Buky House

So, I’ve been trying to stay at this location for years. I finally called and got someone on the phone who told me I had to email my request to stay for one night instead of their two night minimum. OK, fine.
No response. No response to my second inquiry online nor any of my multiple calls. No one answers. I was willing to pay extra for one night as I had mentioned to the man on the phone, and of course, my trip did get extended to 3 nights, so I would have had 3 nights overall, with my friend renting an additional room for 2 nights for a total of 5 rental nights.
My business is clearly not good enough. Thanks for responding!

It’s been a yr, but our family is now about to plan a return! Home away from our east coast home…
Great location… Eccentric… Owner was the perfect amount of helpful and left us alone… Was like visiting a family member… Place was awesome, no it’s not a hotel, that’s what makes it so fantastic, it’s UNIQUE

On my second stay at Buky and already have my third one booked !
The location is perfect, the house is beautiful and Gail is super helpful & friendly.
This isn’t a hotel, and that’s why I like it. I like to be able to come and go and she even bought in my favourite cereal for me ! It’s the best nights sleep I’ve had in the USA.

Great location. Close to where both of my sons live and it’s a lovely old home that’s shabby chic and comfortable. Though it’s not the cleanest, Gail and the housekeepers make an effort to keep it up. Hubby and I rented the «overflow room,» meaning Gail’s office and we shared her bathroom — and it worked for 4 nights.
The do-​it-​yourself breakfast fare turned out to be decent coffee and half & half, surprisingly good Costco strawberries and plain yogurt. The granola in a jar was stale and Costco bagels were — well, Costco bagels — which, considering this is LA, Gail could spring for some good bagels, fresh cream cheese and fruit daily — without too much effort.
My only real issue is that we had to be pro-​active to get Gail to:
— make room in the office so we could store our clothes on some shelves — which turned out to be small baskets
— ask Gail if she had a fan because when we were there the temp rose to 90 one day and mid-​80s the next and the room was hot. Turned out Gail has central air conditioning that works very well, but she hadn’t turned it on. She did, however, turn it on when asked.
— request a hair dryer, which she found for us
All in all, it’s an okay place at a good rate and great location. The owner appears to be «over» her role as an inn-​keeper, but she does fulfill requests when asked.

I stayed at the Buky House and found it to be just fabulous. I am thrilled that I did not read that negative comment before my visit there. Although she seems to be complaining about soap and a lack of personal attention, I like that the owner of the B&B left us alone. I did not go there for her attention, but, for the peace and tranquility, not to mention the great location. Though this is a private home I did not find this to be a problem at all. I love the place and will stay there again. Thank you for having a clean, well appointed B&B. The Breakfast was satisfactory. I knew that there was no restaurant before I arrived.

May 11 — After the owner commented on this post, I emailed her directly to explain in great detail what our problems were with the place (which she was already aware of because we had to call her at least 3 times about problems while we stayed there… and I say «call» because she only dropped by the place once while we were there, and she only dropped by the place that one time to show some potential renters off of Craigslist the place…).
At any rate, I have not heard back from her. No apology, no explanation, nothing. This place has left the worst taste in my mouth that I’ve had from any business, ever. Folks, don’t just stay away, RUN!

Luxurious, art-​filled, and with a comfortable bed in the bedroom behind the kitchen, this home is a sensual feast. The Wi-​Fi connection was flawless. Although the Website indicates $ 95 to $ 105 for a single, I paid $ 120 before tax for each of my two nights (the minimum stay); and the first night was billed to my credit card a couple of weeks before my arrival. However, considering the exceptionally attractive accommodations, I still find Buky House to be an excellent value.

Gail Buky’s cozy quiet setting and great location made for an enjoyable stay during our recent trek to El Lay. Being a film freak from way back, I loved the Buky’s house eclectic look. Sitting in the living room one evening, I could picture one of the characters from a Nathaniel West novel walking in to offer me a drink.
We also appreciated being able to go for a brisk walk around the neighborhood or even the nearby eateries. It’s more a «Bed & Make Your Own Breakfast» but we were just fine with that. Next time we’re in LA, we’ll be staying at the Buky House. Oh, hope you’re a cat person. You should be prepared for a warm, fuzzy welcome from Scooter.

Last weekend was our second time staying at the Buky House and we loved it. Gail’s home is both stylish and comfortable with authentic modern art mixed with the original 1920s décor. The bedrooms are spacious and comfortable. The neighborhood is very upscale and convenient to shopping and restaurants. Without a doubt this is where would stay if we returned to LA for another trip.

This is a gem. So good I’m reluctant to post it, in case I want to stay there again soon (and I do!). If you’re going to visit Hollywood or Downtown Los Angeles, dang. This is the place to stay if you want to stay «at home.»
Gail Buky has a wondrous Italiante home in Hancock Park, a very elegant upper-​middle class neighborhood just off of LaBrea Ave. When you enter the front door and climb the stone steps, you feel as if you’re entering a celebrity’s home from the 20s. A huge living room (with fireplace!) on the right, a formal dining room on the left, and a hallway to the two guest rooms (she is remodeling the ground floor, she says, to add one more). As you pass down the hall, a huge kitchen and breakfast area awaits (Gail seems to be a near professional quality cook). The Purple Room we stayed in is cosy, with a smallish but nice bathroom, and totally quiet due to being in a private neighborhood. The other room has a much larger area and larger bath (she was using it this weekend) and is equally delightful.
What makes this place special is the ‘slippers’ quality of it. It’s not the «we’re-a-hotel-but-call-ourselves-a-B&B» place with a dozen rooms; you’re living in what feels like your home. Have a drink in the living room, relax in the kitchen, this is home, folks. And Gail is delightful, with hints on places to go and shop (there is a Trader Joe’s and Ralphs only 2 blocks away). Breakfast is equally informal — delicious bread toasted, some great cereal, some fruit, and exceptional coffee, self-​serve.
I understand that she has Wi-​Fi, although I didn’t use it, and you are entitled to give proper reverence to Scooter, her adorable and huge totally grey cat (rub the ears!).
What a joy to stay here!
