Aim Higher Construction

I had meant to post a review right after this lovely company completed its work, but I am so glad I waited. This way, not only can I talk about the frustrations of dealing with them, I can list everything that has fallen apart in the 2 ½ years since they left.
While they were completing their work:
1. They tore our yard apart, and then waited over a month to start the actual work, so that we had a moonscape out back for weeks.
2. Even when they did start, they treated us as a weekend hobby, and would show up on Saturdays if we were lucky. This again delayed the work in our back yard and on our addition for several more months. The subcontractors they hired completed their work in a much more timely fashion than they did.
3. They said they would move our plants to the front yard, and killed almost all of them. They killed a good deal of our grass as well. We had to re-​landscape everything.
4. They put in decorative concrete in our yard well before they completed anything else; this concrete was irrevocably stained a nice dirty grey because of the back-​assed timing.
5. THEY PUT IN A SLIDING GLASS DOOR AT THE END OF THE PROJECT. BECAUSE WE POINTED OUT IT DID NOT HAVE A LOCK, THEY TOOK THE DOOR HANDLE, SAID THEY WOULD COME BACK, AND DISAPPEARED. Don’t get excited, cause we have replaced the door handle with one with a lock on our own. That said, we could have easily sued them over this issue and won. WE CALLED AND EMAILED THEM MULTIPLE TIMES OVER THIS ISSUE WITH NO RESPONSE. IN OTHER WORDS, THEY TOOK OUR MONEY AND LEFT THE JOB INCOMPLETE.
6. WE WOULD CALL THEM OR EMAIL THEM WITH OUR CONCERNS, AND THEY WOULD RARELY RESPOND IN GENERAL. THEY WOULD SAY THEY WERE COMING WHEN WE COMPLAINED ABOUT DELAYS, AND WOULD NOT SHOW UP FOR DAYS.
I suspect most of these issues had to do with their own cash flow problems.
Now to everything that has fallen apart since they left:
1. Their subcontractor installed an automatic gate incorrectly and was unreachable when it broke. Aim Higher was unreachable. We had to hire someone else to fix it. It was an easy fix that spoke to the inexperience and lack of professionalism of the original installer. It still cost us a few hundred dollars that should have been covered by Aim Higher.
2. The grasscrete that they installed as cheaply as possible in our back yard failed almost immediately. Now we get to drive over a moonscape. This will be very expensive to replace.
3. We had to restain the front door that they stained as cheaply as possible, after very little time.
4. Their paint job faded/​rusted/​peeled almost immediately, likely due to poor materials.
5. The crappy screen door they installed fell off the door almost immediately. We’re still trying to find a replacement.
So far the main structure they built has not fallen. May that continue, God willing…
Bottom line: They use cheap materials and bad subcontractors, they install items incorrectly, they don’t take care of what they do install, and most importantly: THEY DON’T SHOW UP WHEN THEY SAY THEY WILL, THEY DO NOT RESPOND TO CONCERNS, AND THEY LEFT OUR JOB INCOMPLETE.
Don’t use them.

Ted was recommended by my architect, who had an excellent experience with him the past, for an approx. $ 150k-​$ 175k interior remodel. Ted was very responsive initially being very generous with his time both over the phone and at the property. We had agreed in concept that we would hire him for the demo to get a jump start on the job and we would finalize costs once the drawings were complete. He spent considerable time at the house but never came through with a demo price and went completely silent for about 3 weeks despite numerous attempts to reach him. In fact, several of his demo notes are still at my house. We finally connected, he apologized for being hard to reach and said he would get me a price on demo within the week. I never heard from him again.
Nice guy but flaky and elusive to the point it is inconsiderate. I’m sure a bigger, more profitable job came up, which is fine. However, I would expect the consideration to tell me that instead of just disappearing after I’ve told him that I want to hire him.

As of 12÷2÷13, I’m updating my review of AIM to lower their rating by one star to two stars overall (instead of three stars). Again, they did a great job with the interior work but then finished the exterior work only after much nagging on my end. The reason for the lower star rating now is that I asked them for a new roof/​HVAC estimate over SIX months ago and AIM keeps telling me that they are close to finished with the estimate but I still haven’t heard from them as of today. It’s too bad that my experience with them has ended this way after spending close to $ 200k with them already.

I scheduled an estimate with Aim Higher for some retaining walls and a possible foundation issue. I explained to the person doing the scheduling that I’m in escrow, and I will need to repair these items to close. To do a renovation loan, I needed a fairly detailed estimate. She said she understood, and the estimate is free.
When Gregorio showed up for the estimate, he didn’t measure anything and gave me a ballpark– with a $ 20,000 variable. He said he really needed his engineer to come out to be more accurate, and she would charge me. I said that was no problem if I could get a decent estimate with some details about what needs to be fixed so we could get the process going in the meantime. He said he would only put something in writing if I gave him $ 100 for his gas and time. I laughed and said that I was told the estimate is free. He told he there’s no job there, that he doesn’t feel like I’d be going through with the repair. When I reminded him that I was told it’s a free estimate, he kept repeating that he wanted to be paid for time and gas.
I don’t mind paying for an estimate if I agree to it up front. My other bid cost $ 250, but they bring the engineer out with them to get it right the first time. Wasting my time and my gas money– then trying to hold an estimate hostage is kind of funny. I’m not sure what he thinks is important in business. After spending the time and gas getting to the free estimate, one would think the $ 40 – 60,000 for the job would be enough incentive to write it down.

I am so glad that I recommended Aim Higher construction to my clients for there master bed & bath remodel. I really was impressed with Ted and his crew. I really enjoyed working with him and hope we can do many more projects together.

I’m an Architect, and met AIM Higher through a mutual client. The project went so smoothly I was a bit in shock. They’re quite proactive, calling to discuss issues while there’s still time to sort them out. Finish quality was top notch, and they passed all inspections with flying colors. I’ll recommend them to anyone looking for high quality contracting.

I started a hillside construction job years ago, it was a disaster, I was at my wits end when a friend sent these guys over to see if they could help me. I liked what they had to say, but hey, they all sound good at first, anyhow I was in a bind so I gave them a shot. Well, it turned out to be the best thing I could of done. I was impressed with their work, so much that when I decided to add another room they were the only people I called. Their work is top drawer, their price is fair. If only I had found these guys sooner I would of saved myself a lot of grief and money over the years.

AIM has done quite a bit of work at our Los Feliz home. I have never, ever met a more professional, ethical group of people. Always (ALWAYS!) on time, fair bids, and they would clean up their work area every single day. Always a clear explanation of the work that was to be performed, always with follow-​up, and always a pleasure to have them in our home. And the quality of work is excellent.
We have an older child with multiple disabilities and their crew was always extremely aware of his needs, nap schedule, etc. If there was too much noise, they would stop their work until my son was out of the house. Incredible. I’ve never met contractors that were nicer to us.
We just love them and miss them if they’re not around. You will not be disappointed in this crew.

Ted, Greg, Rocio and their crew are amazing!
Finally there is a contractor, who you can trust and will be their for you through the whole construction process!
Their workmanship is excellent, timely and affordable!
I am so happy to know them and would refer Aim Higher Construction to any of my friends and clients.
I know if something breaks in my house, I just have to call Ted or Greg and someone will be there to do my repairs, with the highest quality.
