Sabores De Oaxaca

I was driving by & saw that it was a Oaxacan restaurant, so I decided to stop & try it…
Oaxaca is a state in Mexico & their food is very good.
It’s a hole in the wall — nothing fancy, but I wasn’t disappointed — it was good… It is home-​made style food.
I had the Nopal salad, the Mole chicken tamal
(Oaxacan tamales are made with banana leaf instead of corn husks) and last — a regular (corn) tamal with cheese & rajas (chile).
Banana leaves give Oaxacan tamales a different flavor. I like Oaxacan tamales, they make a good one.
What it lacks in décor it had in flavor. Décor is generic cheap Mexican, with cloth tablecloths covered with glass, and some TVs showing Univision.
Their chips were kind of stale, but the rest of the food was great!
Very affordable — $ 19 with agua fresca & desert.

Great food, fast and friendly service… a few items on the menu weren’t available that day, but what we got was fantastic.

Super slow service. The food came lukewarm at best. In all honesty, it seemed to have been simply reheated and not freshly cooked, with the exception of the tortilla chips which were the only decent thing.
My husband asked for his burrito to be covered in mole negro and the lady said the «red salsa» was the same thing. I guess she didn’t anticipate me ordering the mole negro plate in Spanish. The plates came out and they were quite obviously two different sauces. On top of that, the meat inside his burrito was cold. Not even lukewarm. The mole negro lacked flavor, while the rice had hard AND mushy spots.
When the lady came to ask if we needed anything else, we said no and she took our plates. We sat there for another ten minutes waiting for the check and I finally told my husband to go pay at the counter. Apparently, she was sitting in the back eating, and when she saw him get up, she finally started the process of bringing the check. That also took her another five minutes. As I put my card into the checkbook, I looked up and saw her start to roll her eyes but she smiled when she saw me look up, and then walked away. There were another ten minutes of her trying to swipe my card before she came back to say «you know what, it’s not working.»
«The card?» I asked. «No, my machine.» And then walked away. Well, thanks for telling me where I can find an ATM, am I right?! The hubby ended up having to walk caddy corner to the mini mart for an ATM. Something I wouldn’t normally complain about, except for it topping off this horrible experience. In general, I really hate complaining on the Internet as I feel it’s become the thing to do these days but i just couldn’t let this one go. I love Oaxacan food and have eaten at most Oaxacan restaurants in the area. This is by far the worst. All in all, we spent an hour and a half inside this place due to slow service (it wasn’t even close to busy), and the food was terrible. I won’t be coming back.

It was so good that I tried to eat everything in the menu. I even had food to go. This place has authentic Oaxaca taste.

This is so delicious! Huge menu with so many choices. We got a shrimp cocktail and it came in this huge shell dish. So cool! The Tlayuda was massive and amazingggg! I got cheese enchiladas. Their red sauce is on the sweet side but very good. Great service. So friendly and accommodating! The service wasn’t as slow as everyone else on here is making it seem.

I really wish I could say better things about this restaurant because the people were so nice and friendly…

Slow Service: We waited about 30mins to receive our simply fountain drinks, and they still forgot one.
Food: we were hungry walking in and hungry walking out. I ordered the Carne Asada and it was the most difficult piece of meat to cut, and the side dish of rice was cold. The appetizer we ordered had hair in it and it came AFTER our entrees.
Atmosphere: THE MUSIC WAS TOO FLIPPIN’ LOUD. I couldn’t even hear myself think. It was all amazing music too but I couldn’t enjoy time with my family or my thoughts. I kept looking forward to the guy taking a break, but unfortunately it never happened…
THIS IS NOT A BAR, THE MUSIC SHOULD NOT BE LOUDER THAN YOUR CUSTOMERS.
Really disappointed.
I had started this review with two stars but just thinking about how horrible our time was, it went down to ONE star.

Food was awesome, the service was fast n efficient couldn’t be any more satisfied, everything is clean an the server really took care of us, would definitely recommend this place

and to think I almost didn’t came bcuz a read a bad review that said they had a «b».I never eat a places that have a «b»
good think a came to see it for myself, the food is great and the service is excellent !! I’m definitely coming back !

Flavorless salsa, the kitchen couldn’t get either of our simple orders correct and when the food did come out it was bland and sloppy. I left feeling sick and bummed I didn’t just get a sandwich up the road for ½ the price. Skip it kids.

Interesting menu. I tried the fried grasshoppers, but didn’t like them. I got the chicken mole which was excellent, and my friends got burritos.

Food is great but the service is bad and the waitress was very rude. Had to go to the counter twice to ask for service. Will never go there again

The food here was delicious and the ladies here were super nice. The reason for the 1 star is for the hair we found in the salad :(

I’ve only had the vegetarian burrito and the vegitarian breakfast burrito and the were both amazing!!! By far my favorite burrito in LA! Conveniently next to a mechanic/​body shop. So you can get an oil change while you eat! Can’t say enough good things about this place and can’t wait to try the mole!

I love this place. It’s a hole in the wall with an outdoor enclosed patio. If you don’t mind the dingy vibe it’s worth it for the delicious food. The ingredients are fresh and the flavors are layered.
Note: They are in the process of expanding so maybe the dingy vibe is gonna change or maybe it will just be bigger dingier.
Either way I’m gonna keep on coming back.

This review applies to early morning service… My wife was real excited to try this oaxacan restaurant and first impressions were good… A little funky décor but cute. It was slow service since the cook doubled as a waiter it seemed. She was the only one here. The menu had some delicious looking breakfast but when she came to take our order we were informed that due to a big party last night she was all out of french Toast, hash browns etc. All she had was eggs scrambled with some hams. The hot chocolate was on the high end of good quality but lacked that push to make it delicious. It was good food and will be back to try breakfast hopefully their stocked next time.

The food is delicious! The service is pretty meh. The server was nice, except that she would disappear and wouldn’t come back for ages — and they weren’t busy. Took ages to get our orders in, took ages to get our drinks. Never came around to see if we needed anything until we were done eating. Took forever to get the check and then it took even longer to get them to take it. In fact, she never came back. I had to get up and take it to her. I gave her a 20% tip anyway, but it almost hurt to do it considering that we pretty much got no service. We walked in there at 6:30 and didn’t walk out until after 8pm! And we’re quick eaters…
I’ll definitely go back at some point, but it’s going to have to be when I have all night to try and have dinner.

A few weeks back I found myself in Culver City for a friend’s gallery opening around the corner from this spot. We ended up barging in with about 10 hungry art lovers at around 8pm since it was on the way back to the cars. There weren’t very many patrons at this time, but more and more showed up to fill up the space as we were finishing our meals. The place is tiny, and the only seating available is in their little out door makeshift seating patio.
The food is super inexpensive and if one were to judge the place solely on some of the fucked up décor inside the seating area they’d never guess that surprisingly delicious foods come out of that kitchen. I tried the red mole and chicken enchiladas and was very pleased with the sweet, smoky, slightly spicy mole and juicy chicken pieces in my enchiladas. I also stole some of al pastor from my bf’s torta and it was tender, seasoned well and piled super high on a gigantic, fresh roll with beans, guac and other veggies.
I was a little disappointed that my meal came standard with pinto instead of black beans since I assumed the latter would come with my meal at a Oaxacan joint, but I know to specify next time.
