The Salvation Army Corps Community Centers

I’ve had the pleasure of spending some time here on a few occasions. What really shines for me at this Salvation Army are the people. Everyone who works here genuinely wants to be here. They care about their community and its residents and it’s evident in the way they interact and in how much they give of themselves.
This particular community center is in South Central, one of the neediest parts of LA. For me, it’s also one of the most beautiful. I break out in smiles as I drive down Central Ave. and see shining pinatas glittering in the sun, bright pieces of fruit and furniture lining the sidewalks, children in Dora pj’s holding their mothers hand. A cop car drives by every 2 minutes and transients hurl mumbled, rebellious obscenities at them. This too is beautiful to me.
ESL, computer literacy and ceramics for the grown folk.
Academics, art, computer lab, sports and performing arts for the kiddos.
There’s also a gym, dance studio, art studio, library, computer labs, classrooms and a gaming room. All of which are also open to seniors.
They also have child care that focuses on letting a child explore and discover on their own; something I find extremely important to growing minds. I feel obligated to mention that they also offer worship services, and there is light religious paraphernalia throughout the center (crosses and such).
The last time I was here was for their December toy drive. There was a line of people waiting in the frigid cold since 5am. Doors didn’t open until 9am. Staff got volunteers organized quickly and efficiently. I loved that they always try to connect volunteers with the community on a personal level — for example, during the toy drive, volunteers physically walked each person/​family in line down the aisles to pick out a toy. It gave us a chance to talk to people, play with the kids, and thank them for waiting. It also fosters a wholeness and connectivity that I feel we are sorely lacking as a species.
I highly recommend this Salvation Army to anyone in need of assistance, as well as to anyone looking to volunteer.
