Took an impromptu trip from DC out to Shenandoah National Park to try and grab one a walk-​up tent site. My wife was out of town for the weekend, so it was just me and my dog. Picked an understandably busy weekend, and by the time I got there, all the campsites in the national park were completely booked.
Did a quick Unilocal search and found this place, and it was everything I could have hoped for for my spur of the moment one night camping trip. It’s 20 bucks per person per night, which seems to be about the norm for river camping in the area. But for two people, it’s about the same if you plan on spending a night in the National Park in a packed campground with tents all around you (admission to the Nat’l park is 20 bucks and a site is at least 15).
Didn’t use the bathhouse or kitchen facilities, so I can’t rate those. I had enough water to drink and brush my teeth, and there are clean porta-​potties there for river front camping.
After setting up the tent I took a quick dip in the river to cool off and enjoy the evening unwinding after a busy week.
Their policy states that they only allow group camping, as does the sign when you drive up to the camp. But they were kind enough to make an exception for me as they had open sites and it was the middle of the weekend (not a lot of people checking in on Saturday evening), and I had driven all the way out from DC and struck out at the National Park. So major kudos to them for being so flexible and understanding. If you’re planning on camping solo, just to get away for a night, just give them a call that day to get a sense of what the situation is. It worked out great for me, but I know that they technically don’t allow it.
All in all, I can’t recommend this place enough. The next chance my wife and I have to get away for a quick night camping, I’ll probably bring her back here. It’s also great that you can go tubing at Shenandoah Outfitters which is next door. Probably would have taken advantage of this if I had gotten in sooner.

I was really happy to find this place as a departure from the usual tent-​based camping trip. We booked the treehouse for the last weekend of October, so they kept the site open a little late for us. While it was very cold, they provided us with extra blankets and ample amounts of firewood (for only $ 20 extra, and we got a lot). The treehouse itself was incredibly fun – it’s a little loft in a tree with a full bed, a small table, a cast iron stove, and little homey touches like books, a mirror in the closet, and a cutting board for food preparation. While the cast iron stove posed something of a challenge to us city slickers, we cooked a few meals on it and it (almost) kept us warm at night.
The canoe came with the rental, and while it was a little too chilly for a long excursion, the river was right there, so we paddled around for a bit. The scenery is unbeatable, and because of the season, we had the place pretty much to ourselves (aside from Halloween revelers across the way). The campground has a bunch of individual campsites and some cabins, so I’m guessing it gets a little noisier with the warm weather. It’s very close to Skyline Drive, dozens of hiking trails, and Luray Caverns.
My favorite part was probably the horses – they were very friendly! There’s also a field of cows nearby, and the mooing woke us up from time to time, but I’m not complaining. It was all very charming.
Gail and Ben were very responsive, very accommodating, and we even got a free bottle of sparkling apple cider upon arrival. All in all, a great weekend, and I would love to go again! This place was perfect for a little getaway, but it would also be fun with a bigger group or a family.

You actually feel isolated in the woods and right on the Shenandoah. Other places have all of the campers right on top of each other, where here, you have so much space that you hardly know other campers are around you.
We had a group of 8 and booked 3 campsites right next to each other for 2 nights right on the river. It was a wonderful set up. This site is probably the most conveniently located one if you are tubing/​kayaking/​canoeing with River Outfitters. We easily walked to RO from our site for a day of tubing.
The shower facilities are nothing fancy, but practical & gets the job done. We didn’t use the kitchen facilities since we grilled our meals, but it looked like a great kitchen to use, especially if you have a larger group. These were located at «Basecamp» which was just up the hill from our actual site. They also had working bathrooms there too. They provided two port-​o-​pots closer to the sites by the river, which was very convenient, especially at night.
Needless to say, my group has already decided to start doing our annual camping trip here every year instead of continuing to «venue shop» for other locations. This place was ideal in every way for camping.
Lastly, the owners were extremely helpful and nice. There was a chance of rain on Saturday night, and the owners strung up a large tarp for some shelter, if needed. Fortunately, the rain stayed away & the weather was gorgeous, but it just shows how caring the owners are of their campers. We HIGHLY recommend this place for your next Shenandoah camping trip!!!

Absolutely beautiful. If you want to feel like you are in a third world country, yet with running water, communal cooking areas, and great access to the Shenandoah River, this is it. We just happened to find these campgrounds during Labor Day weekend, and were taken back by what a gem this place was! The hosts were very accommodating, and provided free firework (that they chopped all day long). We’re coming back here for sure!
