Business Owner

Prior to starting the Westchester Wado-Ryu Karate-Do Academy at the Westchester Recreation Center, I taught karate for five years at the Torrance-South Bay YMCA. I have also taught karate for the Westside YMCA’s after-school programs at Bel-Air Elementary and Edison Middle schools. I began studying karate in 1990 when I was a student at the University of East Anglia in Norwich, England. I founded and helped teach the University of Rochester Wado-Ryu karate club. In 1999, after nine years of hard training, I passed my test for 1st Dan (1st-degree black belt) with Sensei Masafumi Shiomitsu (9th Dan). I finished my Ph.D. in English that same year and then moved to Los Angeles to teach writing as a lecturer at UCLA in the Writing Programs department. I passed my 2nd Dan (2nd-degree black belt) test in December 2005.
