Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft

Definitely the perfect place to find nick nacks or do-​it-​yourself tools and equipment. I picked up quite a few hobby’s within the last 6 months.
Deco and mesh wreaths, knitting, jewelry repair, you name it. What I find to be most helpful is having a coupon readily available upon check out. Some items can be expensive, and almost always there is a 50% coupon on their mobile app. The best part about that is their mobile coupons and their ability to scan them straight from the app.
My only criticism revolves around my experience with the employees. In my experience, they aren’t too familiar with where specific items are kept. For instance, I was asking about a tool that would hole punch a penny for a necklace, the employee responded as if to guess and gave me quite a few places to look. I’ve had this experience on a few occasions. I figure they hire so many part-​time employees they don’t become fully aware of all the stock to be as helpful as they should be. Nonetheless, I now look on my own. No point in having someone confuse me more.

If i could give this place i ZERO I would! Joann Fabrics in general has the WORST customer service but this store by far takes the cake! I have had two awful experiences in store with «Kimberly» who works at the cut counter. I was with a group who questioned their «policy» on only being able to make 1 cut off a bolt and Kimberly completely flew off the handle and yelled, «IT’S A LIABILITY!» and would not give us any additional information to why this was not possible. So after waiting for 20 minutes to get a couple cuts off of one bolt we had to pull a number for EACH CUT we wanted off of a single bolt. If anyone has been to Joann you know the cut counter is always understaffed and you will end up waiting in line for 20+ minutes even if the store is empty. Luckily we found multiple bolts of the same fabric so our second time to the counter we just had one cut done off of each bolt. After getting our cuts, Kimberly had the audacity to gossip about my group to other employees at the cut counter WHILE WE WERE STILL AT THE CUT COUNTER! We promptly spoke to the manager about our experience and by her tone you could tell that Kimberly would not be reprimanded for her horrid behavior.
I wrote a review on my horrible experience and the automated website asked me if i would like an employee to contact me about my experience and I said yes. An employee was supposed to contact me within 3 days and it was been almost 2 months with no contact from a Joann employee.
I will never be going back to this Joann’s again so I decided I would try and buy some fabric online and that was also a DISASTER! I ordered fabric on Black Friday to get the good deals and once the order was placed I received my confirmation saying my items would be delivered in 4 – 7 business days. This was not a problem until the 7^th day when i received an email saying 3 of my 4 items were no longer available and they had been cancelled off of my order! So after waiting the allotted time to get my order in hand I will only be receiving 1 of my items LATER than the 7 days that was stated on the order confirmation.
Needless to say, I WILL NOT BE GOING TO JOANN EVER AGAIN!!! This company does not care about its customers and only has an interest in its bottom line.
If you are reading this, please google other mom and pop fabric stores in your area where you will be treated with respect and professionalism.

My friend and I went to Jo Ann’s today for some ribbon because Michaels didn’t have what we wanted. TERRIBLE mistake. I will never go to this Jo Ann’s again. We asked one of the ladies at the cutting counter if they could make us a pretty bow out of the ribbon we were purchasing. She said yes and asked if we had a number already (to wait in line for the next available person). We said we did and we waited patiently for 15 minutes until our number was called. When we got to the counter we asked the lady helping us to make us a bow. She said «we don’t do that». We stated that we already asked and the other lady said they do. She asked the lady we originally spoke with if she told us she would make a bow. That lady said that’s not what she told us and acted like we made it up. Then she rudely told us that «they don’t make stuff», and gave us a dirty look. Ummm, don’t you work at a craft store? Both of the ladies were rude and made my friend and I feel uncomfortable. They had terrible customer service. I will never go back there. I will go to Michaels from now on.

I was at this Joanne fabric yesterday, I shop here a lot and have never really given it a positive or negative thought. This time when I was at the cut counter a young guy walked up that had probably never been there before and clearly didn’t know the process of that you had to take a number (how would he?!) when he walked up to the counter, «Kimberley» one of the workers totally snapped and yelled at him to get a number, it was so inappropriate… he wasn’t trying to cheat the system or cut anyone he just didn’t know what to do. He apologized (even though it should have been the other way around) stated he didn’t realize that was the process and then asked a simple clarifying question because he still wasn’t sure where to get a number and she yelled at him again… it was unbelievable! She was so condescending and talked to him like he was the stupidest idiot on the planet when he was really just a new customer that will probably never go back; he had tears in his eyes and I would have too!!! She was probably having a bad day but there is no excuse to talk to anyone like that, ever! I woke up this morning still so irritated by this story still that I just had to share…

Renee in the framing department is the absolute best! My order got messed up and only arrived with a piece of glass — which was going to be a disaster as it was a birthday gift and I needed it two days from when it came in. She put in the order for the frame so that it will arrive on Friday and at no cost to me without me even having to ask or negotiate. Could not have been happier with the service.

NEVER, NEVER, NEVER EVER again!
First of all the place is a dump, but I can deal with that. I had coupons and was only planning to buy fleece to make a dog bed, nothing majorly extravagant. They had an okay selection, but everything was scattered and unorganized, but like I said, no big deal since I knew exactly what I needed. Now, this is where I got really turned off… the cutting counter… I waited 45 minutes and the lady behind the counter had only helped 4 people! After waiting almost and hour I asked what number she was on and she said 67. They lucky number I pulled was 78! I think smoke stated to come through my ears! That is how frustrated I was. After it had been an hour I put my fabric selections back and walked out. I truly didn’t understand why it was taking so long since the store didn’t seem busy, especially since it was a Monday afternoon! I am not one to ever complain, but I was pretty disappointed that I had spent so much of my precious time at that store and walked out empty handed. While I was on my way home I decided to call and speak with a manager and voice my frustration (something I normally would never do). I was very kind, but I felt that maybe if I said something about my experience that the manager could maybe fix things at the store, but all she said was that yea, she knew the cutters were slow and that her store was known for being slow and understaffed. She was very apologetic and nice about it. Having her tell me that just reinforced that I won’t ever be patronizing that place again. Bummer.

Awful customer service. One particular employee was especially rude. Def doing all of my shopping at Michaels.

I attempted to purchase foam padding for a headboard which they sell in 2 .5 yard rolls. I wanted to purchase the whole roll but they refused to sell it to me unless I had it physically measured.
I’m very confused as to why they forced me to measure it when I purchased it instead of selling me the entire roll like I wanted.
It took two hours to wait in line and get this thing measured out. Two. Hours.
It turned out that the foam roll was in fact 2.5 yards as previously labeled, but I got the measurement tag saying it was so that I may take it to the cashier and purchase it.
All this would be okay if the customer service wasn’t so rude and awful.
I may come back in the future to examine the place as an economic case study. I’ll title my work: «The economic anomaly: Jo-​Ann Fabrics». It’ll be all about how Jo-​Anns is inefficient, does not meet consumer demand, hostile and yet remains in business.

Today was my first visit to a Joanns Fabric store. I will never return. If I could give the place zero stars, I would.
The reviewer who said it was a «fluorescent hellhole» was absolutely correct. Dust everywhere, a filthy floor, poorly-​marked aisles, many shelves bare of merchandise, bolts of fabric lying on the floor, a ladder completely blocking an aisle (on a Saturday afternoon) with no employee in sight to move it, prices neither marked nor on shelf tags. Quilting supplies were in two separate locations in the store, far apart. No help on the floor, so I had to walk up to the front of the store to ask a cashier call for help. The person who responded to the call did not know where to find the item I was looking for, or even what it was, despite the fact that it’s a very commonly used quilting notion. She just shrugged and said, «I don’t know what that is.» When I asked her if she could ask another employee where it was located, her response was, «Well, we’re pretty busy now.»
When I finally found the fabric I wanted, I had to wait in line for 40 minutes to have it cut. Forty minutes! This was while the employees at the cutting table chatted with each other and slowly finished each customer’s cutting order. No sense of urgency to get through the line. Apparently, store management sees no need to have sufficient employees on the floor and at the cutting table on a day — Saturday — that is a peak shopping day at fabric stores.
The line at the cash registers moved a bit faster however I was dismayed to see that some registers were closed despite the fact that there were at least 25 people in line waiting to pay. When I got to the end of the line, I felt as if I was interrupting a party between the cashiers, who were calling across the store to one another about their weekend plans. All told, it took 75 minutes to buy one quilting notion and three yards of fabric. I couldn’t wait to leave the store. You couldn’t pay me to go back.

Run run away! It took 45 min to call 3 numbers only to find out that the two fabrics I had picked out were miss labeled. Instead of costing me $ 10.99 a yard they costed 44.99. The place is a dump and I left upset with nothing. I would rather drive 1 hour than to come back here

Hands down a much better bead selection (and sales) than Michaels. And the staff is very friendly had helpful.

Definitely not the nicest Jo-Ann’s ever. Heather J. hits the nail on the head when she describes this place as flourescent hellhole. I come here since it’s so close to my house, but I can pretty much count on them not having it. Their selection is pretty abysmal and there is NEVER a worker around to help you. For some reason this location is always jam packed with the weirdo-​crafter types, and the lines can be extremely long… and SLOW. It’s not a surprise when they only have 1 register open and a huge line — but don’t expect any one else to come along and help! Go to the Rochester Hills location and save yourself the headache!

I have a hard time giving a bad review because I’m obsessed with anything DIY and can always find what I need here. Not the mention there are always sales and coupons to be used. The problems are that they are seriously understaffed. There never seems to be anyone on the floor that is able to help, and then the lines for the fabric station and checkout are usually insanely long. This is obviously a busy store so I don’t understand why they can’t just hire a few more people. Its also pretty crowded here because the aisles are so narrow and if there is someone in an aisle with a cart you can forget getting by. It is very hard to get around in there.
They have some good stuff there and some decent prices so I will keep going back. I just don’t ever expect it to be a quick trip. Even if it takes you 2 minutes to find your item, you can almost guarantee that you’ll be in like for another 15 minutes waiting to check out.

I expect stores to be wheelchair accessible and clear of clutter. So it disappointed me when I told an employee someone had broken a huge Christmas bulb and there was glass everywhere could they clean it up because I needed to go down that aisle and after 15 minutes I decided to seek someone else. I asked for the manager and explained that I am on wheels and can not go over glass but I really needed something down that aisle. So the manager walks over to the aisle and with her feet push the glass out of the way and said there you go. I said as thorough as you think you are there are probably little splinters of glass that your shoe didn’t get and you should probably get a broom but I’m not telling you how to do your job. I decided to just leave because I felt that was ridiculous just when I heard a little girl start crying. Her mom was looking at the ornaments and her daughter (maybe 3 years old) picked up some shiny pieces of broken ornament off the ground. I said I just told them about this issue 20 minutes ago since my tires going flat wasn’t a big deal maybe they would be more concerned knowing your little girl cut her finger on the glass. The mom was irate to say the least but it was a little amusing listening to her go off on the manager who then told the mom well why is she picking up shiny pieces of glass? Hello… she’s 3! So to say the least they lost atleast 2 customers that day!

This isn’t a stable as far as I know, so I’m not sure why the employees all had long faces.
Stopped in on Halloween weekend during the evening to pick up a few extra supplies to complete my costume and the store was booming. I was wondering if I had time warped to Black Friday but on further inspection realized I was safe since there was still a decent selection of Halloween decorum around. Whew. You could tell a few customers were getting slightly unruly because of course they were somehow special and shouldn’t have to deal with a wait but what did not help the atmosphere was the fact that the employees (and I mean every single one I interacted with or saw interacting with another customer) seemed like they were about to take the plastic axes, swords, and other costume accessories and impale us with them. I tried to be as pleasant as possible and was able to win one of the three women over but I mean why am I doing all the work here? The other two were lost causes. I asked how they were doing, said my thank yous and goodbyes to pretty much blank stares. This increased traffic can’t be something new, most retail establishments know their patterns, so I’m just wondering why the fact that the checkout/​fabric cutting line was snaking into the abyss was making the employees mad? They have to be there anyway right?
Luckily I was able to find everything I was looking for or the equivalent of so no complaints there, though the stores setup leaves something to be desired. But after hearing the following interaction I left a bit shell shocked:
Customer– «Is this sold by the yard or do you buy the whole thing?» (Holds up ribbon)
Employee– «Read it»
Customer– «It doesn’t say» (Starts reviewing the spool again)
Employee– (Staring) «Yes it does» (Turns around)
Ahhhh! Is that a plastic grenade coming?! Never again. Jo-​ann locations require good customer service because they are one in a a million (or approx 750 if you want to get specific) I’m going to be smarter and get my craft on long before these holiday war zones.

I suppose I’m partial to the Novi location given that it has not the single floor but two floors of merch, a friendlier staff and is easier to navigate with wider aisles. On my mom’s recommendation of choice purveyors I went looking for a quality iron for pressing shirts and slacks. The Madison Heights location is closest to my house so I started there. I found a small selection of Rowenta products but their prices were a little high after comparing them to Target and Bed Bath and Beyond. I’m just not really a fan of this location. The plaza it sits in is rundown and it’s usually a mad house with rude people milling about but it will work in a pinch depending on what you’re looking for.

Joann’s comes in three flavours: 1] megastore overflowing with options; 2] fluorescent hellhole; 3] niche shop catering to scrapbooking, quilting, or some other single craft occupation.
John R. fits squarely inside option two. Entering here is taking a wormhole to a K-​mart circa 1984, staffed by ladies more interested in chopping fabric squares and complaining about parking at Jazzercise than working. The typical clientele must be pushing 90, fascinated by patterned pigs, avid cruise ship attendees, and prone to giving the grandkids awkward presents they are forced to display on their shelves. No where else have I seen a rooster-​patterned stuffed pig wearing sunglasses and a hat but here. I just don’t understand.
At least these oddities would be eccentric or charming if the store at least stocked the basics needed by almost every crafter. Glue, notions that matched their bizarre quilting cotton, simple round buttons or batting. Good luck finding them on shelves cluttered with one-​offs I have no use for, as there isn’t even a gap for plain white cotton stuffing or a zipper which isn’t covered in flowers, kittens, polka dots or screaming orange. A more cohesive plan for stocking the essentials would help instead of being forced to resort to Michael’s or the Joann’s website.
I avoid the fabric section at all costs, even during a megasale. Too many purchases have unspooled or unraveled on me, the patterns and colours are garish, and don’t match anything else. Upholstery is slightly better and equally insane during their 40% off everything days as every woman and not a few men descend to buy their pillow covers. Thanks a lot, HDTV.
Joann’s sales are sometimes things of legend and generate huge lines, headaches, and shortages. I’ve been swept up buying ten patterns for $ 10, skeins of yarn or scrapbooking materials. The disorganization on a normal day increases by a magnitude, and good luck finding anything you were after. Seasonal clean outs after holidays generate big savings but big headaches if you want something in particular. At the best of times, cashiers are woefully slow and the line moves at the speed of an Antarctic glacier. I gave up on the first (and last) super sale I tried here.
Staff are invisible much of the time, particularly when you need them. I’m forever out of luck at the pokey fabric cutting station because someone has to stop and chat with the ladies. I’ve never tried taking classes because the thought of spending more than 30 minutes here induces vague feelings of despair and rage.
Parking is best if you go farther out into the lot.

Oh boy… for some reason I feel bad giving this place a meh-review…probably because it is my local/​go-​to Jo-​Ann. I’m here at least twice a week since it’s cheaper for me to use their 40%-off coupons than to pay for the materials I need wholesale+freight.
The good: I can honestly say I’ve never had a bad experience with the people working here. A few apathetic or lackluster experiences, sure. But never bad. This location more than any other is friendly enough to inquire about what I’m making, etc.
Parking: Do yourself a favor if you’re here anytime other than early on a weekday morning, and park just south of the Dunham’s. It’ll spare you a lot of stress and fighting with the Target shoppers for a spot.
The bad: This isn’t exclusive to THIS Jo-​Ann (and I’ve been to a LOT), but if you’re brave/​foolhardy enough to shop for fabric during one of their BIG fabric sales, bring along your patience, fortitude, and probably a Kindle e-​book for after you snatch your next-​in-​line ticket. You’d think management would have every single station staffed… but no. I can’t complain about the employees at all, except to say this… when I visit Guildcrafters in Berkley, they automatically pile up four bolts and cut them together (with an inch leeway!) if I’m ordering the same amount, as opposed to cutting each bolt one-​by-​one (of the same brand! just different colors!). If this is a corporate thing, please feel free to tell me so, because it’s maddening!
I do really miss the Jo-​Ann superstore on Telegraph from when I worked Downriver… but this one will do for my basic needs. I just wish they’d open up one here!!!

I will stick with the Joann’s in Novi! This one is so limited in what it offers. Many of the fabrics, yarns… seemed out dated. It wasn’t very clean and the staff not as friendly or helpful as the staff in Novi.

Wooof.
This place is great if you are a midwestern 80 year old woman with a house full of crafty cow ornaments, who loves to crochet sweaters for your smelly dachshund, and makes camouflage quilts for your son, the hunter.
For everyone else, you gotta search those aisles high and low for useful fabric and materials. The fabric selection is great if you are looking for 4 kinds of camouflage, or kooky krazy prints.
That said, the coupons are convenient and the fabric is reasonably priced.
