Shelly’s Dance and Costume

Love the store, they have a great variety of Halloween and dance costumes. Furthermore they have all kinds of dance shoes, ballroom shoes, ballet, jazz, dance pumps and much more.
You can find almost anything to complete an outfit like tights, tutus, body decoration and wigs.
Plus the employees are really friendly, helpful and you can find really low priced items with great quality. The employees will try the best to make you happy and are really considerate of your budget.

I was in a bind to find 21 very specific cheer uniforms in less than a week and called Shelly’s. Although they did not have them in store, they were extremely helpful in having these uniforms custom made and ready in less than a week! I was a bit nervous with the quick turn around and the specifics needed for the uniform but they did an AMAZING job. I couldn’t have asked for better customer service and willingness to go the extra mile for me! Thank you Shelly’s!!!

I had an incredible experience at shelly’s last week. I had a costume party to go and needed a gymnastics leotard. Being a guy, I felt a little awkward at first, but the nice girl that was working that night pulled some off racks that would fit me and gave me a few to try on! She then even went to find more while I was in the dressing room to see what I like best. I ended up having a really good time here after being hesitant at first. I have another costume party next week and now probably will go as a ballerina with another leotard and tutu, only because of my great experience. I hope she had as much fun helping me find my costume as I did!

They have everything and if they don’t have it they can either make it for you «custom» or order it! I love this place! The people there are so nice and their seamstress does quality quality work!

I went to Shelly’s looking for a pair of tights for my dance class I started taking. What a wonderful store, they literally have everything for dance under 1 roof!
The owner, Shelly was so funny and nice, not often you find a such a gem of a store in LA with kind staff and a lovely owner!
Also noticed they have costumes, I will definitely come back in October to get my Halloween costumes.

WARNING: Shockingly poor customer service!
So my wife and I went to Shelly’s this afternoon to purchase a white unitard for a one time photography project. My wife had called and spoke to Shelly, who had asked if we wanted a scoop or a high neck (we needed a high neck).
There were several kinds and my wife had asked for the cheapest one (basically, it was going to be edited out to create a ‘ghost mannequin’, so we really didn’t care about the quality).
So we get there and see that the price is $ 48.00. After looking for an employee for five minutes, a lady tells us that the $ 38.00 suit is the scoop neck. I should have taken a picture, as it was dirty and wrinkled.
I explain that we’d have to decline, as we indicated that we needed a high neck and were told the cheapest was $ 38. The exact same suit is $ 29.99 on Amazon (I was fine with spending another $ 10 to get it in town, but less fine with an additional $ 20) and we friendly all agree that everything is cheaper online. They screwed up the pricing, but that’s really no big deal, as I have Amazon Prime and wasn’t really too upset.
That should have been the end of it and we were getting ready to leave, but then we hear some angry lady shouting «I TOLD THEM THE SCOOP NECK WAS $ 38 AND SHE SAID SHE WANTED THE ‘CHEAPEST ONE’» A) you were flat out wrong, B) Don’t try to make us out to be some penny pinching cheapskate you horrid person C) The hell are you so pissed off about? DAAAAYYYUUUUM
We try to make a beeline for the door and she screams — YES, SCREAMS «WHERE IS SHE!!!» then she sees us and snaps at my wife «are you her?» and I immediately replied in a flat voice «no worries, we’re leaving».
She then actually tried to argue with two people who were actively trying to leave her little run down dump of a store about what she did and didn’t say, scolding us, so I cut her off and said «no problem, we were just leaving, have a good night» to which she snottily replies in a condescending, sing-​song voice «yeah yeah you too» or something like that.
I was stunned. Hey look, I was only slightly miffed that the price was higher than what we told and we spent an hour of our time driving out there. Life goes on and we had already figured out something else (unfortunately it was too late to order from Amazon and receive our shipment in time by that point), but why in the world are you being so NASTY and mean to your customers? I had never spoken to this woman before in my life and we were just leaving anyways — was it really necessary to chase after us and try to scold us?
We’d actually heard good things about Shelly’s from a Youtuber that my wife watches, but you know what? This is the same junk that’s sold on Amazon for half the price, or even cheaper in the fashion district downtown. My recommendation would be to save your time and money and skip this cluttered dump.

Had such a lovely experience here! I needed ballet shoes and the nice lady helped me find the right pair. She knew exactly the difference between the different types of shoes and was very friendly. I also got stocking socks for a great price. Overall this place has almost anything you need costume and ballet related. I love this place so much!

AMAZING STORE! I went in to grab one last thing for my Halloween costume and I found so much stuff and ideas for next year. The ladies and guys that work there are SOO nice and helpful (and funny)!! I called two of my friends, while in the store, that I knew were still trying to find stuff and they are coming in tomorrow! I can’t believe I’ve lived in LA for 4 years and just found this store. Will be back for more than just Halloween finds. I’m also a dancer and they have a ton of dance stuff here too! This store is a true gem! If you need any costume or dance clothing I HIGHLY recommend coming here. The prices are fair and again they will have what you need! Thank y’all for being awesome and having such a great store!

I went to Shelly’s for the first time on Monday. I needed to buy my ballet costume for my new class and they had so many options ! Everybody was very friendly and helpful. I’m glad that I went there. People that are looking for costumes for Halloween parties should definitely stop there. They have a little bit of everything. Don’t forget to check in on Unilocal!You can get 20% off !

Dance stores here in town certainly aren’t the friendliest of places; sometimes I feel I should rent someone’s daughters and walk into this kind of place to see if they’ll acknowledge me then. I take into account how many people are in the shop against how many employees there are. This can make a difference with service indeed, but it doesn’t hurt to give a quick,‘we’ll be right with you’ or something similar to people who are browsing for more than a few minutes.
I was here looking for a specific warmup piece by Bloch, Capezio or Gaynor-​Minden and I was only finding children’s sizes in a brand I was not familiar with. Would have loved to have asked if they carry any of the above pieces, but quite frankly, I didn’t have the time to wait after about 5 minutes of wandering around.
Since they seem to have some decent halloween costumes, I’m keeping this at 2-​stars instead of my intended 1.

Can we talk about how amazing this place is???
I came in on a Sunday to buy a leotard for an upcoming dance party. I walked in scared. I walked out a confident beauty.
I’m a big dude. I have crazy ideas and ummm… I’m a dude. I asked myself before walking in, «What am I doing at this store???»
I have a huge sense of comedy and I fit right in with the staff. I was toured through the entire building to find a leotard. I am recreating a Beyoncé look to parody. The staff called me Beyoncé, brought me shoes and tutus and leotards. I walked around the store. I was applauded and had a genuine good time.
The selection is huge. The ideas are rampant. If they don’t have it in stock, they’ll make it for you. I simply said my idea and everyone ran with it. There was none of that bad talk like, «that’s crazy or not gonna work.»
Their answers were, «Ok. We gotta make this work. How soon do you need it? When’s your party, Beyoncé?»
I loved how light-​hearted everyone was throughout my hour at this location.
This place has all things dance, there are a bunch of kids costumes, some dance costumes, but mostly for women and girls. There are plenty of items that will fit men too. Shoes, wigs, accessories, glue, glitter, and bags.
I had the time of my life here. I can’t wait to go back. Thank you for such a wonderful experience. You’re in my book now. I’m definitely going to refer my friends and family here.

This place is EXPENSIVE. Plus it’s extremely hard to get anyone’s attention to help you. The plus is they have a wide selection even when it is not Halloween. A great go-​to place if you need a costume in a hurry, just go in knowing that you will be paying more than at other places or online.

POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE. Bought a pair of ballet slippers and had the sales person fit my young daughter. I trusted that they knew what they were doing because I had no idea how they were supposed to fit. Turns out she wore them once to ballet and had to take them off because they were hurting. Ballet teacher said they were at least a size too small as she had to curl her toes to fit in them. The sales person checked them on her and said they were correctly sized and that they would stretch and last a long time.
When I called them they said they wouldn’t take them back because they can’t sell dirty shoes (she wore them indoors for about 15 minutes) and weren’t willing to accept any responsibility for advising me on what size to buy. I was really surprised because I’ve been a customer there for years.

Only four stars because a lot of the merch here is on the cheesy side. BUT they do have a huge selection and very efficient service. When I came here on Halloween, the place was packed with customers, and the staff handled the rush like pros — including fielding a plethora of phone calls from people who were obviously stressed out about getting last-​minute costumes. There were staffers running around the store fetching stuff so that the salesclerks behind the register never had to leave their post.
Phone rings. Salesclerk picks up.
Salesclerk: «Shelly’s.» (pause) «Yeah, we have Kermit. Adult or kids?» (into PA) «Adult Kermit. Adult Kermit.»

We have been going to Shelly’s for 21 years. It is the first place we think of whenever we need anything for dance or an accessory for dressing up or even today, Halloween! The line was ridiculous and they handled us really efficiently and politely. Even the customers were in a good mood. Anytime we have had a problem they always handle it. Shelly helps us still all of the time, but her staff is great! Thanks Shelly! Look forward to the next 21 years with our kids.

I came here at 1:00pm on halloween day and they still had an excellent selection with good prices even on their higher end custom stuff. Staff very friendly and helpful also. Line was long but to be expected with all the last minute monkeys looking for monkey costumes like myself.

Lots and lots of stuff! This is a big place. My little guy and I came by looking for a dinosaur costume. They didn’t have what we were looking for, but that’s just us being overly picky. This is a great place to get your Halloween on.

I had the BEST time Halloween costume shopping at Shelly’s yesterday! Everyone that works there is so friendly and helpful. Shelly’s literally has it all and this is going to be my one stop costume shop for all occasions!!! AND Shelly the owner helped me out the entire time, giving me ideas about my costume. LOVE SHELLY’S!!!

Love Shelly’s! I get my workout pants and day to day leggings here and they have lasted me YEARS. So happy with the quality and the services. They do an amazing job!

This place is wonderful! Tons of dance costumes, leotards, ballet shoes — pretty much everything you could need for a young dancer. If you have kids who dance or want to dance, bring them here and wonder around try stuff on and have a good time.
This is also a great place to come to buy both children’s and adults costumes. I was able to try on a number of the Halloween costumes I’ve seen at the online costume shops. Their prices seemed quite reasonable especially if I don’t have to deal with ordering and then returning 3 different sizes of 4 different Halloween costumes in the attempt to find something fun but that still covers my ass.
I’m not sure if they have a parking lot in the back — there is metered street parking that is free on Sundays.
