Lots of side dishes and fresh sashimi and sushi. Not the best presentation, but for a no frill seafood dinner with soju or beer, this place is very homey and provides great service even at the busiest times.

Come here if you like seafood Korean style. My friend took me here and we got the sashimi combo. It comes with so much stuff! Please see pictures as I don’t know the names of some of them lol $ 70 for 3 people was enough and we were left stuffed & pregnant looking.

Omg the amount of raw fish I ate today should be a sin… I came as a party of 4, and we got combination C(for 4 people) + live octopus + sea cucumber. This was plentyyyy for us! The fish was all so so fresh and the service was unbeatable. The service was kind of slow, especially because it was a full house, but our waitress gave us a free bottle of soju and a free bottle of beer, as well as free hwaedopbab, because we had to wait on the servers a lot. I didn’t expect that at all, especially since waiting on koreatown servers is the norm, but that was so kind of her! I usually frequent T=Fish, but I’ll definitely be coming here from now on :)

Hae Deop Bab heaven. Think a Korean and imo better version of a Chirashi bowl. Just get it. This is part 1 of my many parts LA Ktown secrets. This review may be a little skewed because: 1. Seafood and sashimi is my oxygen 2. I haven’t had decent Korean food in a long time Come for the lunch special and it’s ridiculously cheap at $ 7.99. Come for dinner and its $ 15, but still worth it. Generous sashimi portions in a bowl larger than my face and of course your standard, but simple Korean side dishes and a miso soup to boot. Standard Korean service, but I’m sure being Korean helps my experience here. If you aren’t Korean the language barrier here could definitely frustrate a customer. Just be courteous and decisive and your experience should be fine. This ain’t a Michelin starred restaurant with a maitre’d so calm yourself. This ish is stupid cheap and delicious.

I love sushi and sashimi, so when I heard about this Korean sashimi place, I begged slave girl and anyone who speaks Korean to go with me. After a long time of crying and kicking, I finally got enough people to adventure out to the spot. We got combo sashimi d with 6 people in our party. The combo was only for 5 people but they were really nice about it. No extra charge and just all around pleasant experience. What I love about the pre-set course is you don’t have to pick from a huge menu. They will bring you whatever and you just sit and eat. If you find something you love, go for the single item in the future of course. The highlight of the menu was live octopus and lobster sashimi. Don’t get me wrong, the clam and mussel broth was one of the best I’ve ever tasted, but you just don’t see those two items on regular basis. The service was not amazing but if you need something, just ask. The restaurant is pretty small and they couldn’t really hide from you. Overall, I enjoyed the experience and I like the food a lot. I can’t wait to go back.

Came with wife, after looking at sushi and uni places, this is wifes account. I am Korean, 47, and avid sushi and sashimi enjoyer. First time here and the last. I know the owners do not work on Sunday night but more then apparent here. Food and banchan were below par. Spent $ 100 in an hour and dis not enjoy any part if the experience, nor did i want to waste any more time. First thing we asked was if they had live uni. And they did not, and we showed our disappointment. We ended up ordering combo A $ 80. And soju $ 10. Combo A, not much of ban chan. And the rice porridge was too watery and not hot enough. Mind you a slow Sunday night, close to 9. Small place 10 table max with only 2 other tables who left with in 20 min. I fond the 2 waitress starting to drink on a table next to us about 915. We Called to check, and closes at 10. They seem not to care about when we got our food. And finally asked where the uni was. The waitress says that it has to be order for more the 5. WHiCH is shit. Never heard or been served that way. And suggest we order uni on the side. And u asked if they had any O Toro but no on that. I asked for check and they told me that there is spicy soup; what the hell were they waiting for? But i took it home. I eat everything. Does not mean i love it all. I have no idea how this place has 4 stars, go to wa sa da on western across from Omc. Last time they ran out of uni. But still much better. If u r the owner then pay more attention to new customer. I can tell our waitress had long experience. by the way she did not let my attitude or situation bother her. Only means she could care less. Not that she was good. Go to Wasada orNishi sushi or ken wa fir banchan Good luck. I work for my money and i like to enjoy a $ 100 dinner experience. Wife; i agree with my hubby. So disappointed. We did not enjoy foods are not great. And the worse thing is we were still eating and there were 2 waitresses came and sat on the next table and drink beer. … Just a little respect, cant they wait after we leave? Dont go eat there. You wont gonna be happy. Really!!!

Eating Hwae is an authentic Korean experience. I have great memories of eating it in the past. Unfortunately I didn’t get that here. To be fair though, their entire seafood was served fresh and cleanly prepared. Their noorungee was good too. But everything else, the«banchan» and other numerous dishes that came out in between the beginning and the main dish– which is for me at least, what makes Korean hwae dining an experience, was subpar and absolutely lackluster. Their jjigae was horrid. Come on guys, it’s jjigae!!! Also it would have been nice if they put the mussel soup on a sterno. Had to constantly ask waiter to re-heat. The seasonings on the banchans were too bland. I caught myself recanting throughout dinner of the non-seafood dishes, «terrible.» The price of our full course was not cheap either. For the 3 of us, it was nearly 170 bucks with tip with a bottle of soju. Definitely not worth the price.

Delish hae do bap. $ 8 for lunch. from their lunch special items, the hae do bap is the only thing worth getting. Small parking lot. Parking is not easy to find. California roll is $ 8 and comparable to $ 5 rolls elsewhere. Udon is $ 8 and it’s really just udon noodles in a broth. No tempura, nothing else in it. It’s not really worth it.

Sashimi Combo C for 4 people is probably enough food for 5 – 6 people. The highlight of the dinner was fresh lobster sashimi, and the head and claws are used later for the spicy seafood soup. The only downside is if the group doesn’t eat sea squirt, sea cucumber, and other non-traditional sashimi seafood, there’s a lot of food wasted. Also, some of the seafood didn’t seem super fresh(uni in the box, oysters were too briny for my liking). I wished there was less of this stuff and more of the typical fishes(halibut, tuna, salmon, yellowtail), which were sweet and cut to ideal thickness. The restaurant is pretty small, maybe about twelve 4-person tables and service was WAY above average considering there are 3 waitresses for a packed restaurant on a Saturday night. We were celebrating a birthday and the sushi chefs made a special bday roll! Come early because there are no reservations and the dinner can take a while with all the different courses. There are probably about 15 different plates that come out!

Only came here to try the live octopus for the experience but don’t think I’ll ever have it again, maybe except if and when I have kids and if and when they want it. They claim their live octopus is seasonal and it happened to be $ 25 when my bf and I went; however, I think this can definitely be negotiated since the cashier tried to charge us $ 30 for the octopus — we had to call our waitress to confirm the price. FOOD l 2 — Octopus came with salt & sesame oil and go chu jang as dipping sauce. Nothing special about this, just taste like octopus with sauce — I guess it’s cool because it’s still crawling and moving when you eat it. — We didn’t try any other dishes on the menu but it seemed over priced, at least compared to other korean restaurants in the area. SERVICE l 1 Service is poor. You come in, you order, you get your drinks and food, then your check — don’t really expect anything else in between. PROs: — live octopus — the chef literally fishes the octopus from the tank and places it in a plate for you to take pictures and videos of CONs: — poor service — chopped live octopus stops moving after a minute or two until you poke it again, then it jiggles a little more. Just didn’t expect it to be so dead so soon TIPS: — Taking a wild guess here, but this place probably isn’t the best place for korean food in the area. Take your money else where if you’re looking for a good but reasonably priced meal.

Omg I totally forgot what I ordered but it was $ 119 And it was excellent!!! I loved everything! there was so much food and definitely worth it! My lobster head was still moving, one of the main reasons why I wanted to try this place. I followed these bloggers, Aimee and Dani Song. I had no idea of the restaurant until I searched it. The live octopus sold me but sadly I didn’t get a chance to eat it. They don’t serve it in Sundays. The best entrée of all is the lobster soup… omg it was super good!!! I highly recommend this place!

Hwal Uh Kwang Jang is a no frills Korean seafood restaurant. The best time to come here is during their lunch specials. For $ 7.99, you can get a huge bowl of hwe dup bap — a Korean version of Chirashi with cubed raw fish, lettuce, seaweed and other veggies topped off with gochujang. I also ordered the spicy tuna roll which was pretty big. Another plus is that you get banchan with your food.

Drop everything and go here to order this dish!!! Hwe dup bap aka sashimi rice salad. 1) put the rice in the bowl. 2) add delicious red chili sauce to taste. 3) mix it all together. You have to go during lunchtime to get this huge bowl for $ 8. Also note, you cannot take the leftovers home due to the raw fish. Just looking at this picture makes me want to go back. Bring cash, I think there’s a $ 15 minimum for cards.

I love coming here for their sashimi salad bowl. Can’t beat the special lunch price of $ 7.99. It’s healthy, delicious, and cheap! The place is tiny and not much as far as atmosphere goes, but the food is good. Also had their sashimi which was good, but the sashimi salad bowl is a perfect meal. Beware, they don’t speak much English, but you figure out how to communicate.

Came here to try their 7.99 lunch hwe dup bab special. The restaurant is in a plaza with parking available and the store itself is pretty small. If you come during lunch, you will probably need to wait a bit but the tables turn over quickly. I usually frequent A-won for their hwe dup bab but it’s a bit more $$ there so if you want a no hassle, cheap, no frills lunch, this is the place to come.

I almost don’t want to review this place because I don’t want it to be discovered. I had most interesting meal of my life. Live octopus and live lobster on top of multiple courses like sea cucumber, sea squirt, abalone, oysters, and salmon — all at a totally affordable price. This place is only for those who love an authentic experience and an adventurous meal. A lot of the food isn’t really adapted to the western/American palate(even the menus are hard to decipher) but that’s totally ok because you’re coming for a proper Korean seafood experience. Indulge at this place and try something totally new!

Hwal Uh Kwang Jang is a low key Korean seafood place. Though it’s not as big or well known as Masan or T=Fish, it’s still decent food at decent prices. The menu is simple and the interior small and clean. The al bap here isn’t as colorful or big as A-Won, but it’s still pretty good. Al bap is different kinds of fish roe and eggs, as well as uni, over rice. Texture-wise, it’s one of my favorite dishes, and it’s pretty fresh here. They also have jogaetang, which is Korean clam soup. It looks pretty watery, but definitely tastes more flavorful than it looks. The clams and mussels aren’t bad at all. Overall, an affordable spot for Korean style seafood and sashimi. It’s a bit more pricey for dinner, but definitely want to come back for the cheap lunch specials!

Hwal Uh Kwang Jang aka something I can’t pronounce. I went here with my Korean friends aka the K-Town Mob aka North Koreans aka Kim Jong Un’s relatives. They told me it’s pretty ghetto and the tables weren’t the cleanest. I told them not worry and it sounds like a typical Chinese/Vietnamese restaurant. Hwal Uh Kwang Jang is a Korean sashimi restaurant and it’s the freshest sashimi you could get. Fresh as in the fish was killed moments before it was serve to you. It’s a PETA protest waiting to happen. Anyway, we tried a lot of items on the menu and the two items that stood out for me was the following: 1) Halibut — The Halibut was cut very thin and served on a bed of ice. I was impressed how thin it was cut. That’s some skill with a blade. 2) Lobster — Okay this maybe disturbing to some but the lobster was still some what alive when we were picking at it and eating it. The head was still moving and it was interesting to eat lobster that fresh. I guess it provides new meaning to «Don’t play with your food.» Overall, the service was great and the sashimi doesn’t get any fresher than Hwal Uh Kwang Jang. I would highly recommend this spot to any sushi lover.

Korean Sashimi-Hweh! Small cozy place that has sashimi courses that comes with porridge, tempura, spicy fish stew, corn cheese, clam & mussle soup, and sashimi platter. Most of these options are for 2+ servings, but for those who eat much less, it’s a lot of food! Nonetheless, the sashimi was pretty yummy and learned something new! The way you eat Hamachi sashimi… dip it in sesame seed oil with salt, wrapped with unsalted dry seaweed! I didnt know this combo was soooo good! BUT…the Hamachi sashimi was half way frozen, and we couldn’t eat it, until way later. =( Halibut was chewy and yummy, that was great with korean hot paste sauce mixed with wasabi. Fish stew was so-so. Lack of ingredients in there. Service was good and the place was busy. I wish the Hamchi wasn’t frozen and the stew had more taste.
