Panaderia La Fama

Out of convenience, I sometimes buy the pan dulce at the local grocery stores (Vons), but it doesn’t compare to the real stuff here at LaFama. The last time I visited, the breads were super fresh, still warm, and they were so… soft! I love… and have only seen the breads with crystal sugars on top here at this bakery. Def five star worthy if you can get them as fresh as I did every time you go.

I am very picky with my pan dulce… i just recieved a bag with some from here. I will tell you they are so delicious! Moist and so much flavor. Most deffinetly will go buy some, although im in San Gabriel Valley.

Have been looking for a Real Mexican bakery on my route to work. Have came across many who claim to be a Panaderia. Most of them were out of my way, bread was wasn’t fresh and some stale!
This place is clean cashier is super friendly all smiles! The bread though was off the hook! Sweet, soft, and tastes fresh! Highly recommend it!!!

There pan dulce is so bomb! The only complaint of you come later on in the day there bolio is supper hard and not fresh! Other than that go in the AM

small selection. bread doesn’t taste fresh. I usually get my pan dulce from El Pavo in Lincoln Heights which is much much better. This is my second time buying bread here and I don’t think I’m going back.

Are you a panadero? Well, i saw a sign that they’re looking to hire one, so come and apply! This place is hidden on Ford blvd in between a psychic/​palm reader and zacatecas raspados. I’ve never tried their bolillos but their coffee, conchas and whole wheat bread are good. One of the workers told me that their bread is baked fresh daily at the crack of dawn.

My husband and his family lived in the area when he was 4 years old and to this day his dad and now my husband will drive out on an early Sunday morning to bring back warm Mexican sweet bread. They are always soft, fresh and super yummy. My hubby is excited to make this trip tomorrow morning so he can surprise his dad in the morning. My favorite is the little pig cookie bread. I try to avoid carbs but i do make an exception for these. I honestly cant imagine why anyone would have a bad review for this place it really is amazing.

Hands down best conchas in California. I live in Oakland and every time I come to LA this is a must stop. Anytime family come to visit me from LA les encargo IMA docena conchas. No place in the Bay Area has Mexican bread this good.

I live in Bellflower, and when i go to my mom’s house in ELA, I have to have conchitas!!:) gone twice in the past 3 months. Every time I go, the bread is fresh. Place looks very clean, and the ladies very nice. A lot of variety. Yesterday I happened to call before I went and asked if they could hold some conchitas before they ran out (they sell fast, and they dont make much, so they dont have next day bread). The lady (Maria) was very nice and did hold a dozen for me. Anyways, best bread I have had. And I gave tried. «El pavo» and «La favorita».

The only place to get Mexican sweet bread in east la. I’m super picky, and don’t dare go anywhere else. Best, of all the bread is made with shortening, and olive oil not lard like many traditional Mexican bread. The place has been there for over 50 years an it not called La Fama for nothing!

Pan dulce here always taste fresh and they are open late. My Dad drives from chino to still come here and get some pan dulce once in a while.

Came here by total accident when visiting my tio and Tia in East La. My uncle sent me to the wrong panaderia. Decided to give this place a try anyways. The breads tasted old and bland. My mom got a torta that just looked and tasted gross. Will not be coming back.

Fama in Spanish means fame or reputation, and in this case, with the wonders they do by making their fruit or cream filled empanadas, which would be called pasties or turnovers in English, would enhance the reputation of any self-​respecting panaderia. The interior is spotlessly clean and minimal. That is all that is needed in this great bakery.
Pan Dulce is not my thing since it is too much carbs for me whose belly is ever growing slowly but surely. But I have a weakness for empanadas whether filled with sweets or savory. The meat filled empanadas of Argentine or Filipino fame makes me salivate whenever I think about them.
The pastry that makes up the empanadas at La Fama is a tricky balance of being heavier & bread-​like in texture but also having the lighter texture of cake. Contradictory, but La Fama achieves a good textural compromise that makes for a very appealing mouthfeel. Many empanadas I have eaten at less well-​versed panaderias have pastry that is too dry and hard that crumbles into mouth drying paste. Yuck! The pastry at La Fama is soft, moist, but also has a good bite to it.
The other deal maker is the slow cooked fruit confiture or jam that has a touch of a thickener (pectin?) to give body to the jam. There is a lot of fruit whether they be guayaba (guava), mango, pina (pineapple), manzano (apple), etc. And the jams at La Fama retain their original fruit flavour unlike many of our commercial American jams which if you closed your eyes, you wouldn’t be able to distinguish many of the flavours from each other.
La Fama is an old style panaderia where you first arm yourself with a pair of tongs and a large shield-​like aluminum platter. Go around opening up the refrigerated doors and go «loco» taking whatever you like to make you happy. At least for the empanadas, it is one buck each for a truly well constructed superlative pastry. Buen Provecho!
Also starting around November and ending in January when the cold season arrives, La Fama makes the hot masa (corn mash) and chocolate flavoured Champurado, and Tamales of different fillings like pork in chile colorado sauce, chicken and cheese, cheese and jalapenos, sweet pineapple, etc. Their tamales are excellent and worth the detour.
PS There is a county owned small parking lot across the street, and on hot days, Zacatecas Raspados is just next door. Great one stop shopping for satiating your sweet tooth.

This is not the closest panaderia to my house, but it’s definitely worth the drive. It’s an old-​fashioned kind of bakery where you grab a tray and tongs and pick out your own bread from the display cases. The bread here is always so soft. My favorite thing to get is the pumpkin empanadas and the elotes.

Whats not to love about this bakery. They always have fresh and warm Mexican sweet bread ready for you to tear apart.
Nothing special to the interior of this place. Just trays upon trays of all types of sweet bread. When you enter, there is a table with aluminum plates, and tongs. As you can already tell it is self service. You get to pick out your own sweet bread, and take it to the register once your done filling up your plate. Or you can attempt to make a run for it. But I would not recommend the latter option. You know you thought about it. Crooks!
The prices are extremely on the cheap side. I grab a dozen for $ 7.50. The fact that the sweetbread is always fresh makes it such a bargain.
There is street parking only, but there is always plenty of it.
You gotta try it.

I have never had a Mexican baked good before. On a whim, I drove into this place because the bread looked so freaking delicious while I was stopped at the red light in my car.
Inside, I asked one of the locals what his favorite was. I saw him grabbing six spiral shaped bread, which I realized were «CONCHAS». I bought one and some flaky pastry and some Mexican cornbread.
My experience with the Concha:
It was surprisingly crispy and on the outside but very soft inside. Imagine a sweet yeasty roll, like the ones they serve in those midwest restaurants but with brown sugar on top.

Hell to the yes! This is some authentic East L. A pan dulce. They even have sweet empanadas (apple, mango & guava). It’s like the King Taco equivalent of baked Mexican goods.

My gf is a sweets kinda girl. It’s really charming.
So when she wants her pan dulce, this is where we go.
Her family has been coming to La Fama forever and they all talk with such fondness.
It smelled delicious before we walked in and I was not surprised when I fell in love with this tiny Panaderia once I stepped in. It’s not fancy but there was pan dulce EVERYWHERE!
The first time she brought me there were 3 walls of pan dulce! Sigh!!! Heaven on earth!
On our most recent trip we discovered only 2 walls of pan due to construction. No worries. We pretty much found what we wanted.
Her favorites:
–Piggy bread
–cream filled empanadas
–some other filled pastry round like a ball cut in half with filling in between.
–My favorite:
Sugary elotes. The middle is like a cinnamon-​sugar mix. NOM NOM!
I love that we do not wait to get home to have our pan dulce and when we do get out of the car we have to shimmy and shake to get the sugar off!

At 4:30am we walked by this place. The aroma of fresh bread bitch slapped us. We backed up real quick.
Fresh tamales and bread after a night of drinking 0lde English & Vodka. HELL YES!!!

I’ve been coming to this place for YEARS NOW… and never thought to Unilocal about it but just looked it up and was SHOCKED to see ONLY (1) review and it’s basically about their Tamales.

I’ve had «CONCHA’S» from ALL over California and this place is «HANDS DOWN» the BEST I’ve found in the US.
CONCHA= Is a type of sweetbread
They have a wide variety of Pan that they make fresh several times a day, I just love this place!
