Gather DTLA

The store has transfered owners. Tifanee is taking such great care of the shop and featuring more local hand dyers. Not to mention, she’s also bringing in local artists to make leather project bags and adorable yarn bowls. The Sunday Social is intimate and fun. Other local shops are cute and fun but none other offer the artistic charm of Gather.

What a gem! A nice surprise to find this little shop on the mezzanine of The Last Bookstore. A treat within a treat — like a prize in the CrackerJack box.
The woman (my receipt says Danielle) who worked there was so friendly and helpful. I had some very specific criteria — fiber choice, weight, machine washability, and she had many suggestions.
The space is small, but the selection is carefully curated and the shop has the welcoming warmth a yarn store should!

I took an intro to knitting class with Evi yesterday and I can’t say enough good things about her and her shop. She was incredibly patient and knowledgeable about knitting, tools and yarn. She went above and beyond to explain the intricacies of knitting to me instead of just showing me the fundamentals and sending me on my way.
The shop is located inside a quiet, upstairs corner of a fantastic bookstore. There were plenty of yarns to choose from and Evi explained that she knew everything about the yarn, including the farmers it was sourced from.
My knitting has already improved since my lesson yesterday and I can’t wait to head back to Gather for more lessons and meet-​ups!

I took my first knitting class here and it was great! Evi is a patient teacher with a wealth of knowledge. Now, I am knitting my first scarf and can’t wait to continue on with more and more projects!

I love this place! Everyone was super helpful and encouraged me to join their knitting crew. Stayed for about a ½ am hour & I felt completely at home. Special should out to Danielle who gave us the best service. This place rocks!

Came here for YarnCrawl LA for the first time and was delighted to discover a cute little knitting shop to add to my knit fix list. I live a little far away to come here more then I’d like, but whenever I’m in the area, I will make it a priority.

I really enjoy this shop and make an effort to stop by on the way home from work! It’s super accessible from LA Metro — Red Line — Pershing Square stop (1.5 blocks) (a little walk through DTLA from the Blue Line — 7^th St Metro Station, approx. 7 blocks))! Evi and Ren are very helpful when picking out yarn and discussing possible projects and seeing what everyone is up to is inspiring to start new projects. Love Gather and so glad you all are here to serve urban knitters and to have a place to go feel the yarn!
I appreciate that the staff select yarns that I can’t find elsewhere in LA (including independent hand dyes), and they communicate openly with their customers when deciding what to stock. They are so friendly and open, while challenging me to stretch my knitting comfort zone in techniques, artistic quality, patterns, type of item, and yarn choice.

Nestled in the cozy upstairs of The Last Bookstore, Gather DTLA is a treasure chest for knitters and crocheters, or appreciators of both, like myself. I picked up a darling little quasi-​cloche red knit hat by Raghouse International, which was literally exactly what I wanted. I was truly thinking this morning, «man, I really want a cloche-​style knit red hat – oh, well, never gonna find that…» So what a happy bit of happenstance that I stumbled across Gather DTLA. Cannot wait to wear it to my book reading tomorrow! They also have a number of sweaters, and of course yarn for those of you with the skills and patience to DIY. A truely delightful find!

Gather is creative, experienced, knowledgable, versatile, diverse, flexible and supportive.
Creative samples are on display such as a heart with valves to coincide with February’s theme of love.
The staff is experienced as they can offer suggestions to help you resolve mistakes you make on a piece… you know, that one stitch you messed up on in row 35 of 55.
The staff’s knowledge enables them to answer questions about their products from yarn to needles to patterns.
Gather is versatile as it offers talks on the historic context of knitting, features artists’ works on display in store and has an on-​line store for e-​purchases.
The store’s products are diverse in color, texture, and country of origin.
Class hours are flexible as the intro to crochet can be scheduled by appointment in addition to the already designed times.
The community that patrons Gather support each other by sharing projects, tips, chat, and eats.
Since Gather is a great resource, it is up to you as a customer to decide what to make of Gather. Will you get your next project idea from Gather? Buy yarn from Uruguay in a vibrant color to add life to the scarf you are knitting? Attend a talk on the history of the stitch? Chat with your neighbor at a hosted Sunday Social?
Personally…I originally wanted to learn knitting technique. But, I have derived much more from Gather. I am currently enrolled in a class to knit the Pickles’ Good Morning Sweater. And, with each stitch I can feel myself becoming one with the sweater. Weaving the ups and down of my day into the piece. I am excited to finish and wear the sweater. To wear something I knitted and an article that was created with much heartfelt sentiment.

I have been knitting for at least 10 years and so I have visited many LYS around LA! Some are nice, some ignore you, some have a nice friendly vibe and this is Gather! From the first time I went I liked the friendly and open vide!
I have take two classes at Gather so far and both were excellent! It was a nice small class size– only two in 1^st class and 3 in second! I learned so much in both classes– but didn’t feel the pressure to keep up with 10 other people or wait 15 minutes for the instructor to help me!
Gather is a small shop and thus has a smaller selection of yarn than larger shops– but the selection they have is well chosen and really nice!
If you are looking for a nice cozy place to take a class, get inspired, pick up some yarn for a new project– I think you will like it here!

I like to think that I’m coordinated and I’m always looking for a new skill to learn, so why not knitting? :)
Took Gather’s intro to knitting class last week and let me tell you, I’m hooked! It’s definitely just as hard as I thought it’d be, but Evi was awesome and I learned so much about knitting and yarn and patience… I can’t wait to make my first piece.
Whether you’re a knitting pro or newbie novice, gather at Gather. Mate you’ll see me there knitting away!

After seeing what great reviews this place had, I made a trek here specifically from Pasadena to come visit and was terribly disappointed.
It is a lovely shop, and the owner seemed nice. But the selection was tiny, and wasn’t worth the drive and parking and hassle. If you are in DTLA, by all means it is worth a visit. But don’t drive downtown just to visit this place; you can buy the same small selection of yarn all over LA.

I used to crochet back in the day with my mom on cold winter nights. (i swear this is true and not the opening line to a book)
It’s been a long time since i’ve hooked anything together but wow, i tell you that this place makes me want to pick on a set of needles and learn how to knit. They have everything you need! Including classes! How awesome is that? The owner, Evi, may be the most friendly, knowledgeable & dedicated business owner i’ve met.
They have tons of high end yarn and even a special Gather brand! Which is all fine and dandy but for the novice in me i found myself super delighted with the mystery bin which has lots of fun practice yarn colors at a convenient price.
I’m very excited to get knitting. Looking for a class soon so i can relax and learn to knit.

Enter through The Last Bookstore and look up to your right. In the corner you will see a tiny little cage (how it appeared) area. In there is Gather DTLA.
I went to Gather DTLA during the 2^nd annual LA Yarn Crawl. I have to visit (and will visit) when it’s less crowded because it was so small I couldn’t get the actual vibe for it. I did hear some great news and that was that they will soon be expanding. I truly hope so, because this is a little business that could, can, and will.
It is smallish yarn store, but I’m happy that now when I take my jaunts through DTLA I will always stop here. I appreciate the stores layout and the friendly owner. Even better is that I get to wander around the labyrinth that is The Last Bookstore to get there.

Love. This. Shop. Gather is a wonderful addition to the DTLA community. The fact that it’s in a bookstore makes it that much better. But most importantly, when you walk in you’re treated like more than a customer. I love shops where you feel respected and welcomed from the second you walk in the door (as a former shop owner, I know firsthand how important that is).
This is the first shop since I closed my own that I really want to spend more time in. (And as soon as my work schedule lightens up, I’m planning to do just that) Support them! Shops like this don’t come around often. And they deserve to be here for a long, long time.

Finally! We have an independent yarn shop right in the heart of downtown Los Angles. I’ve been crocheting all my life and knitting for about 6 years and then I went into business as a «croknit» designer and you how you hear of yarn shops and popular places that yarnistas go to within the industry? Well it just seemed like all the yarn shops are on the West side of town. One’s in which I would never make it to. I am happy I can walk five minutes to this yarn shop and spend a lot of time there working on projects and talking with the owner, Evi, who is an amazing knitwear designer and is truly passionate about fiber.
I love the yarn that is carried here. The organic worsted cotton feels so soft. There are a lot of fun accessories too. There are knitting and crochet classes available and on Sundays, the knitting and crochet social takes place.
The best part is that this yarn shop is located in the world famous Last Bookstore, a place I frequent ALL the time, so it is a nice addition.
Gather is a very down to earth place where there is not separation of knitters and crocheter, because believe you me. I went to a yarn shop whose name I will not mention. I did not tell them I was a crocheter, but they put down crochet so much, that I just said thank you and left. I definitely do not want to visit yarn shops with the elitist attitude that knitting is better than crochet. This is why Gather is called Gather. It’s the place where all fiberholics come together to enjoy each other projects. No snootiness here!

I have loved this bookstore for a long time while I lived in downtown. Now that there is a yarn store inside — how could it get any better?
This bookstore is so inspiring from the get-​go (fantastic decorations!), which adds to the wonderful ambiance of the yarn store. The girls there are very nice, and their inventory is ever-​expanding! I can’t wait to try their social group on Sunday nights.
With coffee shops just down the block, it can’t really get much better. And one of the things that sets this yarn store apart from all the others — it’s open late! THANK YOU for not closing at 5:00pm — some of us have to work!
