Was bumming around Melrose one day when the rain hit. I’d been in nearly every vintage shop and spent too much time looking at old records when I saw the sign for HVW8. I headed down the side street and found the gallery’s frontman Max. We had a great chat… about art and music and cities we love. Telling me about the artists that had pieces on display made their work come alive for me. He told me about an event they were planning, a post-Grammy event for Mos Def. I came back about a week later with some friends and saw it was hopping. Even though we just missed Mr. Def and his dashing smile(I’d seen him flash it at my lunchspot in TO once) I did meet a whole crew of fascinating people. This is the kind of place I’ll always go back to when I visit, just wish it was more often. In the meantime I’ll just keep checking out what Max and his crew are up to online.

Part gallery and music studio — part retail space. Art and design from current heavy hitters like Parra, Kevin Lyons, Brent Rollins, Geoff McFetridge and Michael Leon. New pieces added all the time. The Gallery also hosts bbqs on Sundays, when they records music for their podcast. Everything from old funk and soul to the newest hip hop and electronic artists. Amazing stuff going on. Stop by and you’ll probably find something you never knew you couldn’t live without.
