The best meat in the Midwest. Porterhouse heaven. I get all my steaks there. Take a cooler and stock up. They have ice.

I don’t go there to buy sandwiches. Everything else I’ve ever had is superior to anything in town. I use nothing but their ground chuck for burgers, and they have a combo mix of chuck, pork, and veal that is fantastic for meat loaf and meat balls. I’ve also never had anything but polite, courteous, and friendly service. Maybe some folks just give off bad vibes.

Do NOT(!) order a sandwich, you will be treated like an alien and given an inedible and unappetizing experience. Went in today eager for sandwich. Despite having grocery supplies, they«only have hamburger rolls» and… ordering cheese seemed to be a major problem for the gal who couldn’t wait to get me out. I should have taken a pic of the sandwich. She threw it together so carelessly and slammed it on the counter, the cheese, lettuce and mustard was falling out! She could not have been more rude and being a NY’er, I know rude. I also know what a good sandwich tastes like. One(1) slice of cheese and one slice of old tomato, are you kidding me? The«bun» was tasteless and overall sandwich was terrible. In fact, I received similar attitude when I came in here last time and spent $ 120 on ribeyes($ 16/lb)! I am done with Knoche. The meat is really not that special given the high prices. And like another reviewer; where is the«local» provider? If you seek dispassionate, careless and crude customer service, this place is for you. Otherwise go to Metcalfs or somewhere with Boars Head meats. Check my other reviews — I rarely give 2 stars and rarely speak so negatively.

The next time you eat a burger in Madison that is really good, ask the waiter where they get their meat. You would be surprised how often the answer is Knoche’s. They are easily batting over 900 for me at this point Is it locally sourced? I don’t think so as most places would prominently advertise that fact, but local or no the meat is definitely a cut above something you will find in any grocery store around here which is why we don’t mind spending a few extra dollars here. If you buy the rest of your groceries here you’ll be appropriately gouged Their website lists the weekly specials

I like Knoche’s…its close to our house, convenient, and not super expensive as smaller grocery stores can be. There meat and beer selection are good and if you are missing one quick ingredient from your recipe, odds are that they’d have it… but the produce is limited. The only drawback is that their hours are on the shorter side and they’re closed Sunday so be sure to check before heading over.

A little disappointed here! I went here after all the great reviews only to find not so great or competitive prices on their meat selections at all! I wouldn’t mind paying so much if in fact the meat was«locally raised, obtained etc»…which to my surprise they clearly post a sign saying the meat is all from the«US». For a ma n pa local shop I expected most of all their goods to be local as well. I still bought some NY strips and they were really good but as they’re not actually selling anything«local» I’m going elsewhere with my support. …sorry guys!

This is a quaint butcher shop on Madison’s west side that has been there FOREVER! What does that mean? They rock! Top quality meats(many locally raised) and killer staff… this is what I imagine going into a butcher shop in the 70’s was like! They will answer any and all of your questions, give you cooking tips, and even help you pick out the best piece of meat. We recently bought a Big Green Egg smoker and they were fabulously helpful teaching us about what cuts to look for! I’ve bought full packer briskets, pork shoulders, t-bones, ribeyes, sirloins, and whole chickens from here an NEVER been disappointed! They also have a great craft beer and wine selection as well(it’s hard to find Anchor Steam out of San Fran in town… and they have it)! Love this shop… you should definitely make it a staple on your shopping list!

Great little grocery store and butcher. Great meats. Delicious potato salad. My pup loves the marrow bones we bring him from here. Since it’s a little on the pricy end(more than woodman’s or copps, less than whole foods) we tend to not do our general shopping here. Since it’s a couple blocks from home we pick things up quite frequently when we realize we need something quickly(usually while cooking dinner). Unfortunately it closes fairly early(I think 7PM) and is closed on Sundays. It tends to smell a little funny– I’m not sure if it’s the butcher shop or just odors that it has picked up from people coming in and out.

My go to place for meat.(it took me forever to find such a place in this butcher-less town). Everyone in this town think Jacobson brothers is the place to turn for their butched meat needs. I think this is mostly because ya’all think there is a correlation between the dollar amount and meat quality. Jacobson brothers did not come to the rescue when I needed a 8 pound fresh ham to brine. Knoche’s did. Knoche’s seems to carry every part of the cow and pig. Some parts are not on display in the case, and are hidden away in the basement freezer. I found this out on my most recent meat hunt — for short ribs. Ask the the cute aproned men to run down and get them. While not the cheapest priced cuts in town, they are reasonably priced and fairly high quality. Furthermore, you can feel good shopping at a locally owned joint. They also have family recipes of chili, potato salad, bratwursts, etc that I am always tempted to try.

Yay for small family grocers! While Knoche’s is too small and expensive for everyday groceries, this is where locals come time and again for good cuts of meat and various savory items for summertime grilling. Steve Knoche himself is often found helping out behind the meat counter. Don’t forget to grab a big helping of their potato salad!
