Partnership Tutors

My son (8^th grade) is really smart. I’m not just saying that as a proud parent! However, he suffers from ADHD. Because of this, he hadn’t been doing his homework, was failing tests and writing shoddy papers. My husband and I tried to work with him, but he wouldn’t listen to us, and every discussion turned into an argument. We were at our wits’ end.
Then a friend — whose daughter has similar issues — recommended this group, Partnership Tutors.
I emailed them, and Rupert — one of the tutors — immediately responded. They aren’t a tutoring company, just a few tutors who advertise together. At first I was skeptical, but they explained it was because everyone involved was more interested in working directly with students than they were with the corporate structure. When I explained what the trouble was, they quickly assigned me to Julie, one of their tutors. After a consultation and seeing how he studied, she explained that in fact it wasn’t just the ADHD that was hurting my son — he was dealing with a lot of related test and paper writing anxiety, which had caused this cycle of avoidance. She and my son talked, a lot, and as she helped him with his anxiety, worked on his organization issues, and found fun ways that got him passionate about his work (suggesting he write a paper on The Hunger Games and using his favorite movie, The Dark Knight, as a way to explain theme and structure!). Suddenly, we were noticing marked changes in his work.
The other great thing about the company is that they’re really honest about who is strongest in which subjects. They’ll send you someone who tailors to what your child needs instead of just any tutor. They really care about their students, and are clearly doing this because they love teaching. I highly recommend them.
