Margaret’s Consignment & Collectibles is an upscale consignment store with over 5,000 square feet of sales floor located at 2700 Frankfort Avenue in the historic Crescent Hill neighborhood. With a commitment to only accepting the highest quality new and gently used items, Margaret’s carries an excellent selection of men’s, women’s, and children’s clothing, as well as jewelry, accessories, and household collectibles.

History

Established in 1991.

Margaret Browning opened her store in 1991 and expanded to include a home store in 1999. The store has received many awards and recognitions over the years, including: being a 2010 CVB «Rose Award» Nominee; being a Business First «Business of the Year» nominee; receiving the «Best of Louisville» award; being recognized as the «Best Consignment Store» by readers of Louisville Eccentric Observer in 2000, 2003, 2010 and 2011; receiving the «Her Award» from Today’s Woman in 2002; receiving Congressional recognition in 1998; being nominated for the National Association of Women Business Owners’ in 1998 and 2002; being named the Frankfort Avenue Business Association’s «Business of the Year» in 2008, among many others.

Margaret Browning opened her store in 1991 and it has become an icon in the Crescent Hill neighborhood. She is very involved in the community, and supports various charities such as Hosparus, St. Joseph’s Children’s Home, and the Prom Project. She is also the chairperson of the Olde Tyme Christmas Celebration on Frankfort Avenue.

Rude bitter old ladies. I parked my car in their parking lot. Was planning on shopping there after I got my hair cut because they are all in the same shopping block. I get back to my car and they scotch taped their business card on my drivers side window. I didn’t know why so I called later and asked. The old woman said that it was their parking lot and I could only park there if I was shopping there. I said I was going to but not now! She said I would have to talk to the owner because she didn’t do it. I said it didn’t matter. No one should be doing it! It leaves sticky film on my window and I didn’t do anything wrong! I’ve been in there a few times before and they are not friendly at all anyway.

This consignment ship may be overly priced but they have some good quality cloths. I’ve been here many times and had a good time talking with the older ladies.

Where else can you go shopping and get serenaded at the front entrance by a beautiful man dressed in drag? That is one of the things that makes Margaret’s unique and fun.
I usually stop by once a month during the F.A.T. trolley hop. They have a wide selection of women’s clothing, shoes, hats, jewelry and handbags as well as men’s clothing. The entire store is color coordinated so if you are looking for that perfect little red dress, it is easier to find. Most of it is gently used and reasonably priced. The jewelry is new and bold! I can’t resist grabbing a new pair of earrings or a statement necklace.
During the Trolley Hop the last Friday of every month, they have live entertainment, refreshments and specials. Go check it out!

RUDE, RUDE, RUDE! When I entered the store there was an employee close by… no hello. No welcome, no can I help you, no kiss my ass! Nothing! A did find quite a few pieces that I wanted to try on. I asked the rude employee if I could put my selections in a fitting room while I continued to look around. She said no! And all four of the tiny fitting rooms were unoccupied. So I continue to shop with my arms full. At this point I’m really annoyed because I want to leave as I feel very unwelcome but I am finding some great pieces to try on!
Upon entering the fitting room, I read a sign saying limit of four items and when done, return items to the proper rack! ARE YOU KIDDING ME! What the heck are the employees for?! It sure isn’t for meeting and greeting or customer service.
Bottom line… some really rude employees but some great clothes.
I almost forgot, the owner herself came in the front door as I was looking thru a rack by the door. She also said absolutely nothing to me. I just think that small businesses should be friendlier than the big box stores.

Last year, at the suggestion of a friend, I packed up a large selection of clothing I no longer wanted and took it to Margaret’s to sell. It was an awful experience. Everyone I spoke to was rude. I had to wait forever. They were slow and couldn’t care less how long they kept me standing there. Although I brought beautiful designer clothing, some of it with the tags still on, the scrutinized everything with a scowl and a «not sure if this is good enough for us» attitude. I thought well maybe a bad day, so I left my stuff and hoped for a better experience next time. I have been there two more times, the last time being today. I will never go there. Its just a bunch of nasty women all standing around doing nothing, though too busy to help you. No place is worth their awful attitudes and horrible treatment. Go elsewhere. Too many other options.

I have been in this store 4 times, each time I have been, no one speaks or greets me as a customer. The last time I was in, I took my nephew to the mens section and there was a lady there moving jeans, she never stopped, looked up or said one word to us. He had picked out 4 pairs of shorts, 5 shirts. Since we did not seem welcome, perhaps because we were Black we put the items back. I have a problem spending my money where it sems not to be wanted.

I loved this place from the moment I walked in. But once I realized how sour the attitudes of the employees are, I left. Just walked right out the door. This place may be very high end for a consignment store but the staff is nothing except for trash. I recommend you try somewhere else for a good deal on clothing.

I will start out by saying that I find Margaret’s a little pretentious. Considering it’s a consignment store, I shouldn’t feel like I am too poor to shop there, but I usually do. That’s the main reason why I didn’t award it five stars.
However, if you can overlook the pretentious vibe of the place, I think you’ll find that Margaret’s is a really great place to find nice barely– to never-​worn clothes for really cheap. My favorite place to shop is the hidden sales room in the very back of the first floor. This is where clothing goes before it is given back to the seller as unsold, and I have found some really great additions to my wardrobe there for less than $ 5 each. If I lived closer to the store, I would go there every week just to check out the sale room.
I have never sold to Margaret’s – I tend to wear my clothes until they fall apart – but if you’re the type of person with a bunch of barely worn name-​brand clothes hanging in your closet that you would like to get rid of, I have a feeling you’ll have some success selling there.

Staff is THE WORST! I arrived in Louisville from out of town and hit the consignment stores looking for fabulous finds to wear to the Derby. I started my search at Margaret’s consignment store. BIG MISTAKE! A matronly woman was nasty to me. I had selected several dresses to try on — left my selection in the dressing room to go find a few more choices. This sales lady proceeded to track me down and told me «this is no mall store» in no uncertain terms she told me put my dresses back on the racks now. I had not even made my final choices! My next mistake was asking a passing employee if there was a restroom and got a very curt NO. Needless to say, I left never to return which is too bad because the clothing was nice but the «customer service» was outrageous!

I’ve only bought clothing at Margaret’s, so if you need info on selling, keep on scrolling! (At least until I earn enough to be cleaning things out of my closet that Margaret’s would take).
Margaret’s is a beautifully-​merchandised treasure trove of barely-​worn designer duds. Situated on one of my favorites streets in town, Margaret’s is located on a picturesque corner with a large old Victorian building that just begs to be explored.
Most of my experience at Margaret’s has been in the women’s clothing; the best labels are in the room to the left of the entrance, and the best deals are upstairs. I’ve been thrilled to get Talbot’s shoes, Cache cocktail dresses, and Cole Haans that make my friends green with envy — all for a fraction of the price I would pay while on a retail sale or at Zappo’s outlet.
Best of all, Margaret’s marks down frequently, and the labels always say when the next low price will be. Exercise patience with caution if something really catches your eye, as I’ve tried to wait out for a lower price and then been disappointed that someone else did the same and has beaten me to the good deal.
For special events, upscale clothing, or just for a fun new accessory to add to your wardrobe, I’d recommend swinging by Margaret’s for a quirky and fun addition to your wardrobe :)

I can’t wait to go back here when I have more time to browse! They have a great selection of clothing, and the prices drop the longer the item remains in stock (check out the sale room for the best deals). My husband was excited to find a very nice selection of business-​appropriate clothing for men. If you visit on certain days, they offer an additional 10% discount on everything when you pay with cash.

I was impressed with the huge selection of merchandise available at Margaret’s. The clothes are organized wonderfully, and it’s easy to find what you are looking for. But the customer service at this consignment shop is bad enough to make me want to visit other stores before making another trip to Margaret’s.
The staff members always seem bothered when you ask for help, and there is even a note of disdain when they respond. It’s best to venture on your own if you don’t want to encounter a sour attitude.
I wish the employees were more pleasant, for I would shop at this high-​end consignment store more often. The clothes are great, but the service leaves something to be desired.

Margaret’s is a fairly nice consignment shop, they have a HUGE selection of items (and a very nice Men’s section) however I find the layout and arrangement of clothing makes it hard to find things. I know that different rooms have different colors of clothing but this makes it hard to find things in your size.
The prices are a little steep for consignment but if an item doesn’t sell within a month the price decreases, so you can find great deals once in awhile.
The staff mean business, making them not the most friendly or helpful of people. But I have never not been greeted when walking in the store.
I will be back but not as often as other consignment shops in Louisville.

REALLY nice items, and the stuff that’s been sitting around a while can be bought at ridiculous prices.
The staff isn’t so much gracious as they mean business. So if you are going to sell your items to them be sure to have all clothing on hangers and GO AROUND TO THE BACK! There’s a window for receiving, meekly approach and say «This is my first time, please tell me what to do». Because if you try to pile a bunch of junk on the counter inside you are going to feel like you just pissed off your grandma’s bridge club.

No idea why none of the Clifton/​Crescent Hill residents have reviewed this but this is a great place for a man to build an affordable wardrobe – the consignments are clean and classy – many a find here for sports coats and accessories that might otherwise cost me a lot of money. I know that several of my friends and family also swear by Margaret’s. Check it out the next time you do the Trolley night.
