History

Established in 1999.

Scot Fagerland has been a professional educator since 1996. Starting out as a community college math instructor, he began tutoring math on the side in 1999. He began tutoring the LSAT in 2001 while a law student. His math students began asking for help with physics. That led eventually to chemistry, then biology. SAT and LSAT led to GRE and GMAT. He is now experienced in virtually all major academic subjects and exams.

Scot has been making house calls in Westside LA since 2001. He became the at-home tutor of choice for some of LA’s most rich and famous clientele. He has had office space since 2005, including the current office since 2014. While in Koreatown, 2009 — ’14, he created the business name «Nth Degree» and established an online presence. Since 2014, Nth Degree has seen the growth of GRE classes, after-school walk-in hours, and YouTube lecture videos.

Hi everyone, I’m Scot, the one and only tutor at Nth Degree. I taught college math from 1996 — 2013, with a year or two of high school instruction along the way. In the 2000s at SMC, I began garnering excellent online reviews and became a highly sought-after instructor. While nice for my personal satisfaction, that did nothing for my job prospects. I decided that my tutoring practice was the best way to take advantage of this recognition. I have been entirely self-employed since 2013. I briefly experimented with hiring staff tutors and found this to go against the grain of my business values. I know that agencies can make a ton of money by hiring out tutors en masse. But when a satisfied client refers me to a friend, the new client is expecting my personal experience and style. I know math and science curriculum from the inside. I have scored at the 99^th percentile on many standardized exams and have been accepted to several top universities, and can help you do the same!

I attended the six-week GRE course offered this past spring. The class met every Saturday from noon-3pm. I had never studied for or taken the GRE so I was starting from scratch, and I have Scot to thank for my score that far exceeded my expectations.
Scot was able to identify the key sections of the test that could swing scores. He carefully walked through the information and supplied tips that came in handy during testing. If the group was unable to understand a certain concept or problem, Scot took the time to present the solution in various ways, guaranteeing that each person would understand. He was able to provide that individual attention that is crucial in test prep. I never felt that of my concerns or challenges with the material were ignored.
He also makes it comfortable for all his students with snacks and supplies! I never felt that the class dragged on or went too long.
More importantly, Scot boosted my confidence going into the test. By going through not only practice problems but the mechanics of the test, I was more than prepared. I improved my verbal score by 13 points and my math score by 3 points. My score was high enough that I will not have to take it again. Phew!

If you’ve decided to go the route of professional test prep, as with anything else you’re faced with a bevvy of choices. In this case, there are private tutors, specialized centers, test prep conglomerates, etc. You might even find yourself on Unilocal sifting through offerings that, based on their high star ratings, seem equally compelling.
Let me help make the process easier: Give Scot a call. I did so earlier this year when preparing for the GRE, for which I needed a comprehensive review with a focus on math problems. After an initial 15-minute consultation, Scot and I agreed on a plan of attack.
I met Scot in his office for 4 straight weeks, and his approach to GRE prep is a thing of beauty for its simplicity. I took practice tests in my free time and, together, we went through the problems one by one. No fancy gimmicks or methodologies. Just a student, a teacher, a whiteboard and valuable lessons that you’ll carry with you to test day.
As for results: Scot propelled me to exceed the scores I needed for my target grad programs (from my initial practice test benchmark, he raised my score in each section by 7 points). There’s no doubt in my mind that the concepts he imparted contributed directly to this, especially on the math section, where his lessons saved time and added valuable points to my score.

I both attended the GRE class, and did individual tutoring with Scot to raise my GRE math score. I had previously looked into similar services through Princeton Review, but found it was way too expensive. Not only was Nth Degree much more affordable, it was also much more effective! I had taken a Princeton Review SAT course in high school and saw no improvement to my score. However, I took the GRE yesterday after working with Scot for a few months and saw major improvements! I jumped 11 points in math (my main area of focus) and 3 points in the verbal section. I know I couldn’t have done that on my own. If you are struggling with the GRE, Nth Degree is absolutely the best way to go!

I attended the GRE tutoring class here and it was extremely helpful! I enrolled in this class for the 6 weeks prior to my 3^rd attempt of the torturous exam. At first, I chose this class because of the GREAT PRICE! (And great Unilocal reviews). But after completing this course, I can confidently say it was the best decision I ever made. First, I should say– Me and the GRE do not get along. I hated the entire process. Scot really helped me to change my attitude ever so slightly, so I could focus more on the material rather than my hatred and improve my score :)
I was most worried about the math section, although the reading and essay portions are most important for my major (speech-language pathology). We focused on each of the sections equally pretty much, and after the 6 weeks I felt SO much more prepared than I ever had the previous 2 times I took the GRE. I ended up raising my math score by 11 points! My essay score raised by 1.5 points! And my reading score raised 2 points, but it was the perfect amount because it was all of the scores I needed!
Now, obviously I can’t give this tutoring class all of the credit. I did A LOT of studying on my own as well. BUT– I can give the class all of the credit for motivating me to actually work and try my hardest. I can also give credit to Scot for really taking the time to teach many concepts that I wouldn’t have grasped as well on my own. For example, there are some math concepts I just do not remember from High School, and there’s only so much I can grasp from reading the steps in a textbook. I am a very hands-on visual learner. So I found it extremely helpful to have someone there to walk me through the steps, multiple times with help and on my own. Also, in the past I had never studied for the essay portion of the test, I just didn’t know how. Scot was very helpful in this area because he provided a lot of tips about organization and key words, and he explained the grading process. This helped me a lot because I knew exactly what I needed to write and how to write it, regardless of the topic.
Lastly, the small setting of the class is AWESOME! There was only 3 people in my class (which is the minimum by the way). This was great for me because I felt like I was in a comfortable environment to ask questions freely and make mistakes. Scot was able to teach the class based on each of our levels and areas that we needed help with. In comparison, if the class consisted of 20 people with 20 vastly different academic levels, it wouldn’t cater to each individual as much. Also, when one person doesn’t come to class one week (or 2 people– like happened to me once)… You have a whole class that is one-on-one! That’s three hours with just you and the teacher, able to focus on specifically your needs!
Overall, I would recommend this tutoring class/company to anyone and everyone! I had amazing results after coming here, compared to when I took the test and did not use this tutoring class.
Now my next step– get accepted into grad school! Keeping my fingers crossed! But hopefully my score increase on the GRE will help me :)

Nth Degree Tutoring saved 11^th grade for me with respect to my AP calculus and AP chemistry classes. Scot is brilliant and has a way to explain the subject matter with in calculus or chemistry so that I understand the concepts. He helped me understand calculus in a whole new light, helping me memorize the things I need to know with little tricks and rules. With the amount of time I spend with him, he is reasonably priced. I wouldn’t recommend any other tutor but him. I am sure his tutoring will give me an edge with college admissions both on the ACT and with better grades.

This message is for anyone who is taking or re-taking the California First-Year Law Students Examination (FYLSE) aka ‘Baby Bar’. Stop struggling and do yourself some good and contact Nth Degree Tutoring!
I used Scott’s help when I took the exam for the second time, on the advice of a friend. I was so glad that I took that advice, because Scott was infinitely helpful, he was able to tell me what to focus on, how to study, and what mattered (and what didn’t).
Scott was calm, rational and quickly responded to questions I had as I went through the study materials and helped with breaking down key concepts. His approach to studying was exactly what I needed; I work full-time so I had a hard time managing my study hours, his flexible availability (after work & weekends) and house calls made my studying a manageable and affordable process.
The value of his assistance throughout the process was pretty much invaluable. Scott believed in me when I doubted myself and helped me understand that the exam IS passable, if you study right. If I could give him six stars, I would! When I was faced with replacing a math tutor who had been teaching my daughter for two years, I didn’t think it would be possible to find someone as wonderful… say hello to Scot. He is amazing on all levels, but the ability to engage a 15 year old girl in the «fun» that is geometry is mind-boggling. He gives her the tools to be capable and confident. Who could ask for anything more? Not a lot of free time on his schedule, so I would advise to book him when you can… like…NOW!

I am currently preparing for GRE, and have been out of of mathematic circulation for decades.

I have taken Scott’s GRE Test Prep course, and he is very solid for all sections of the test. He gives a handout at the beginning of the course that breaks down the different skills needed to excel on the test, it has been very handy for me. The class size is small, so emphasis is given to each student. He was also very honest too, refunding money for a class allocated to the math section because he knew I had no issues with it.

As a «returning» student applying to law school and preparing for the LSAT, I was really concerned about my test taking skills. I am taking the LSAT prep course with Scot. I was having trouble with logical games before, and was very delighted to learn how to solve it with Scot. In addition, I was very surprised to find out that Scot has a law degree from UCLA and I hope he can be my tutor for Bar exam too. I am not a native English speaker, so having a tutor who explains everything step by step is vital for me. i had tried a Kaplan course before, and I have to say it was like a «fast food» to me, everything was too fast and tutor never explained anything slowly or twice.

I took the GRE prep course it was very useful. Scot focused on covering the whole material of the GRE and provided us with extra materials to enhance the verbal, math and writing sections. My math improved by 14 points. The classroom had six students which gave scot the time to focus on each one and answer any question.

I sought out Nth Degree for help with GRE math prep, and was very impressed by Scot’s expertise not only with the test content but with strategies for how to teach the skills.
