Never tattoo hastily.
I took that to heart. I wasn’t going to be one of those mopes with the harridan-ex’s name tattooed on my ass.
So I waited to choose first to get tattooed, then the subject matter until I reached 40 and my son was born.
The theme is biomechanics. Chip Delaney’s vivid space opera, Nova — humans have gone cybernetic, piloting heavy starships jacked directly into their nervous systems — plugged deep into my 14-​year-​old soul the year I read it, rattling my brass ribs… More…
I paid a meth-​jittery Hollywood artist of some older repute (I only discovered later) but veteran skill put my own design at the base of my spine. And while I’ve never seen it live — only in mirrors — I’d always felt it was just an early sketch, knocked out on order by someone who didn’t really *feel* it.
About five years later, on a tattooist-​hunt, I met the great Justin Lewis — and he completely got it.
He transformed my very basic sketch into this baroque, industrial-​grade access hatch, the blood-​red edges of which revealed a titanium clutch festooned with circuitry and illuminted by tiny orange trouble lights.
Today, he added lining and shading for new segments of the sleeve piece — a set of service ports into the inner mechanics of my left arm. Color comes next. (image here:

Justin’s work still has me completely stunned: When I bend my arm, the lines of the radius and the ulna pivot through the elbow joint, as if it’s swinging on sealed bearings from my chromed humerus.
His talent and his excellent soul are huge assets for Pure.

Rachel Bickley has done pretty much all of my tattoo’s (or fixed the one’s she didn’t!) .
She is just amazing to work with… lovely girl with a kick ass personality and great artistic skillzzzzzzzz.
she just started working at pure tattoo (where i love to go because everyone else there is just as awesome as rachel!). she was previously at the purple panther… but she’s moved on to better things.

Pure is no more! it has closed! but if you would like to get tattooed by the amazing rachel, she has opened a new shop on Melrose Blvd (7704 ½) called Immaculate Conception. It should be up and running next week.

Damn you Richard C for being the first to review this wonderful wonderful place — and six months ago at that! I guess I shouldn’t have waited so long to get the job done. :)
This review is about a total sweetheart named Justin Lewis
— this particular sweetheart named Justin Lewis works at Pure Tattoo in Hollywood. I was referred to him via a friend who has known Justin for years who recently went to see him to get his first tattoo. Let me just say that I have been asking every friend I knew with a tattoo (and I have a LOT of them) what artist they would recommend for a piece I have been planning on for over a year now. It is a very special piece for me and not every tattoo artist would have done the job right. But after seeing my friend David’s tattoo done by Justin my mind was made up and I couldn’t make my appointment fast enough. So my appointment was made, and I went in the next day to drop off my artwork so that he could make a stencil and study it for a bit. I don’t know if this is necessarily required but hey, I’m a Virgo and like to have all of my ducks in a row. I also put in a call to my brother who came up on that blessed Monday to give me the moral support I needed (yea right, more like I called my brother so that he could sit there and point his finger and laugh at how much pain I was in — thanks, Dane).
Needless to say my fourth tattoo experience was by far my BEST. The shop is immaculate, the guys are hilarious and very respectful of your opinions while being completely professional. Justin was a total gentleman as I sat there grimacing in pain while he painted the most beautiful picture on my ribcage (see my pics for more details). My brother is planning on making an appointment with Justin and if you are in the market for a beautifully executed tattoo I would recommend you do the same. The price is right and if you book tell him Aunny D sent you, he might even give you, well he might give you a hug. ;-)

After many, many years of being ink free and having all of my close friends with their own tattoos, I decided to finally take the plunge. What better place to get it than at a tattoo parlor owned by a close friend.
Yeah, I know what you’re thinking… «Oh great, a review from the dude’s friend.» That’s not my style homies.
What you’ll find by going at Pure Tattoo is a pretty cool shop with good artists and good service. Damon Blitz specializes in portrait and traditional work, while Sung «Keyn» Song can do pretty much everything. Traditional, Japanese, real life, portrait… etc. There’s no attitude at this shop and everyone is real helpful and knowledgable, so you don’t have to worry about messing up and getting a tattoo that goes against some sort of tradition or history. They also do piercings.
