Established in 1989.

This ministry was pioneered by Dr. David J. Walker in 1989. A protégé of Dr. Robert Bitzer, Dr. Walker was known for being the finest teacher of Principle of his generation. His legacy lives on as this Center, and through the healed, happy lives of the thousands who were prospered by his talks, treatments and generosity of spirit

Meet the Manager

John M.

Manager

Rev. John M. McLean, accepted the invitation to be Director of the Center for Spiritual Living — Los Angeles in June 2010. He had previously served ministries in Nashville, Tennessee and Bellevue, Washington since his ordination in 2003.

He began his spiritual journey with Dr. David Walker at this very center, then called Los Angeles Church of Religious Science. He was first licensed as a practitioner under Dr. Walker and also served on the Board of Trustees. His New Thought study expanded when he moved to New York City and experienced the late Eric Butterworth. He is deeply honored to be back at CSL-​LA where he will continue his work as teacher and speaker, aiming to encourage all who are seeking a better experience of life through understanding and applying our wonderful Truth teaching.

I was raised with no religious or spiritual education so I was looking for a place where I felt comfortable and not like an outsider. I was intimidated with Jewish synagogues as most people are very observant. I had tried Agape many years ago and felt that it was not for me.
I LOVE Rev McClean and the Center for Spiritual Living.
The message is spiritual, NOT religious and there is no dogma.
I think it combines all of the «best practices» from the world’s religions.
Mindfulness, presence, compassion, connecting with the divine /​God.
It’s a very relaxed vibe. No one is trying to recruit me or sell me anything. I was welcomed as a first timer, given a little welcome packet and that’s it.
The Sunday service takes place in a nice theater so you are sitting in theater chairs and not pressed up against somebody on a bench or pew. There is a 4 – 5 piece little band that plays contemporary music. The first time I went, they played Bill Withers, «Lovely Day» and I teared up it was so perfect in that moment for me.
The Reverend’s discussion is is positive, and thoughtful and most importantly, it’s very relatable and he’s not «preaching». He is funny, down to Earth, self deprecating while being inspirational. Some Sundays the message gets to me more than others but more than anything, it’ s a really great way to start your week off with a positive group of people who want love, God and good things in their life.
I have been trying to gain an understanding of what God means to me. I tried meditation and realized, I don’t really know what spirituality means to me. So this is one the things I try to do to remain conscious, and aware of spirit. I have been reading books, continuing to meditate when I can, and attending the Center for Spritiual Living’s Sunday service.

I’m a long-​time member of CSL-​LA and find it a loving, intellectual, and dynamic spiritual home. Rev. John McLean leads us with wisdom, humor, spontaneity, and a deep spiritual understanding of our New Thought teaching. If you’re looking for a place to be yourself while learning how to think for yourself, this is it. The frosting on the cake is the music on Sunday mornings — sublime! Our jazzy ensemble is the real deal.
