This is one of my 2 favorite HB locations. It’s next to the bookshop and I love to sit with my friend, drink coffee, and discuss book club shenanigans. The staff are helpful when I can’t decide. They at least appear not to be annoyed which is gracious of them and for that I am grateful. I am alway happy with the recommendations no matter who provides it. This leaves me with the impression that HB puts a strong emphasis on customer service. As it is consistently the case no matter the location.

Love visiting Heine Bros.(all locations) whenever I’m in Louisville. The only thing I ever order is iced coffee, and theirs is delicious. The staff that I’ve encountered have always been friendly and I love love love that each location is totally unique, but all still maintain a chill, eclectic vibe. Definitely recommend !

some of my favorite coffee. i usually go with an espresso. iced green jasmine tea with honey is super refreshing in the summer. i adore this location with the wooden floors, plant life abundant and collages and art adorning the walls. it’s a bit small and during certain times can get too busy for me but the patio outside is much larger so that’s where i usually end up. this location is particularly great because it’s in the center of the highlands, so you can park(usually pnc or on the street next to) and walk around all day exploring neat shops, getting some food, or just enjoying the scenery. i’ve done that before, and then stopped by HB for a refill before finishing up the day.

This is a genius location: they are connected at the hip to our local, independent bookstore. This isn’t my mothership Heine Bros. but it is the original one and offers the same great selection. I will say this: it can get loud in this coffee shop. This isn’t my mothership so it isn’t where I come to work and I tried to get some work done there. That’s more my fault, it wasn’t the time or place to work. I just mention that as a caution that other Heine Bros would be better choices for that, this one is perfect for socializing with friends after a nice dinner or brunch on Bardstown or leaving money in the bookstore.

Great place to pop into for a scone – savory or sweet, and a cup of tea, or any number of fun desserts. Bus your own tables – there are only a few – but most love that I can quickly pop into the bookstore next door. Newspapers were available in the morning and love the cozy feel of the joint.

I spent over three years frequenting this location until a staff member called the police and had three patrons removed without reason. I’ve never been in a coffee shop in which a staff member feels the need to scream at patrons to be quiet, as well. I will not return to this business or any affiliated locations.

Heine Brothers coffee is a staple in Louisville, and I believe this location was their first. It is connected to a locally owned book store, and has a good amount of outdoor seating. Typical Highlands crowd, good coffee, sandwiches, that sort of stuff. They source their own coffee, and it is normally pretty good. They have really expanded over the years, and they now have locations all over Louisville, KY.

I love this place! I can walk to here while living in highlands. My favorite drink is the iced beekeeper with whipped cream. The chaiberg is amazing too

Cool little coffee place inside a bookstore. Not so great vanilla latte. The iced salted turtle was great though!

The person who took are order was very pleasant, however our cappuccinos were just awful and we are generally very forgiving. Don’t quite understand why it was so mediocre but given the neighborhood I’m sure you could you can find better alternatives.

I like this place. I live in Orlando. This is my hometown. Always try to stop here cause it’s such a great atmosphere. Coffee is good. Hallway to a bookstore. I feel like I’m in San Francisco. I would recommend this to anybody

Fair trade Peruvian coffee hit the spot as did my friends ice coffee. Place is spacious with an outside patio. Great place to relax, stop for a quick bite and sip, or power up and accomplish some much needed work.

First time customer at Heine Bros. Decent coffee but that’s about all. My cup still had coffee grounds in it which is a big pet peeve of mine. The«barista» was surprisingly rude as I asked for a regular coffee and she proceeded to ridicule me about how she didn’t know what regular was but they had small, medium, or large. It would’ve been nice to see a smile on her face instead of a disgraced demeanor because I didn’t know what they called their cup sizes. If she only knew that being polite with a smile goes a long way. Folger’s will be just fine from now on, as I won’t be going back.

Truly a fan of this place. This place, and specifically this location, turned me on to «local coffee.» So it will always hold a special place for me. A great selection of beverages. It’s connected to Carmichael’s Bookstore. In the summer, it’s a nice seating area outside, right on Bardstown Road. Ramsi’s is right next door. Baxter Avenue Theatre is just across the street. It really is a fantastic location. I’ve since moved on to, what I feel is, better coffee(Quill’s, Sunergos, etc.), but I’ll always love Heine Bros. Hard to go wrong here.

I come here mostly every Wednesday and meet friends for coffee. This is a really nice place, and when I actually get coffee it is very tasty. I am always there until atleast several hours after they close just hanging out and people watching. The location and area are great.

Derby City Joe Review #13 What makes this Coffee Shop Sing? The original Henie Brothers’ location is a reliable, longstanding neighborhood favorite, but recent renovations have traded in some of its unique personality for a more generic, branded experience. I’m a bit boring. I fully admit it. At least as far as coffee goes. A basic cup of Joe is all that I usually crave. I’m a simple man who nods obediently like a broken bobblehead when a discussion on the finer points of coffee shifts into high gear. Most days, I just want my hot coffee. But I want it to be high quality, locally roasted, freshly ground and in a nice mug. Hey, it may only be about two bucks, but it’s my two bucks. And that is possibly Heine Brothers’ best feature. While there tends to be differing opinions on Louisville’s largest local coffee chain, one thing is undeniable: they reliably serve a consistent cup of coffee. There is an ever changing daily grind that offers many different tastes with ranging success, but the quality is always good. The store on Longest Avenue in the heart of the Highlands can lay claim to being the very first Heine Brothers’ store. The shop has been in continual operation since 1994 and has managed to retain that intimate, sometimes elusive, local coffee shop vibe over the years. Just as reliable as the coffee is the steady stream of customers who flow in and out each morning. Due to the central location and longevity of the joint, this Heine Brothers’ has customers who meet the dictionary definition of coffee shop regulars. A surprisingly large number of customers appear at least somewhat familiar withas one another. It’s worth discussing the renovation that was recently completed. After 20 years in business, a face lift was overdue. But along with fresh paint, updated signage and new chairs, I feel like they also stripped the store of a good chunk of its charm and personality. This location is quickly starting to look nearly identical to all of the other Heine Brothers’ stores scattered across the city. Gone are the hand-drawn chalkboards highlighting daily drinks and the giant red shelving unit behind the counter. Instead, you’ll now find large, easy to read menus that lack any distinction. Formerly, there were great seats at a bar by the window and photos scattered around the store of people with their Heine Brothers’ gear in locales across the world. The photos are now isolated to one space on the wall and the bar area has been replaced with utilitarian high tables. To be fair, it does now have a cleaner and more open look, but it also feels considerably more generic. Along with the regular array of mochas, espresso and more, the coffee of the day rotates through a nice variety of blends that include Sumatra, French Roast, Mary Chaterine, Good Morning and beyond. Coffee Of The Day — The Bolivian Blend. A solid mug with a bit of peaty aftertaste. Strong, earthy and sweet. Roasted but not burnt with a clean finish. The type of coffee you can grab and go with confidence to start your day. Cost of a small mug of Joe — $ 2.00 Cost of a Refill — 83 cents Décor– Excellent outdoor seating compliments a garden variety of tables and somewhat bare walls. Crowd– A diverse crowds delivers a little bit of everything including people who often seem to be in quite the hurry. Staff — This Heine Brothers has some of my favorite baristas in the city. They are engaging, affable, funny and devoted to the regulars. Comfort Level — Comfortable enough, I suppose. It used to be a bit more cozy. Wi-Fi — Free(after agreeing to a lengthy user agreement) Bonus: This Heine Brothers’ connects inside directly to Carmichael’s, one of the best bookstores in Louisville!

My group of friends frequented the other Heine on Bardstown Rd and since they closed we started coming to this location. They have been very accomodating and although the interior is much smaller, the weather has been cooperative allowing us to use the outdoor tables. We always meet after 6 so there is ample parking at PNC across the way or on the streets. The coffees of the day have all been tasty and I love the frozen cappuccino.

There was always something charming about the original Heine Brothers, but then again, it was old. I very much like the space now that it has been renovated. And most of my favorite things about this spot are still intact, but now there seems to be more room to relax and sip some coffee. The new HB is brighter and more open. The counter area is smaller, but there seems to be more seating. And several pieces of art adorn the large wall showing Louisville and HB’s coffee. The coffee is still great. I especially like their iced coffee — simple perhaps but nonetheless refreshing. They also have some sandwich and other snack options. The candies nuts are my fave! And besides the renovation, this HB stands out in the variety of people who take the time to stop at this tiny space. During my most recent visit, the clientele included some college students, an older woman, a doctor with stethoscope and a homeless person. If you’re in the mood for some great conversations with strangers come here. One compliant, though, is a definite lack of outlets.(I hope this gets factored into the renovation.) But the outdoor seating and the fact it’s connected to Carmichael’s Bookstore help balance this out.

Love this place. They take too much of my money. I can guarantee every time I order a drink it will be made with perfection.

coffee spots rarely impress me. decaf coffee even more so. Heine Brothers has organic coffee and bananas. I had a banana there that was the best banana I have ever had in my life, not kidding. great vibe and well executed coffee shop. I wish we had these in Denver.

It turns out there are 2 Heine Brothers Coffee locations on Bardstown Road because I first made myself comfortable for a day of meetings at one a few miles away. Thank goodness I «checked-in» on Unilocal and Alex L, of Unilocal Cincy fame, came to my rescue. And there are many more Heine Brothers locations throughout Louisville. I think this may just be the Starbucks of Louisville and oh so much cooler and even tastier than our corporate friends. I write this as a sip my skinny vanilla iced latte and wish I had a Heines Brother frozen cappachino in my hands instead. Besides the delish frozen cappachinos I really love the vibe of this tiny coffeeshop. It’s connected to a bookstore, which I hope is doing better than most the bookstores in the country. There are plenty of outlets, the staff is friendly and it turned out to be the perfect office for my day in Louisville.

Wow, there’s some real hate for this place going on here. I wasn’t blown away, but it wasn’t anything terrible either. I was in Louisville for the day and spent a long time here working. It was my first Heine Brothers experience, so I can’t compare it to much else other than other coffee shops, and on that level it was fine. The coffee shop is very small — one counter and about four small tables in the back of the room. We were actually lucky that we got a seat at all. There are also tables outside, but it was way too hot to rock one of those. A-OK seems to sum-up this coffee shop pretty well, since it had everything a coffee shop should, but in ways that almost didn’t work. There was first Internet here, but it was so slow and terrible, I had to connect with my Verizon card instead. There was a power strip to plug into, but it was near the coffee bar, so I actually had to wrap a wire behind a stranger to plug into my dying computer. Luckily he was OK with it, but still, bad placement. I did enjoy the coffee though, which I thought was really well made. And I didn’t get any attitude from the baristas like others have pointed out. They seemed very professional to me. The neatest part of this shop seems to be that it’s connected to a bookstore … but I think I’d rather just have a great coffee shop instead.

Somehow both the coffee and the employees were bitter and unpleasant. And when I say the coffee was bitter, it was worse than Starbucks. I’ve had cough medicine that was less bitter than this coffee. I had the mocha, and I initially though that it was bitter and under-flavored, but then I tried my wife’s brewed coffee, and I could not take another sip. Then my mocha tasted sweet and rich by comparison. The place was a total downer, too. I don’t think the employees even know how to smile, and the quote written on the chalkboard was«It’s called the American dream because you have to be asleep to believe it.» This is spite of the fact that this is a successful locally owned coffee shops. The owner of the shops, literally living the American dream as a small businessman, was allowing other to teach that it’s impossible. This is the only coffee shop I’ve been to in Louisville, but it’s definitely the worst I’ve been to in my life. There’s not enough seating, the people are miserable, the coffee is terrible. There’s literally no reason to come here.
