People Who Care Youth Center

I was very delighted to type in People Who Care Youth Center in the search bar and find that it had already been added– although no one had reviewed it.
I work at this awesome center through a Program called Operation Read.
Operation Read is a literacy initiative through the County of Los Angeles Probation Department that provides free one-​on-​one and small group tutoring to youth that are two or more grades below grade level in reading, writing and comprehension. The program emphasizes learning through phonics, reading aloud and to oneself, interactive games, and writing activities.
Operation Read tutors at-​risk youth in the juvenile halls, residential treatment facilities (camps), group homes, and in the local community. Services are provided in collaboration with the school, after-​school and on Saturdays.
This center is super awesome for providing pre-​teens and teenagers in the South Los Angeles area with a save place to come to after school where they can get help with any academic subject matter.
The tutors who work here act as counselors and mentors for the youth. They provide an essential service to many of these kids who live very tough lives including the reality of gang violence, incarcerated parents, violence at home/​broken homes, lack of funding at schools, no after school programs, etc, etc, etc…
Right now PWCYC is a really run-​down building– luckily, we are waiting for construction to finish in our newest center right next door to the new one.
This is an awesome place for the South Los Angeles community!
