At the Petinary, we offer preventative care such as dental cleaning, exams, spay/​neuter and nail trims. We also provide surgical procedures to better suit all of our clients. Additional services are available, so be sure to ask. We are happy to accommodate all of our clients’ specific needs. Dr. Kohn’s childhood love of animals led him to become a veterinarian. He received his degree from Kansas State University in 1980 and opened his practice in Madison one year later. As a solo practitioner he enjoys close relationships with his clients and their animal companions. His goal in practicing medicine is to give every client individually specialized, quality care.

Our little dog has another UTI (gets one or two a year). Petinary let us bring in a urine sample rather than heaving to take time off from work to drag her in, and charged us accordingly. And when we couldn’t make it in before they closed they left her meds and a bunch of free prescription food next door at mad catz! We’ve had nothing but great experiences at the Petinary. We’ve taken both of our dogs here for shots and infections and everything has been great. The staff is friendly, yet hey never up sell or over charge. They always do follow up calls to check on your pets. I seriously love this vet!

Just moved to Madison and live a few blocks from Petinary; so I called them first, despite some of the off the mark negative reviews. Dr Kohn is my kind of vet… Not trying to push meds or extra services/​tests that my pug didn’t need. Professional, with a nice sense of humor. If you can appreciate Willy St, and all it stands for, you’ll for sure love this quaint little place.
Karla answered the phone and was very helpful and friendly. She went above and beyond in trying to help ‘troubleshoot’ the problem my pug is having. After chatting for a bit, we both decided I should bring her in for Dr. Kohn to examine.
Talk about a warm welcome! I mentioned I have a broken foot when I spoke to Karla, and when I arrived, Dr. Kohn was there to greet me and open/​hold the door for me. He took his time to answer my questions and was so compassionate and gentle with my dog. I took home some antibiotics and was asked to call if I had any concerns and or questions.

This is the worst veterinarian in Madison. One word for this guy, «disinterested.» I have been to many vets over my 25 years here, having moved around a bit. In 2013 I tried to get a Lepto vaccination that another vet recommended, Petinary vet said he «never saw cases of this and didn’t carry it» but the other vet said she had 2 dogs die of it this year alone. What a crackpot. He also missed asthma with a cat I have, diagnosed it as «just dust» in the air. Another vet I know stated, «I don’t even know why he’s still open.» Go somewhere else where the veterinarian cares! Like: Community Critters, Sandhill, Healthy Pet, Whole Pet, Lakeveiw, Northside. This guy might be good in an emergency (?) referring to the review from 2÷23÷10, but for general caring, thorough, interested vet-​care for your beloved pets: GO. SOMEWHERE. ELSE.

We have two puppies and two cats, and Dr. Kohn, and his team have taken excellent care of them. One of my puppies is a little spunky, and what really blows my mind is how they are able handle him, and keep him calm. Do not go to the Petinary if you like saccharine personalities. Do go if you want high quality, no-​nonsense, and affordable care for your furry loved ones.

I have taken my dog to several different vets in several different states – the Petinary is THE BEST my dog has been to, hands down. I am a grad student and I always worry how much a visit will cost me. My dog needed her annual check-​up plus a couple of vaccinations and the bill was only $ 80. Best part? The vaccinations are good for three years! Dr. Kohn and his staff are amazing and they want what’s best for you and your dog. For example, I expected the doc to tell me my dog needed one of those really expensive teeth cleanings which is a conversation that happens at every other vet I’ve been to. After looking at my dog’s teeth, he said they had tartar build-​up but nothing out of the ordinary. Also, the front desk receptionist helped me figure out how to register my dog as a new resident of WI and even made an extra copy of my dog’s rabies vaccine certificate for me. This is the place to take your pet in Madison!

the hippie girl is no longer at the counter (i read a previous review stating such), but thats not a bad thing either. The doctor is old school, no non-​sense type veterinary. Gets to the point and tries to avoid dosing pets if at all possible. He’s a true pet lover and the staff genuinely cares.

I bought a new puppy last week and the first thing I did when I got home was hop on Unilocal to find a vet. Petinary was the only 5 star vet in Madison, and they are extremely deserving.
When I set the appointment for my Lucy’s first exam I was greeted by a very friendly person on the phone that was knowledgeable about every question I asked, no matter how obtuse. What really set them apart though was when we arrived for our appointment. The entire staff greeted us at the door and let us know just how much they had been looking forward to our visit.
The doc gave Lucy a thorough exam and explained everything that would happen on the follow up appointments. Prices were on par with the vet from the small town I’m originally from Which I’m sure is inexpensive for Madison. While I was paying my bill and scheduling my next appointment the doc’s assistant was keeping my pup entertained, playing with her. Friendly, knowledgeable, well priced… We’re definitely going to be back.

Excellent vet, great location on Willy Street. Bare bones facility allows for reasonable prices, great doctor and staff. I recently booked an appointment for vaccinations, got there and realized my dog didn’t need vaccination after all, no charge for wasting their time. Good people.

Dr. Mike and his staff really care about your pet. No hidden fees or exhorbitant, crazy lab tests when you don’t need them. If you want your pet to get great care from a staff that truly cares about animals, you can’t do much better. Bear in mind this is an eclectic place housed in a very old flat on Willy Street, but it’s still good.

The petinary is not exactly a modern place. The desk is always staffed by a little hippie girl, and the main vet has some odd assistants and isn’t the most smiley guy in the world. But he absolutely saved my cat’s life. He gave me great advice, trained me how to give her the rather extensive home care that she needed, rather than stay in the «hospital» for weeks, The bill, while a bit difficult to swallow, was way less than any of the other vets in town would have been, the places where they walk around in scrubs as though they are working in a hospital. When i couldn’t cough up all the dough right away, they let me spread out the payments in a way I felt comfortable with.
My cat is now happier and healthier than she has ever been in her life, and she is 17 years old now. I give full credit to the Petinary for a great diagnosis, treatment and general care.
