Kim’s Jewelers

Kim, his wife and his brother-​in-​law do excellent work for a fair price. Their little stall is always filled with a steady stream of professional jewelry sellers going in for repairs. They do very good laser welding and are also excellent at stringing beads. I highly recommend them.

My Mother broke one of her strands of pearls.
Being the OCD that I am, I went to the Jewelry mart and interviewed the people stringing pearls. I got price quotes and watched them work. I love the jewelry mart and could spend all day there. I am deeply impressed with people who work with their hands and do it with an artistic flair.
Kim is the husband. Muyim is the wife. Because I love my mother, and I knew how important these pearls are to her, I asked each jeweler If I could stay while they were being restrung. The people I felt best about were Muyim and Kim Ung. I arranged for a day when I had the day off and arrived at opening time. July 3 2009. I brought a lecture on my IPod which I needed to listen to.
Muyim’s children were there. If you know the Jewelry mart, the booths are pretty small. The daughter was perhaps 6 and the son was about 4.
Miyum put her daughter to work cutting the pearls from their string, with a pair of small scissors. Each pearl was placed on a tray set up for beading. None were lost.
Then Miyum strung the string of perhaps 4 stands of silk thread through all the pearls. I was worried this would be like a string of beads with the pearls all sliding around, but Miyum tied a knot between each pearl. This is an art. Here’s a link to a quick UTube of one way to do it:
Somehow she more-​or-​less would fling the growing strand of pearls in the air and the string around her hand would cinch up. I can liken this to a Pizza cook tossing the crust.
The final cost to restring two strands of pearls, each one about 80 beads (4mm pearls) was $ 20. It took about 3 hours but some of that time the Kim;s were helping other customers. I gave their daughter an extra $ 10 for working so carefully.
I wasdeeply touched by their care and attention to detail. I would go there again.
