Knit Culture Studio

I have been to this store dozens of times and have spent a great deal of money there. Mostly I have gone here out of convenience, but also because they do have a lovely selection of yarns and a decent stock of essential supplies. It feels like being a kid in a candy store with all the beautiful yarn, and I usually feel inspired to finish ongoing projects so I can start new ones.
And while they do have «frequent knitter» cards, you can only use them if you spend another $ 100 at one time – probably works if you tend to do big projects. But don’t expect to reap any discounts if you tend to make lots of small projects. However, they do have a couple of sales a year, so it’s worth it to watch for those.
The drawback with the store is the atmosphere, which stems largely from the owner herself – she comes across as grumpy and unhappy much of the time, and her attitude can dampen the experience. The two one-​star reviews here describe experiences I could very well imagine, and are not far from what I have seen myself. Last time I visited she forbid us to take any photos, claiming that we might try to «copy her store» or steal their patterns, which would be an absurd amount of trouble compared to just buying the pattern. We were rather put off, and did not feel particularly welcome or appreciated for our business. It’s unfortunate that she is so often negative and unfriendly, and the store would be a real gem if she just adopted a better attitude of cheer and appreciation towards her customers. On the positive side, the owner is a very knowledgeable and experienced knitter, and if you can get her attention she can be really helpful.
The other staff are usually great and can be very knowledgeable and helpful, and in fact are often *more* helpful and engaging when the owner is not there.
It’s definitely worth stopping into the store to see what wonderful yarns are available today. It’s not the fun kind of shop where knitters love to hang out all day, unfortunately, and the parking in the area makes it a challenge to get there. But for supplies and ideas, it’s a decent resource.

Quite nice yarn! But very expensive! One skein of cascade 220 sport for 136 yards is $ 6.75! Loved my experience! They welcome both crocheters and knitters! I also got a crochet mouse pattern and sheep pattern! Service was wonderful!!! I would love to come back.

Lovely yarn shop! Owner is very friendly. The yarns are displayed beautifully. All natural fibers. Nice book selection. As a visitor to anyplace I always Unilocal knitting shops and support local yarn shops if the owner is welcoming and the yarn /​patterns interesting. I didn’t need any more yarn but left with a wonderful scarf pattern, 4 skeins of alpaca, needles and fun words of wisdom buttons. She had notions, knitting bags and cards I have not seen back east. I’m glad I went.

I recently had a great experience with Knit Culture Studio. I needed to get some yarn ASAP for a project that I was working on, but I couldn’t come into the store.
I called them to see what they had that I could use, and they recommended some good yarns, and then recommended that I go to their website so I could see exactly what the colors looked like and how many skeins they had in stock. Their website was super easy-​to-​use.
I called them back and bought the yarn I wanted. They wound it while waiting for someone that I hired on TaskRabbit to go pick it up.
The things I was especially impressed with were that the people that answered the phone were knowledgeable about the yarn I wanted, and recommended a very good substitute when they didn’t have it. They were also fast, friendly, and helpful and basically helped me get yarn delivered to my door.
I look forward to coming into the store!

Seems like all the «one star» customer review seems to be pending. And the low rated reviews seem to all have comments and excuses on them. Agree with most of the reviewers a lot of good selection of yarn. Pretty expensive but good quailty. But their customer service is just bad. Every visit was poor customer service. Tried one last time. I dont think ill be going back to spend money on bad customer service.

Id like to give this place 3 stars for their beautiful yarn selection and convenience to my home.
However I was extremely irritated by an experience I’ve recently encountered. I had never bought yarn that was «on sale» here before and a lady working there recommended it for the type of yarn color/​weight that I was looking for. Keep in mind I never spend less than $ 100 here every time as the yarn is so expensive. This trip was no exception. I took the yarn home and the yarn I purchased wasn’t going to work at all with the project I was putting together. So i thought to take the yarn back and EXCHANGE it for something that would. The lady informed me that they didn’t take exchanges or refunded «sale» yarn. WHAT!!! When I told her that I wasn’t aware of that when I purchased them she stated that its on the receipt and their «policy» so NO exceptions! WTF!!! If I had known I wouldn’t have purchased them in the first place! Maybe you should have your «policy» posted up other than your receipt after its too late to do anything about it!!! Ugh! I will make an effort to drive elsewhere for any of my future project purchases

Rude. Not welcoming. Quick to judge. I went in with interest. They were not interested in me. I guess I didn’t look like a serious customer. Regardless her poor attitude cost for future referrals.

I got serious help on my knitting recently thanks to Fleming’s awesome advice, she showed me my mistakes and helped me with my projects in a special Sunday «fix it» class. Beautiful store with beautiful yarn. Big thumbs up, I’ll be visiting often! Additionally, one of the more unusual things this LYS has to offer is that they sell yarn online and the website is super easy to navigate.

I recently visited LA from out of town and did a mini-​yarn crawl and visited this store while making the rounds.
Its located on a super busy street, if you are not familiar with LA traffic, parking for this store can be daunting. I ended up going past it, and making a U-​turn and nabbing a spot in front of the restaurants a few shops away. However, that was a nice bit of parking karma. Just be patient as you try to deal with it all.
Its definitely a store worth the trouble though, they have a gorgeous selection of yarns and the store is just very very pretty for a knitter. They arrange everything by color (and size) which is a lovely way to display everything. I could immediately go to a color way I was interested in and see the range of options very easily, instead of roaming forever trying to figure something out.
The staff were super friendly, and I could tell they were seasoned knitters with a skill set that was awesome. I didn’t need any help, as I was just browsing and they kindly left me alone, which I appreciated.
They have a small community seating area in the back under a wonderful skylight so you can see all your knitting, but I saw a bigger area through the door where they must do fun things too. Not sure if they do anything there though.
If I lived in LA I would definitely have this be a regular stop !!

While visiting LA, I went into Knit Culture to research yarn for an afghan to knit. Not only were they so helpful, they also had fabulous yarn and suggestions. The knit shops where I live are so very disappointing…

This shop is cozy, fun, helpful, full of superior yarns and organized by color which can be helpful if you want to see all possible color ways in say cream before starting your project. I found the staff very helpful, unlike some other reviews. They wanted to get any yarns for me, offered to show me where some of my favorites were and pointed out the locations of my requested brands/​yarn blends and even placed my selections up at the counter so I didn’t have to carry them. This store is for the yarn elites. All of the best, yummiest, hand-​dyed brands are here; from Lorna’s Laces (which can be super hard to find in LA), to Blue Sky Alpacas, Madeline Tosh, Dream in Color and Plymouth Alpacas to even a full assortment of Cascade yarns (Superwash 128, 220 and 220 paints). They even offered to order colors they didn’t have. Their yarns are expensive because you’re paying for quality yarn. In actuality, I have only found their prices to be from $ 0.50 to $ 1.50 more expensive than the yarn stores that carry the same brands I used to frequent in Portland, so I feel like I’m paying for convenience. I asked about group knit nights and they don’t have them anymore for multiple reasons, but there are plenty of knitting groups in the LA area and on
if that’s what you’re looking for. Knit Culture has great clearance events too for those of us who like to have healthy stash piles for, well, some project in the future, at a bargain price. Loving their Spud and Chloe one skein project mugs too! Such a great gift idea! For $ 25 you get one skein of yummy Spud and Chloe Sweater, a pattern for a relatively easy beginner project and and huge mug to sip your favorite tea or coffee drink out of while you create your masterpiece. I have been so happy that I stumbled upon Knit Culture Studios because I love my designer yummy yarns that are nice to my fingers and people love wearing for years.

Stopped in here after a meeting of the Greater Los Angeles Spinning Guild. I’m glad that I did.
When I walked through the door, I was immediately greeted with a smile and a friendly hello by a woman who was sitting at a table working on a knitting project. I asked if they had anything that I couldn’t get at my local knitting store or anything made by local artisans. After hearing that I normally shop in South Orange County, she immediately walked to the shelves and handed me a skein of beautiful yarn.
The store is organized by color, so she indicated that I could find other colorways located throughout the shop. I wandered around, looking for different color ways, found about 6 but the first one was the most beautiful. It’s sort of the colors of summer: cobalt blue, turquoise blue, white yellow, orange, and burnt orange.
I also spied intriguing yarn on the back wall. There were about 20 skeins of brightly colored yarn. Ten skeins were two-​ply wool, one thick ply and one thin. it gave the wool a lot of texture. each had a contrasting skein of mohair. when I expressed interest in the yarn, the woman went into the back and got a shawl showcasing the wool. It was really lovely.
Based on the plentiful inventory of the store, the availability of unique yarns, and the friendly, helpfulness of the service, I highly recommend Knit Culture.
1 additional perk is that they are located next to Fonuts which serves great coffee and donuts.

I love this store. Seriously the best selection I’ve seen in ages. They carry most of my favorite yarns and always have them in stock. Especially Lorna’s laces. Ummm, WHY is Lorna’s so damn hard to find?
I dock one star for the sometimes snobby you-can’t-sit-with-us air about the place sometimes, and the outrageous prices. 6 skeins for a project left me broke as a joke the last time I went in.

The only place I could find in the area that sells crochet hooks. And the pickings are slim in the midtown area, everyone is knitting snobby. And the hooks were awesome clover ones. So I was very happy. The addi hook that I bought was kinda terrible.
There are tons of beautiful yarns here, but since I’m hell bent on finishing up some of my stash, and because the yarns looked mighty pricey, I restrained myself. The people working there were super nice in matching up some yarn I had and it ended up being just perfect.
Metered street parking. Which is usually easy to find in this area but the traffic was so bad it made me nauseous. Avoid rush hour, you barely move a block in 5 minutes.

The owner of this show does not deserve your business!
The girls that work there are wonderful and the yarn selection, although high priced, is very good. I’ve come there many times and spent a LOT of money. I keep trying to overlook the petty, short-​sighted customer service but I can no longer do this. I have had at least 3 run-​ins of very poor service where she is desperate to hang onto every dime.

I was there a few days ago and bought a yarn. I went back today to pick up my wound balls. I saw the SAME yarn I bought the day before in the Sale bin (35% off) and it had a red mark on the tag even. She said it was «mistakenly put in there» and not on sale. I said it has a red mark on the tag. She again insisted it was a mistake, so she wouldn’t have to refund me!
I drove in an hour to the shop to have one of the designers help me with a project that I got stuck on that she had created. The shop owner gave her an evil eye look and said, «10 minutes!» when she came out to help me. I was so taken back that I could not even concentrate, while the owner peered on. I got the drift that I was mooching time away. Yet I had bought all of this and much more, from this shop! I’ll scrap the project or somehow figure it out online, rather than have this negative attitude at me. I was nothing but nice too! The designer was a sweetheart, but this was so uncomfortable!
One day I bought a good size order. Just after, I recalled that I had the 10% coupon from their site (which they always have). The owner refused to give me the discount! Said I had to do it before the purchase. I even offered to have the money applied to the next purchase. She refused!
Yesterday I saw a lady come in and want to return or exchange knitting needles. She was told once something leaves the store they can’t possibly take it back (like the product has cooties now or something). It was said very condescending. They people walked away very taken back. It would have been so easy to even offer store credit, but this woman won’t budge!
I really tried to overlook the petty issues that I have seen often when I come there and look at the good in people. Especially the staff there. But I just can’t sit back and not let it be known what I personally experienced. Go elsewhere! There are so many nice shops where knitters can enjoy the comfortable environment.

Walking in to this store, I could feel my pupils dilating, it’s like crocheter/​knitters porn heaven (or hell, depending on how you look at it).
For the most part this place is arranged by color, which is helpful but also mind boggling. It’s great to have so much to choose from but oh so hard to choose!
I stopped in just to check it out, the staff was friendly, everything is neat and appealing to the eye AND THEY HAVE AN ADORABLE DACHSHUND! If I didn’t want to go back to spend all my money on yarn, I’d want to go back just to pet the cute doggy.
And if the idea of knitting/​crocheting doesn’t sound sexy to you… go check out the knitted or crocheted (I didnt get close enough to check) lingerie ensemble they have in the window and think again! Yowza!

This is such a cute LYS (local yarn shop). I didn’t buy anything, but went in to browse all the yarns because I was in the neighborhood.
In the front window of the shop, they have two sweaters featuring patterns by tiny owl knits by Stephanie Dosen, an American living in London. I’ve been a huge fan of her patterns and loved seeing the sweaters all knit up in person, rather than in pictures on Ravelry! The «oh my bear» sweater was knit with a hood and little ears, and was just so adorable.
The yarns are organized by color, which made it visually very appealing. I think organizing by colors versus yarn weight makes it more difficult to pick colors for projects, but that’s just a preference.
The second room has notions and a small (seats 3) seating area to sit and knit! Even the sofas are colorful, so it’s hard to not feel kind of happy.
The prices are higher than my LYS (Nine Rubies Knitting in San Mateo, CA) but it’s a charming shop, and the next time I’m in town, I’ll be here again to browse and hopefully buy some yarn. Lucky for me that my best friend just moved to the hood!

They have a shop dachshund. What else do you need to know? Five stars.

I was a little hesitant to come to a knitting store only because I’m still learning, but I am SO GLAD I stopped by! My experience couldn’t have been better. When I was struggling which yarn to buy, Leah was very sweet and helpful. She even looked up my pattern online and helped me choose a new circular needle for me.
I will definitely be back for more!

An old fave. I used to live down the street and this was my usual Sunday knitting shop. Not a lot of yarn shops are open on Sundays, if you haven’t noticed. So to find one in the neighborhood is a blessing. I’m one of those yarn shop rats that likes to sit and knit and ot necessarily buy on every trip to the yarn shop so the community that collects in the yarn shop is usually a big reason I go. You learn things from knitting with strangers! It took me a little while to warm up to this place because it’s small and most people don’t stay to knit. But on Sundays, it actually turned out to be perfect because it’s quiet and meditative. And sometimes I just need to be NEAR the yarn. Eventually I got to know the girls that work in the store and we’d keep each other company when there wasn’t a lot of traffic.
Sorry, I’m rambling now. My Unilocaling skills have taken a nose-​dive since I haven’t been on for a while.
The highlights (in no particular order):
1. open on Sunday
2. good selection, especially on Koigu
3. all the yarn is arranged by color, making shopping for a project very fun
4. knowledgeable, friendly owner/​staff
5. Cool classes! They get some celebrity designers, like Jared Flood, who taught an amazing Fair Isle class there last year.

Very nice shop. Beautiful yarns and colors. They have a wide variety of fabrics too. It’s kind of pricey so I’m looking forward for a sale to stock up more. Friendly staff too.
Parking is on the street. Either close by at a meter or a little further away if you park in the neighborhood. Look at the signs to make sure that you are parking at the right time!
I’ll be frequenting this place during my knitting phase for sure. :-)
