LA Sands Boxing Gym

Pretty sure this place is closed– looked for it the other day and asked nearby businesses. They all stated it is no longer get there.

Really cool ‘old school’ type boxing gym
Coach Sands is very softly spoken but always has time for you. I actually found myself doing some old school boxing drills and by the end of the month was in the best shape i had been in for a long time with some disciplined training and diet.
The gym doesn’t run ‘classes’ but it just just comes down to getting as much out of it as you put in — and this applies to those experienced and those as beginners.
Old school gyms have an expectation of this — train hard and you will be guided in the right direction rather than be given all the answers.
All the equipment was great and some active sparing for those experienced and generally guys kept themselves in check and on level.
Overall great gym — gave me some internal motivation to take some responsibility for my own training and really same some benefits to this.

I love this gym. It’s the best boxing gym in DTLA, the equipment is well maintained. and they’re open 6 days a week.

I think this place might be closed. I’ve tried calling a couple of times and there is no answer. The website is under construction and the email address on the site got my message returned. It too bad because I was hoping to workout here on my upcoming trip to downtown L.A.

Real deal. If you really want to learn how to box and not just get a work out this is the place to go.

I recently visited Sands with the sole intention to sign up.
I was quoted a price of $ 75/​month to use the gym or $ 100/​month to use the gym and be trained.
I opted to pay the $ 10 day use fee to check out the gym first, just to be sure.
Sam had me jump rope, shadow box, work the bags etc.
All a great workout. The gym atmosphere and equipment is exactly what a good gym should be.
However, during my workout I swore I overheard him quote other people $ 40/​month (gym use) $ 75/​month (gym use and training) on 2 separate occasions. Which I found odd that I would have been quoted a higher price.
Having trained Muay Thai, I know my way around a striking gym but I’m no expert and was intending to sign up to improve my boxing techniques.
However, I didn’t receive any feed back, instruction or communication as to whether I was doing anything correctly or incorrectly.
Even when I was clueless on the speed bag & double end bag no feedback or instruction was given.
After my workout I decided to watch the members spar.
10 or so rounds went by and the members received little to no instruction in between rounds or during. The members seemed nice and it seemed like ego’s were all checked at the door. The place had a good vibe.
However, having not been given any instruction or even seen anyone else receive any left me wondering what I would gain in signing up here.
Its possible I mis-​heard Sam quote others lower prices, but I am pretty certain my ears did not deceive me.
Overall, receiving some instruction would have made all the difference to me.
Afterall, I can hit the bag and use a ring at Golds for $ 40/​month.
That was my experience, check Sands out, your milage may vary.

I checked out a lot of other boxing gyms before going with LA Sands. My goal was to learn how to box and to get to a point of actually fighting (maybe not pro of course, but I would like to give thing a bit of a run, even with my 36-​yr-​old body). I wasn’t looking for the shiniest or the most expensive gym, I was looking for the best gym to learn the sport… And that’s what I believe LA Sands to be.
Like another Unilocaler stated, it is very Rocky-​esque. The prices are great, the workout is great and I believe the training is great as well. I have been training here for the last 4 months about 3 times per week and I sparred for the first time earlier today (which was awesome).
If you want to spend more money and maybe meet girls or be able to get a Starbucks next door, don’t train here. But, if you want to learn how to box, workout hard and learn from a fighter, then I fully recommend LA Sands to anyone — male or female.

The real deal!!! Amazing gym, great equipment, and a hardcore atmosphere. You can find professional boxers to little kids learning to throw their first punches here. Full size ring and multiple bags. You feel like you’re in an old school boxing gym in New York.

I loveeee this boxing gym. Mr. Sands is such a nice guy and a great instructor. I’ve been going here for a few weeks and its great. everybody is nice and Mr. Sands pushes you to the limit and shows you your full potenial

This is an old school type of boxing gym. Price is good, plenty of bags, people there are cool, and training environment is awesome.

I’ve been going to LA Sands Boxing gym the past 5 weeks. And its been great! I lost 8lbs in 5 weeks and I am in optimal shape (like when I was in high school). I also learned basic boxing fundamentals like proper stance, how to move, throw a jab, cross, hook, and how to hit the heavy bag and speed bags. To top it off, Mr. Sands is a really nice and approachable guy — if u have any questions, just ask.
Pros: high-​quality instruction, great equipment (has the bags you need), great rates ($ 65/​month or $ 5-​$ 10 daily workout with instruction), large training area to accomodate people.
Cons: not many besides the fact that if your not used to downtown LA, the surrounding area isn’t the greatest location.
So if ur wanting to learn how to box and get fit and build your self-​confidence at an affordable price, give LA Sands boxing a try. You might end up liking it!

What a gem this place is! Very Rocky-​esque. Plenty of bags, room to jump rope, lots of mirrors. Sands is such a nice guy! Taught me some great combos with the mitts. $ 40/​month, or $ 65 including training, or $ 5 for the day. It’s a steal!
