Very fresh meat, I think on Friday only, not sure — side of lamb and veal pulled out and then cut to order in front of you! This will make it hard to buy meat from Kroger going forward. This place is very authentic, and next door they have a small eatery. The Baklava is very delicious, they have regular and also pistachio. I do notice that this place is old school, many middle eastern items, relics, religious symbols. As an American, you do not blend in well as many shoppers are international here. Worth the trip for the fresh meat on Fridays.

Best fresh pita bread I’ve had. Good baklava too. I also enjoy the za’atar bread as well. I actually crave it. I’m going to try the restaurant next door sometime soon. I think you’ll find it an interesting place to explore.

I like Alwatan a lot. They carry the essentials of Middle Eastern cooking, including some unusual items. Prices are fair, and the service is friendly. The store is small, but always clean and well-organized. I am partial to the fresh-baked pita at Alwatan. I also like their variety of fresh baked Arabic cookies. Alwatan carries fresh Halal meats. In Arabic, Alwatan means homeland, and this place feels homy.

Here is why I am a fan: I’m Lebanese and I go into the grocery to grab essentials for my home cookin’! I love that they have about 5 or 6 different kinds of grape leaves. My family LOVES stuffed grape leaves. Some of them are holey(holes in the leaves) brands that are a pain but you can make«messy mishi» which is cut up grape leaves with the stuffing(meat, rice, spices) all mixed up together(i.e. Not in rolls). Other brands are great and consistent. Which would be great if they were always in stock.

I am always excited to visit a different ethnic store. The Alwatan Bakery is next door to the Alwatan restaurant. The store is well organized and larger than it seems from the outside. There are countless rows of canned goods, biscuits, sauces, spices, etc. They also have a freezer section full of pre-made kibbehs, falafels and other breads. They also offer some fresh halal meats. And then there are the baklavas and other sweets. My experience here today is 3 stars instead of 4 stars because I’m just not sure whether the owner cared about my presence in the store.

Sweets! Sweets! Sweets! Best baklava and pistachio desserts. Flaky, yummy and sweet! They also make fresh breads. Pita breads are soft and cheap. It’s a steal. I’d pay more actually ~ it’s that good. Get the desserts variety tray. Perfect for gift giving, party and own pleasure.
