El Chino is a real hidden gem in Westlake. And I mean truly hidden, given that it’s clientele seems to be all locals. I’ve been coming here on-and-off for more than ten years, and it’s quality is top-notch. What you get here is great Mexico City-style food and refreshments. The menu rotates, so you can almost always find something new to try. The place is tiny, with just a few tables in the back. Order your food and make your way back there, lest you get elbowed out of the way like my friend once did. Today I sat on the one table in the front of the restaurant while I kept an eye on my illegally-parked car. I had a milanesa torta and an horchata. The bread was toasty inside and out, the milanesa steak was thin and lightly breaded, all finished off with queso fresco, plenty of avocado and tomatoes(I held back the lettuce for a more authentic flavor), garnished with pickled jalapeños and carrots on the side. A cup of red salsa was given on request — you must try this. The horchata was lightly sweetened. An all-around chilango treat. I finished up in time to move my car before LADOT parking enforcement came by. Score one for El Chino, I hope this place never changes.

If my mexican momma brought me here, then I need no further assurance that this place is as real as they come. Momma insisted on bringing me here one day and I grudgingly obliged. I should have known by now that she knows best. Apparently I’ll never learn. This hole in da wall serves up plates of traditional Mexican dishes. Their menu varies day to day. Depending on what day you go, you can find bistec con papa en salsa verde, chiles rellenos, bistec en chile adobo, costillas, and it goes on. You get rice and beans and hand made tortillas. They have good salsas. They are other things on their menu like tortas, and those are delicious as well. Pozole is served on the weekends. I really have nothing negative to say about El Chino. My mom is friendly with the lady and every time she’s come over to ask us how our meal was I have no complaints. This is one of those small businesses that I hope is around for years to come, so that my craving for Mexican food is satisfied when I’m in the mood(and in the area).
