History

Established in 2008.

THORPS was founded by owners Stephen Baraboo and Liz Glynn in the Schenk’s Corners district of the Atwood/Winnebago neighborhood on Madison’s east side. We are conceived as a community-minded modern space, specializing in haircuts and color for both men and women.

We’re inspired by the relaxed, welcoming atmosphere of traditional neighborhood barbershops and beauty parlors, so we take a simple and direct approach to our services, while keeping our customer service attentive but not over-bearing.

Our team comes from a well-rounded history and we have a variety of specialties. While each of us has a unique approach to haircutting, together we can accommodate our customers’ needs, from traditional to experimental. Our approach to hair color is to keep the options simple and straightforward, creating looks from natural to bold.

We are also focused on ethical business practices and sustainability. Visit our website for more information on our philosophy and efforts.

Liz G.

Business Owner

Liz graduated from Madison Cosmetology College in 2002 and started her career in the hair industry working in downtown Madison. In addition to doing hair behind the chair, she educated for Schwarzkopf, a german hair color company, traveling throughout the midwest teaching in salons and working at hair shows. In 2008, she opened up Thorps on the east side of Madison. Liz has worn her hair short for most of her life and specializes in short woman’s cuts. She also does a lot of coloring and highlighting in the shop. Outside of work, Liz enjoys playing basketball and volleyball, trying out new restaurants, seeing movies, attending her kids sporting events and spending time with her family. She currently lives in Cottage Grove with her partner, her two daughters and two dogs.
