Specialties

Most of the Urth Yoga teachers have completed Anusara Yoga teacher trainings or similar alignment-​based hatha yoga trainings and are dedicated to this path. Some of teachers are influenced by other styles and incorporate this into their classes. Irrespective of our teacher backgrounds and influences, we all share the same goal; to help every student gain a deeper relationship between body, mind and heart, to overcome physical and mental limitations, and to leave class feeling better than when they first arrived.

History

Established in 2006.

Urth Yoga was born from an idea between friends to create a yoga oasis in the heart of Silver Lake, where people could come to practice yoga in an environmentally friendly space with easygoing teaching staff.

I used to really love it here but all of my favorite teachers are gone. The studio looks beautiful but has sort of recently taken on a strange vibe that I can’t quite place. 4 stars because it’s still a fine place and they really focus on making sure you’re doing the poses properly. But I miss the «old» Urth for sure.

Eh. This place was whatever.
The room was hot with one lazy fan, and there were no mirrors so it was difficult to follow along. The teacher kept making mistakes and her descriptions were really complicated and confusing.
I might go again if I’m in the area but wouldn’t seek it out.

I’m a newbie to yoga and a newbie to Urth studio. And being a newbie, means I’m very easily intimidated by new things and people. Well, that all stopped once I stepped into Urth and took Angela ’ s class. Wow, I’m hooked and I feel so much better.
I needed to start doing yoga because my body was starting to shut down due to years of wear and tear from being a pro snowboarder then being on my feet all day as a stylist. Angela ’ s class is the perfect pace for anyone starting out but also not super easy for intermediate levels. She mixes it up perfectly. I break a sweat every time, and leave feeling like I got a great workout. Also, I haven’t been getting pinched nerves quite as easily, my back pain has subsided and my overall health is just better. If you are looking for a non snobby, very cool, great workout yoga studio, Urth is your spot. And Angela, yout teacher.

Anusra yoga practice has changed my life, helping me get through difficult illness, injury and the mental drain that comes with both. Keric, the studio’s lead instructor, is a deeply committed and thoughtful Anusra teacher and guide. He has also brought on talented and thoughtful teachers into the studio. On my most exhausting and difficult days — when it’s hard to «show up» — Keric and his crew are an excellent reason to make the effort to go. As the studio moves towards an all-​Anusara practice, I am thrilled to see how the studio continues to develop community within its space. Deep thanks to both Keric and Kiki S. who have encouraged me to make my practice deeper and more meaningful. In gratitude.

The yoga there is fantastic.
I bought a one month unlimited series a couple of months ago, I think it was about $ 40, and I’ve been going mostly to a one hour challenging class on Fridays, the class is only nine dollars, can’t complain about that, especially now that my one month unlimited has expired.
I tried about four different teachers there.
My favorite teacher thus far is Carrie.
She’s demonstrative and quite frankly her physique is inspiring. Her class is challenging at an hour and 15 minutes, she’s all about proper form and I learned something today about how I was improperly doing Chaturanga just by watching her demonstration, so of course I had to review.

Was staying in the area and needed a good stretch, stumbled upon this place and fell in love! Check out their specially priced classes throughout the day: we went to the 4:30PM $ 9 cash class with Elke and it was great! She is a wonderful instructor in a clean, fairly priced studio. Keep up the good work, guys!

Studio seems nice but HATED Tim’s attitude/​demeanor so much I never went back after my first class of that introductory month special. Just plain rude vs. nurturing.

I think Keric is an incredible teacher, I love his classes.
I really miss the Sunday evening restorative classes with Karen. Those were the best restorative classes I’ve ever attended. Urth, bring them back!

Yoga allows you to rest during the workout, I mean who won’t love it!!!
While searching for an affordable yoga studio I came across Urth because of their great Unilocal reviews. I signed up for the introductory $ 39 unlimited monthly membership and I am sold! I have been to quite a few classes and I am very pleased with all of the instructors I have experienced. They are very informative and guide you to yoga success!

I tried the five-​buck, 6:55 in the Monday morning, kill yourself, deal at Urth. I braced myself for some bargain basement yoga, but it was anything but that. Mackie was our teacher, and she was great!
Now I’m the opposite of a yogi. Well I guess the opposite of a yogi would be that fat Indonesian baby that smokes cigarettes or a stick of butter dipped in mayo. All I’m saying is that I’m no pro, but I felt the class was a fluid hour of strenuous holds along with cardio. My heart was racing, and I feel sore already. Totally recommend Urth and Mackie!!!

Great location, friendly staff and the $ 5 beginner classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays with Billy are great: he’s super helpful, plays relaxing music and knows how to make the class flow while teaching at the same time!

5 stars for Ashley Warwick and Karen Apostolina! They are wonderful, talented, generous and funny instructors. High recommendations for their classes.
The general vibe at this studio has changed for me over the past 2 years. Many of the classes — the most popular ones — are the more athletic power /​ashtanga type. If that’s what you like, you will be happy here. I was saddened to see my favorite more slow /​yin /​iyengar style instructors lost over the past 6 months.
The students also seem to shift around more than at other studios. I don’t feel the sense of community that I do at other places. Again, the dominant vibe of the students here is the yang athletic workout type.
FYI the parking situation is a drag. I wish there was more than meter parking because nothing gets you out of the meditative mindset than wondering if you have enough time left when the class goes overtime.

Urth is a great studio. Its the perfect mix of being yoga studio chill without crossing the line into being too new age’y cheesy. Lots of guys go there which I like (so I’m not the only dude), and all the teachers are great. The $ 5 yoga hour is a steal too. Tanya Ross is the best for the $ 5 hour, but I’ve never had a bad class there.
Also, the room is fantastic which is a major consideration for me. However, they moved the instructor to the north wall which just doesn’t work right for the space. That’s the only reason for a one star reduction, but otherwise its just a great place.

Urth Yoga is great! It is my new neighborhood studio since moving to Silverlake about 6 months ago. I go for the $ 5 yoga hour classes, which they do 3 times a day M-​F. Such an amazing deal. Most of the instructors are able to give me a good meditation along with a strong vinyasa that gets the blood flowing. Word to the wise: get there early so you get a spot. The room can get very crowded. They are also really strict about locking the door once they’ve started class.
My favorite teacher is Billy Gill — he has a very upbeat, inclusive attitude and gives nice adjustments. I also recommend Mackie or Tanya. This studio has a very friendly neighborhood feeling. I remember once I forgot to bring cash, and they told me to just pay next time! That’s not something you see every day.

I liked it… just took my first yoga class at Urth. It was a basics class… and was the most advanced basics class I ever took. It seemed as though many of the people in the class had been there before… so when the instructor, Keric M, shifted us to the wall and people began doing headstands… I knew it was time to let go of my ego and admit that some people are always gonna be better than me at doing somethings…
All in all the instructor was warm, knowledgable, kind, supportive and informative. The space was simple, clean and functional. It was a good experience and I will be going back.
Also, I got lost on my way to Urth… I called… mentioned my lostness to a very nice person on the phone… got directions and when I got to Urth… I found that not only had they held the up for me to get there… but they also had a space waiting for me. Very cool and deserving of 5 stars.
