job of keeping control when annoying preteens are present. They monitor during the entire game to make sure everything is going smoothly.
Compared to any other birthday party providers, Ultrazone is top because the party hosts do absolutely everything for you. Parents can simply sit by and enjoy. Not only do the party hosts entertain the kids, serve the food, clean up, etc., they also take a list of the presents given for you and make sure everyone, especially the birthday kid, has a great time.
I’d recommend Ultrazone for kids 7+, unless you have a really ballsy tyke. This is definitely a family friendly place (except on Friday nights for their Friday Frenzy which is predominantly preteens and teens and is very competitive). I have played with people ages 4 – 92, so don’t feel like you are too old!
Ultrazone offers public and private games, it is great for groups, Sundays are family days, so parents play free! Plus, they generally rearrange their hours to accommodate for when kids in the area will be out of school on breaks and such. They often have good coupons in Dollars and Sense Magazine.

I went to another Ultrazone laser tag birthday party recently. Rock on!
Seriously, I have tons of fun playing this game. I learned this time that it is better to team up with at least one other person. This way you don’t get nailed too many times (one covers the front, the other covers behind) and you can protect each other when you are trying to kill bases. Don’t forget to hit them all cuz that’s how you win the most points for your team!
Onto the birthday party aspect though. IF (God forbid) I was a parent, I would totally want my kid’s birthday party to be held here. My brother and I didn’t have to do a thing. We sat there with the kids while the «Game Master» served us and the kids pizza, drinks, and cake.
All of this for only $ 240 including tip! That fed two adults and 13 kids with plenty of leftovers and 2 games of laser tag. Seriously… so worth it which is why I am upgrading to 5 STARS!
