Yeah… I’d tap dat(tree). Every March marks Maple Season in New Hampshire. As a child I participated in gathering the sap, bringing it to a boil, and bottling it up. My most favorite sugar house to visit for the sweet stuff? — Sunnyside Maples. Owned by the Moore family, Sunnyside Maples sits conveniently off of Rt 106 — straight across from the race track [(zoom)]. In the early-spring months of my youth, this sugar house was open for breakfast! The boilers could be viewed from the small dining area, and the warm smell of copper vats brewing up syrup permeated the barn board walls. Saturday mornings, the family would load up the car and head out to the sugar house for a pancake breakfast(of course, cider donuts and hot cocoa were to be had as well). To this day, I am extrordinarlity judgemental when it comes to blueberry pancakes. Sunnyside Maples… you have ruined me(I don’t even order blueberry pancakes out of my fear of a terrible product). Honestly, some of the best memories from my childhood. Unfortunately, Sunnyside no longer serves up a New Hampshire sugar house breakfast. However(MOST fortunately) the sugar house is still brewing up that exquisite amber elixir! For sale, a variety of maple products: maple candy, syrup, maple mustard and seasonings. My favorite item: Maple CREAM! Spreadable sugar — best on warm toast(or cider donuts) and lasts a pretty long time in your fridge. Also for sale(thank my lucky stars): their personal blend of pancake mix(YES! — sure I can’t make the cakes without setting off the smoke detector… but that’s another story for another time). The sugar house gift shop is open some odd hours for sure(8am-4pm: maybe not«odd»…but inconvenient for a now full-time MA resident: yes). NOTE to full-time MA residents: phone order year-round 603−267−8217 or 603−783−0321. FACT: sugar shack closes mid-April — — - may want to call before popping in! 603−783−996. A-yuh, Maple season’s in full-brew in the month of March… but be patient, my sap-seeking friends… the syrup at the end of the season might take longer to drain from the tap, but it’s the sweetest syrup(IMO) and well worth the wait. Set your sights North, buy the large jug… thank me later.
