History

Established in 1982.

The Nau-Ti-Gal was at one time or another a stagecoach stop, speakeasy, general store, gas station, tavern and a marina complete with boat rentals, engine repair and live bait. (Oh, and no, it’s never been a strip joint!) In its most recent past, as Hanson’s Tavern, it was quite common to have your bartender tap your beer, flip your burger, then scoop up some minnows all without leaving the bar. In 1982, the von Rutenberg family purchased Hanson’s. After an extensive renovation the Nau-Ti-Gal was born. Over the years the menu, décor and outdoor amenities have evolved to give you the unique casual waterfront atmosphere that you are experiencing today.

Meet the Manager

Gayle S.

Manager

I come from range of different jobs in the service industry… Village Lanes in Monona, The Night Owl in Evansville, Spartan Bowl in McFarland and the Villa Tap here in Madison, just to name a few. My favorite was Village Lanes. Mona, showed me the ropes in the service industry.

I’ve tried a number of different things that I thought would be my career. I went to school to be an Administrative Assistant, and 10 years later, Massage Therapy. I had jobs in both fields, but was still looking for something different. My friend got me a job at the Nau-Ti-Gal as a server. I wasn’t looking to become the manager, it just kind of happened.

Working with Robert von Rutenberg was and is always fun, interesting and never boring. As the years went on he started to throw things my way and that’s how I got into management. I have been here since April 2005 and I have to say I still love going to work.
