Taz Varkey, MD

I found dr. Varkey through Unilocal.I read some great reviews and some not so good ones. Nevertheless, I decided to go to her. She is very lovely, understanding and helpful. At times she is rushing because she has too many patients waiting for her but that’s understansable since she is trying to help all of her patients. She has a portal system where you can review your results, request refil, email the nurse, receptionist and Dr. Varkey herself and she is very responsive. I highly recommend her.

Dr. Varkey is the best there is! I have been her patient for years and wouldn’t want it any other way. She is personable and professional and really cares about her patients. She even gave me a call after hours with results to give me the update asap to help calm my anxiety waiting. She doesn’t have to do that– but she chooses to. I couldn’t recommend her enough!

I have HMO, which Dr Varkey office doesn’t take. But the Nurse there went above and beyond to assist me. Patiently answered all my questions and gave me all the advice that no other doc office is willing to answer. Although I am not a patient there but I am really considering paying more and switch to PPO just to have Dr. Varkey as my OBGYN. I see all these great reviews and her staffs are just simply kind & amazing!

If your a new patient don’t bother calling. It’s August and they are booked out for the rest of the year!!!
Also I called twice and they rang out for 5 min the first time.

I saw Dr. Varkey for the first time yesterday and am in love with her practice! The office was clean, modern-​looking, and welcoming. The staff was friendly and worked quickly, and the bathroom was spotless. I sat with Dr. Varkey in her office so we could get acquainted and she asked about my medical history. She was extremely knowledgable and easy to talk to. My annual exam was painless. I would HIGHLY recommend her to anyone looking for an OBGYN.

My wife came to Dr Taz for a checkup. I had to be with my wife as she was new to USA and had little problem speaking in english, Taz listened carefully to my wife and took time to answer all my wife questions, even though it took more than 30 to 40 mins. I have been to some doctors in other big hospitals, the doctors hardly spends around 5 mins and always try to rush things, but Taz was very patient and spent around 30 mins answering all my wife’s questions. My wife was soo happy visitng Dr Taz. Im changing my company insurance in the next month for the first time from hmo to ppo, just for doctor Taz. Thanks Taz for helping my wife.

So I was referred to Dr Varkey by my PMD. I needed to see her for a pap and to start BC. I was reluctant to go because I despise Pap smears and I have had the same Ob-​gyn for 5 years who took me forever to find. Anyways I go for my first checkup and get called into her office. She takes a full health history on me, which took about 30 min. I have been going to the gyn since I was 18 and have never had that happen. Once she went through my whole history she formulates a plan. She expresses her concerns to me and wants to run further tests. I was not totally convinced but she told me that if it was her sister she would do the same thing, so I agreed to proceed.
After that talk, I had my Pap smear and it was painless and she made me as comfortable under the circumstances. I was then scheduled for a biopsy and further blood work.
In 2 days the nurse called me with my results and set me up on the patients portal where you have access to all your medical files and can even email the MD.
In the meantime, I was reading about having a biopsy and was getting terrified after all the women saying what great pain they were in. I emailed Dr. V and her nurse called me back in about 2 hours to help alleviate my concerns.
So I came in for my biopsy, and it was uncomfortable but NOT painful. Dr V was gentle and help to keep me calm.
Biopsy was done, blood drawn, ultrasound completed and the nurse sent my prescription for my BC.
In 2 visits I had a Pap, blood work, Endometrial biopsy, vaginal ultrasound, and birth control.
I felt comfortable that everything was completed and checked out.
Her nurse is great and front desk secretary was efficient. I haven’t had any billing issuers.
Hands down I think Dr Varkey is a amazing gynecologist and a warm caring person.
And just for the record I am a Trauma RN. But this review was from a patients perspective.

I LOVE Dr. Varkey. I cannot even begin to express how much I love her! It’s not normal to love your OBGYN as much as I love her, haha. She is the best doctor — so caring, so knowledgeable. She spends so much time with her patients. I trust her completely. I recommend her to everyone!

Dr. Varkey and her office are amazing. I gave birth to my daughter on the 6^th of October 2014 and I went through a 66 hour labour! Dr. Varkey was there with me over the phone and checking on me continuously to make sure I was ok. The actual birth was great and Cedars Sinai was more than great. The nurses at Dr. Varkey’s office were also amazing. Jennifer was awesome! I have recommended her to many of my friends and will continue to do is in a heart beat.

Excellent Obstetrician!
Varkey is direct and straight to the point. She tells you what you need to know and does what she needs to do. Point blank period.
If you are pregnant or are planning to conceive, I definitely recommend her.
Please note: Parking is not validated. Your best bet is to park on the streets surrounding the building. Mid-​day tends to yield the most available spaces.

My review is a bit different, because it is not based on ‘feelings”, or on billing issues.
I am a highly trained medical professional, i was on staff at Cedars for years, and my speciality was critical care medicine.
So, on a Professional level:
Dr Varkey is good, really good. She is completely professional, she is thorough, she is careful, she is knowledgeable. She knows her stuff. she is on top of new breakthroughs and protocols, she is a frontrunner in the field of women’s health. You are not going to get mediocre medicine here. There are OB/GYN’s out there with a far too high C-​section rate (red flag!) she is not one of them. I am very careful about who I use and generally have seen them with other patients before i ever let them touch me. I would not want to go to anyone else but Dr. Varkey.
On a Personal level:
She is kind, she takes her time if you have an issue. She gets on with it if you don’t. She cares how you are doing all-​around, not only «between the waist to the hips». I brought a family member to her, and I am very careful about that, since this loved one suffers from anxiety and panic attacks. They love her and has been seeing her for several years now. I had to have a uterine ablation done, and she gave me every option and every possibility was laid out on the table beforehand, I had a choice, and she did the surgery herself, did not ‘turf’ me off to a stranger. Dr, Varkey is very professional, and very sensitive in every situation.
Office Staff:
If only every office everywhere had people like Jennifer and Stephanie. Polite, professional, but real and caring. In office blood work is drawn there, no driving across town to a lab, and their phlebotomist is as ‘painless” as they come. They have loads of information in print to take with you so you can review after you get home and realize that you were too stressed out to remember anything. The waiting room is clean, and pleasant. There is parking under the building. (It’s expensive, but you are in Beverly Hills, not podunk Idaho, parking is expensive everyplace here).
Billing/​Payment policies:
Oh good Lord people, do some of the reviewers here not understand what malpractice insurance, rent, billing departments, payroll, etc, etc, etc, cost? Blame the insurance companies and the government, not Dr. Varkey! At least she will still take some of the paltry reimbursements form crappy insurance, many good doctors won’t anymore! If you want cheap care or something for nothing, go to County General. i can guarantee you they are not ‘gouging’ you, but in fact, are the ones being ‘gouged”, grow up! The days of über rich doctors driving around in Ferraris and living lavish lifestyles are long gone, and for that you can thank the politicians who passed horrendous health care legislation making your costs abominable. to delete a star or two because you had to pay for your care is such entitlement. Unbelievable. You don’t just ‘get what you pay for’ with Dr. Varkey, you get WAY more than you are paying for, trust me.
One More Note:
Dr Varkey will no longer be delivering babies. But for your all your general Gynecological care, (be it healthy check-​ups or a specific problem or issue, and for your first trimester of pregnancy when it is the most crucial to have the best), she is the best, hand down, no debate. And I have see it all.

I sure don’t understand any negative review of Dr Varkey! That said, I definitely understand the positive ones! She is kind, thorough and attentive and everyone who works in the office is great and very pleasant and friendly. I went for an annual the other day and Dr Varkey suspected something and wanted me to get a sonogram and lo and behold my surprise when she did it herself! I even said so much but she said she wanted to do it herself so she could see what’s going on as opposed to someone else messengering info. She is a great doctor and I feel very lucky to have found her. Cannot recommend her more highly.

I went into see Dr. Varkey based on the great Unilocal reviews. I needed a 2^nd opinion about my pregnancy… My dr told me RIGHT BEFORE the holidays that it was a miscarriage and I really didn’t want to believe it. He was also very unprofessional and asked me out on a date in a roundabout way… (Ugh, yes when I have the energy I will file a formal complaint against him!!!)
I called Dr. Varkey’s office to see if they could squeeze me in before leaving for the holidays — THAT DAY and in TWO HOURS and the gal on the phone (Jennifer) squeezed me in during their lunch hour!!! I couldn’t believe that she would do that and was so grateful because I needed to know desperately whether or not I was pregnant and what to expect over the holidays i.e. what to expect if I had the miscarriage, whether or not I should travel, etc.
Dr. Varkey was extremely professional, knowledgeable and gave me the gentle yet FIRM closure that I needed to hear. I appreciate how she listens yet knows exactly what she’s talking about and gave me the reassurance that I needed to hear. I was able to leave her office, go into the holidays with my boyfriend and begin the process of healing with him… all due to Dr. Varkey & her staff’s compassion to squeeze me in & her firm yet comforting demeanor.
I wish their office was in my insurance network — highly recommend!!!

Overcharged consultations.
Before i went in, i spoke with the front office about my insurance not covering me at the moment, and asked how much an STD test was. They gave me a certain estimate of 140 – 160. It seemed reasonable so i went in. I ended up paying 160 and i was okay with that. A month later i receive a bill of 155 for the STD tests i got done that day. So i call them and they tell me that the 160 they charged me for was for the consultation not the tests, that it was a separate bill for anything that had to do with lab testing? What? when i first spoke to the lady she told me i was paying for the tests plus consultation. This isn’t the first gynecologist i have came to, and i have never heard of separate billing for consultation and lab testing.
Never coming here again.

I have never written a review for Unilocal or a doctor. Today, Dr Varkey blew my mind on how caring and provided me with care at a time of urgency and panic.
I have actually been impressed since my first visit. My patient experience should be how each and everyone who is sick should be treated. I came in, did not wait. The staff were all caring, human and kind.
Back to today, I had an emergency, Dr. Varkey immediately got on the phone, provided me with care, ease and comfort. Took the time to explain what I needed to do and how I should take my prescription as well as if sickness persisted.
I highly recommend this OBGYN!

Dr. Varkey is pleasant enough, but her handling of my wife’s delivery left a lot to be desired. She gets low marks because she induced my wife at 39 weeks without any sort of medical necessity. Or at least no explanation was provided at the time and we didn’t think to question her recommendation. It was not something we had requested or wanted but we trusted her judgment.
The induction then led to a c-​section after the induced labor was not effective in bringing the baby down. It’s possible that a c-​section might have occurred regardless of the unnecessary induction since our baby was on the very large size, but now we’ll never know.
While hindsight is 20/​20, even my wife’s current doctors don’t see anything in her charts from that first pregnancy to indicate that induction was necessary or recommended. Our story is unfortunately almost straight out of the Netflix documentary The Business of Being Born. Very disappointed.

Dr. Varkey has been my OBYGN since 2011. She was my cousin’s and delivered my little cousin years and years ago. I thought she was great, and was really happy I found her until I got pregnant… AND LOVED HER. Our son is almost a year old and my fiancé, who went to every visit, is still over the moon about the service we received our entire pregnancy.
The 411, Long story short;
The office is private, and it’s a solo practice
Varkey is thorough, raises the bar on medical standards
Cedars is the best hospital and having an OBGYN who is this amazing AND delivers makes a world of difference
The parking is a little tough (unless you want to go the parking garage every time) but that’s LA and a few extra minutes before solves that.
Switched to email confirmation so it’s even easier.
It’s a doctor’s office, and business. There are bound to be times where you wait, miscommunication, personality clicks, charges, fees, and different opinions. BUT for us they were great about communicating wait times, hold times, and what you’re getting charged for.
Stephanie at front desk is really organized and nice, and Jennifer is professional and caring. You get what you pay for, don’t be cheap about your health.
Long story details;
The medical care, screening and appointments are some of the best you can receive. Even our pediatrician was impressed at the information we had from my pregnancy due to the testing and care from Varkey. The building was a good location (we drove all the way from RPV and I can still say that) and trimester screening and her on-​call OBYGN is in the same building.
My son was a week late, but she didn’t push for inducing or a C-​Section. She monitored and let us know all the facts of options, left the rest to what we were comfortable with. She has a to-​the-​point personality, but not fluffing stuff up is a big plus for me. She will give you flat out facts, which can seem overwhelming your first few visits. She is still friendly, and open to whatever we wanted to do birth plan wise.
I come from a line of nurses, have been in the room for the birth of my godkids, nephews, from home births to hospitals, took every class Cedar’s had to offer. We went into it pretty open and educated, because nothing is perfect or right for everyone. I can not ever thank her enough or put into words how amazing she handled our delivery. It was rough with cord issues and my health at risk, and it simply would not have been handled as well as it was without her expertise. She stayed calm, no matter how crazy the room or hospital staff got, and was a real team with my fiancé and I. I hate this term, but seriously, she was a rock star. We didn’t truly appreciate having one, talented doctor my entire pregnancy and delivery until that moment.

Dr. Varkey is wonderful. Easy to talk to, nice office, kind and attentive staff. I can’t complain about a single aspect of my experience after being her patient for two years now. My pharmacy told me there was a problem with my prescription, I called Dr. Varkey’s office and they fixed it immediately. I wanted to double check some test results from a prior year, I called them and they confirmed immediately for me. I had a concern about something, so I called Dr. Varkey and she took the time to speak with me personally. There’s just nothing bad to say. She really cares about her patients and wants what is best for them.

I have to sadly say that I am out looking for a new ob/​gyn. Since Dr. Varkey became so popular within the past year or so (because of great Unilocal reviews I bet) her service went way down the hill.
I didn’t wrte this review earlier because it would be blasting with anger. It’s been a few months now and I think my review won’t be so emotional anymore but still true.
First of all, her stuff is not helpful anymore as it used to be. They don’t try to make billing easier and won’t tell you that something is not covered until you get a bill for $ 500 like I did after a VU. Secondly, I was never informed that Dr. Varkey wasn’t taking my insurance anymore and I had only learned about it when the bill came in the mail.
Be prepared to wait up to an hour. I used to be the only one in the waiting area for my scheduled appointment but the last time I came there were more people waiting than there were chairs, and she was running an hour behind.
I think that Dr. Varkey is still quite a good doctor p but she has no time for you anymore! When I was in her office she would run in and out serving to other patients at the same time. I didn’t like it because it felt to me like she is now only about the money — the more patients she takes in the more profit she gets.
I also feel that she overcharges for little things. FOr example to get a copy of your records she charges a flat fee although the law requires her to charge per page something like 15 cents. Her stuff explanation to that was «That’s just what HER rules are.» Cleary she is above the law.
The deal breaker for me was when I tried to contact her to renew a prescription and I tried and tried and tried for weeks. So one day I just came by the office asking for a renewal at the front desk. Simple as that, right? Well, no she decided she needs to see me. So I waited for some time before she took me to her office. Then she asked me some basic questions and gave me a refill. Two weeks later I had a bill waiting for me at home, from her for some big money for a «consultation».
Well, at the end I don’t wish to be a patient of a doctor who will do everything to make you pay for the smallest things. My regular doctor is availble by email and phone if you want to ask a question or two. But if you become a patient of Dr, Varkey you will have to pay for everything (I couldn’t even get her on the phone once to ask about my blood test she run on me).
