Specialties
Providing unique and unusual movie viewing opportunities to film lovers in the Los Angeles area.
History
Established in 1981.
The non-profit American Cinematheque was conceived as a year round film festival by Gary Essert and Gary Abrahams who also founded the legendary Los Angeles Film Festival FILMEX (1971 — 1982). The American Cinematheque bought the 1922 Egyptian Theatre from the City of Los Angeles for $ 1 with the stipulation that the theatre be renovated. Following a $ 15 million renovation, restoration and adaptive re-use under federal guidelines for historic restoration, the Egyptian Theatre re-opened on December 4, 1998 with a 75th anniversary première of «The Ten Commandments» (which originally premiered at the theatre in 1923). The Egyptian was the home of the very first Hollywood movie première on October 18, 1922.
