The staff was very helpful and very kind. He was so nice that he even noticed a socket on my brothers electric guitar was off (thus wouldn’t connect to amp) and he free of charge just picked up the squire guitar and fixed it. All in all very unpretentious guitar store. We just came in for strings, picks, and a sling for the guitar and he was very kind throughout the experience. My brother was very happy!

This is a great place. The guy running the joint is very knowledgeable. Smart and experienced. From guitar strings to bass amp to homemade synths from NY. This place has it all. I will be back. Support this shop. It’s more than a store.

Super cool place! The guitars are insane looking and sitting down playing an electric makes me feel like im in a cabin in the woods during the late 60’s aha. I got my tele set up there which wasnt expensive. Intersting place overall and pricing isnt bad cinsidering the uniqueness of everything.

Stopped in again to pick up a shaker. Cute little section of handheld percussion instruments I’ve never noticed before. Looks like Old Style has a fan in me…

Today I went in for the first time and love this great little shop. I can’t play a guitar or any instrument to save my life (The reason I am a photographer) but this is where I’d get a guitar if I had the money for one. Very unique, unusual, one-​of-​a-​kind guitars, Frankenstein-​esque but solid and friendly people too. Support the independent shops!

Just had an acoustic guitar that I purchased on eBay set up here including new strings and it sounds fantastic! Old Style Guitar was recommended by a musician friend and they did not disappoint. Excellent work completed in a timely manner for a price cheaper than most other guitar shops; what more could you ask for? They also have a good selection of guitars (electric and acoustic/​even custom), amps and effects gear. Check this place out.

There are a lot of reasons to love this shop. Personally, I much prefer old used instruments to new ones. Needless to say, I don’t see any good reason to buy a new guitar. Among other considerations, they usually sound pretty uninspiring and soul-​less to me. ANYWAY, you will find plenty of great used instruments here. Everyone is very friendly, helpful, and generally knowledgable. I’d also add that they care very much about creating happy customers. I wasn’t quite happy with a set-​up they did on a guitar and so they told me to bring it back in free of charge. I really appreciate a business that takes pride in their work and/​or product, which is obviously the case at Old Style Guitars.

This place is extraordinary. It’s very unique. I visited Old Style to watch a jam session about a week ago, and was blown away by the quaint space that builds, repairs, and sells guitars. I had no idea what to expect when I walked in the space, but I was pleasantly surprised to see the number of quality instruments displayed throughout the space. They also had a few old school keyboard pieces (Midis, wurlitzers, etc), as well as necessary accessories. It’s the type of shop that any serious musician SHOULD frequent. To think I almost took my bass to Guitar Center for work (not that their work is terrible), but I’m definitely bringing it here now. The man that owns this place truly loves what he does. Major props to him!

So much stuff and so little time! The shop is setup like you’re hanging out in a house with a bunch of quirky antique /​frankenstein instruments. Played a few basses and guitars, bought a crazy cool old marching band bell/​glock, played some crazy Synth they had in the cabinets made out of wood. I want one!

My husband brought 2 bass guitars in to be repaired. He didn’t even know what kind of bass guitars they were, but he needed them fixed. They told him that they were both 60’s japanese bass guitars and very rare and they were excited to help him get them both in working condition, and set up properly. For the quality of work it was pretty fairly priced and now he has 2 working bass guitars. He also raved about the quality of guitars they had in the store, the coffee shop next door and how easy it was to park.

I go back and forth between LA and Boston and I usually travel with my bass. After a while, this causes warping. I’ve taken it more than 3 times to Sam Ash and they just kept making it worse. After coming back from Boston for summer break, I was fed up with Sam Ash and decided to do some research. I came upon this store on Unilocal and I saw that the reviews were very positive. I went in and talked to the owner of the store. He said it would be no problem and only charged me 60 dollars for the work he did on the bass. He not only fixed the warping, but also the intonation. Great deal and great customer service. Overall, very satisfied

Old Style is the most marvelous guitar store I’ve ever explored! Rueben made us feel really welcome in his store, he even opened up on Monday just so we could pop in and have our minds blown by his crazy treasure trove (and pick up a guitar). Its the kind of Guitar store you could imagine existing wayyy back in wild/​mysterious America.
There’s no question about it, I mean, jeez, its just so durn cool!
I hope to it back to old style before jumping on the plane back to New Zealand, man.

Ruben Cox has created one of the great musical experiences in discovering, playing and buying guitar gear from contemporary to eclectic. I can honestly say in my 15 years as a professional musician Old Style is the best, ethical, and inventive shop I have run across. If you care about or have worked years on your sound he and his staff can help you add to the «voice» or «aesthetic» you have worked many years to develop in addition to creating or exploring options/​solutions you may never have thought of. A class guy, a class venture, and always in the process of discovery as a luthier and fan Ruben and Old Style are true treasures.

Reuben and staff are wonderful. Worth every cent. What an art to take neglected vintage instruments and transform them into masterpieces. I’ve taken a number of guitars here and am always impressed with their workmanship. Got some lollars put in my strat and now it sings! The shop is also beautiful and a great hang. no sales push just appreciation for music and instruments. AWESOME

This is a hidden freaking gem of a guitar store! The owner is there and SUPER helpful. Obviously loves guitars and restores them himself. I walked in to buy a capo and left with a capo and a ukelele/​banjo hybrid from the 1920’s. Can’t wait to get home and play! Reasonable price and a guarantee on all the work done. I’ll definitely be coming back. Seriously, check this place out. Support small businesses, especially the really great ones like this!

Old Style is a great indie guitar shop. Entering the door, you feel like you’re taking a trip back in time.
The house-​turned-​shop is full of relics from the music past. Guitars, Basses, Keyboards, Pianos and Organs, some new, some very very old, like 30s acoustics and 40s amps.
Amazing collection.
They sell pretty much everything you need for guitar or bass. Straps, Strings, picks, & more.
They also do repairs on guitars and basses. Not amps though. They’ll refer you to a specialist for that.
Even if you’re broke, go check out the shop. I’m sure they’ll be glad you stopped by.

I had some time to kill on Thursday afternoon in the Silver Lake Neighborhood and I wasn’t hungry, thirsty, or in the walking mood (what else is there really? So I decided to check to see if I could find a cool guitar store. Hell, I would have even gone to guitar center if there was one close, I just wanted to play a little electric bass and hopefully check out some cool instruments.
Anyway, luckily a quick google maps search turned up «Old Style Guitar Shop» (disclaimer: I clarified with Reuben, the owner, and the store is actually just called «Old Style», which, as far as I’m concerned is a great name for any store, especially a guitar store).
Long story short: This is a great store. Although obviously I didn’t look at every instrument, I perused everything they had and every instrument I looked at closely or played was full of character and sounded great. There were a few in particular that I really liked (including one that I would definitely buy if I was in the market for a bass right now or just had lots of expendable cash). Literally, this one I liked sounded as just as warm, interesting, and inspiring to play as my vintage, much more expensive Fender P-​Bass.
Worth a trip. Reuben is a cool shopkeeper as well. They also do setups, repairs, make custom guitars, and put on small evening shows.

Innaresting mom and pop guitar shop. The guy who runs this place seems cool. He’ll chat you up.
Lots of neat-​looking Frankenstein-​style guitars that he makes in the back of the shop. His website says that he’s sold his guitars to bands like Arcade Fire.
They also carry some cheapie Vox practice amps, but not a ton else. I imagine he’ll do repair work on most guitars, too.
They do lots of instore shows, a lot of Matador-​type label acts.

handmade, almost utilitarian designed guitars and bases starting at $ 125 dollars and going up to professional quality, but still affordable instruments!
Reuben is a great guy who has an incredible little shop that all Silver Lake, Los Feliz and Echo Park musicians should know about!
He has strings, and accessories, and does great set up work!
Just yesterday I stopped in for some fret work, and instead of instantly diving for a re-​fret he just buffed two of the frets out. incredible!
If you’re looking for parts for a project, he has a a small selection of all parts stuff on the wall.
His guitars are made from «found woods», then decorated with more aesthetically pleasing woods, and then he installs basic controls and generally vintage pick ups.
The result is a resonant, and classic sounding guitar that is feather –light and incredible original looking.
I’ve been in there three times now, and it’s always been a great experience!
