So, long story short — we went to Luray Caverns(ha, it sucks when I don’t do my long meandering stories about hijinks with my family, doesn’t it?) and not quite ready to go home, we decided to visit«historic Luray». OK. So, when I hear the word«historic», I’m expecting lots of parks, and old buildings, and lots of things to see and do. Yeeeeah…“historic Luray” was about ½ block long. And the highlight of this block, was Smeltzer’s Auction & Realty. I know it doesn’t sound exciting, but this building had several things going for it: 1) it was one of the only 3 stores that had honest to god air conditioning on a 90 degree day. 2) there was a *plethora* of vintage goods — in awesome condition. And the best part… many of these things were *dirt* cheap! I got a vintage 50’s cake carrier… for $ 9. Yes, that’s right! I found practically the exact same cake carrier at a store across the street for $ 35! Even on eBay you can’t get it less then $ 25(after shipping). So *MEGA* score! 3) the ladies that run this place is hilarious. Not intentionally so — they were very earnest and serious… but they were hilarious none the less. So yes, «historic Luray» sucks tragically… however Smeltzer’s Auction was FANTASTIC. Final note — to anyone that lives in Luray… get out. Get out now. Seriously, the caverns were cool, and your town is cute… but dear god how to you keep from falling into a coma out of BOREDOM!!!
