Adam Barnhardt’s School of Comedy

Ari Shaffir, when asked about comedy classes, said they’re a bad thing. Guys like Mitch Hedberg would never survive a class, their uniqueness would be squashed by some guru saying, «That’s not how stand-​up is done!» That may be true for all the other classes but not here. Definitely not here.
Safe place. That’s how I would describe the class. A place where your unique voice is nurtured. A place where your perspective is more important than tired joke structure. You’ll learn joke structure but you’re also free to throw that shit out and talk about the stuff you want to talk about, in the way you want to talk about it. There’s no rules, no one way to do things.
Your classmates will become your good friends. You guys are going to go on a journey together. I was fortunate to have few experienced comics in the class who gave me wonderful advice and encouragement. What they got out of it was different than what I got out of it, having never done stand-​up in my life, but those are the kind of people Adam’s class attracts. Fun, smart people that are a joy to be around.
When I was considering the different teachers, the Unilocal reviews for the other classes had a lot of stuff about after the class showcase, the person was invited back for more performances. If that’s important to you, you should know that after my showcase at the Comedy Store I was invited back to perform 4 more shows there.
So I’ll be rocking the stage again soon. If I hadn’t had the safe place to develop, I’m not sure I would have made it past the first open mic. Which is another great point, the Clown House open mic will be available to you during and after the workshop. It’s the best open mic in town.
If you’re on the fence, go for it. This class changed the trajectory of my life. It got me headed in the right direction. It can help you, too.

Life changing!
Getting on stage to tell jokes is absolutely nerve wracking. Adam’s class (and method) allows you to find you’re own «voice.» Meaning, you get to work on what you think is funny, rather than being force fed jokes like at other schools. Though I took two of Adam’s classes, I still stop by at his working «training stage» on site to work on new material when I have it.
Located in the heart of downtown Los Angeles, Adam’s school is accessible by train and is in walking distance of L.A. Live and the Staples Center.

Adam is AWESOME! I took his beginning class, and did my first showcase at The Comedy Store, then went on and took the advanced class and did my second showcase at The Comedy Store.
Adam is a great teacher, who has a laid back style. He makes it comfortable for his students to learn stand up comedy, and he’s very supportive, without being overbearing. Going through the sessions, I bonded with my classmates, a great group of people, who were also very supportive. This was one of the best experiences of my life! I highly recommend Adam Barnhardt to anyone that thinks they want to do comedy, or might want to do comedy. It’s a great process for learning about yourself, and increasing your confidence level, if nothing else. Thank you Adam for changing my life!!!

Adam creates a supportive environment to explore comedy. Irrespective of experience, Adam welcomes all and the room is always diverse and filled with interesting people. It’s one of my favorite places to do comedy. I even drive from Anaheim!

So uncool. I’ve got a voucher I got online for a 5 week course called «Adam Barnhardt Comedy Therapy» It’s good until 10/​15/​2014. I’ve called and left messages to start the class at least 6 times and gotten NO response. If there’s no class then have the decency to let people know and stop taking their money.

You will not get a better deal in the world when it comes to taking
stand up comedy classes than from Adam. He is a cool guy too.
I was scheduled for five classes and he extended it to seven.
The classes are laid back open and free and I think this attracts
a crowd of people that are very easy going.

Adam’s class was a dream come true for me. I’ve always wanted to do stand up, but classes around L.A. were too expensive. Adam’s classes are very affordable, especially for all he delivers. I’ve had 3 full sessions with 3 performances at The Comedy Store Hollywood for less than what one session would cost around town with other comedy teachers. He helped create my own style in a very short amount of time. I’ve received several compliments from other comedians here in L.A., from co-​workers, family, friends, and complete strangers in the audience about how good my comic sets are each night. He helps you discover how you view life and how that directs your comedy. I was a total beginner and he really helped to polish my act. I highly recommend Adam’s classes! Again, I highly recommend Adam’s classes! If you want to do comedy, please take Adam’s classes!

Hi Everybody, Adam’s class is great. The people who take the class easily mesh. Next Sunday is our Première StandUp Experience @ the Comedy Store. My comedy has not been HAPPY, I’m changing that. See my follow up review next week.

After just a few weeks of comedy classes with Adam, I premiered at the world-​famous Comedy Store. I felt special but that’s just included in the class. Got that? Every student gets to première at the world-​famous Comedy Store on Sunset Boulevard. What I didn’t expect and what came as a surprise was the incredible healing I received through studying comedy under Adam’s guidance. Adam saw me through death, divorce, terminal serial Internet dating and worst of all… Writers block. But best of all he showed me how to laugh at myself.

I have Adam Barnhardt to thank for helping me break into Stand Up Comedy. Its something I’ve wanted to do since I was 7 years old. Adam’s Comedy College has helped me with everything from first getting on stage to dealing with crowd control, writing jokes and keeping motivated. If you have ever wanted to try Stand Up Comedy-​try here first. For the gift he is giving, he is very reasonably priced. The place is decorated very reminiscent of… a clown college with a modern flair, decorated in red black and white. The best part is when you sign up for the class, you can come to his friday nights where he has an open mic for all the ongoing students and also allows alumni’s, like myself, can drop in from time to time and do a set. Great school!

Adam is a great instructor, and creates a very supportive environment for people to learn and explore.

Adam is not only an amazing teacher he is more than that, he is a great Friend & Therapist. He help me to Re-​discover myself and he went deep into my brain so I could learn Why I am Who I am and how & become Me. He took the Comedian out of my Soul and put it out there. His One On One Advanced Sessions are incredible. I recommend him 100%.

I have taken both the beginner and advanced courses with Adam. He is truly an amazing person and excellent comedy teacher. Although you’re in a small class with other people, he works with each person individually to help refine their strong points and develop the other areas you need as a stage performer. He helped me face my stage fright and open up to an audience of strangers.
Adam has been a regular at the Comedy Store for over 10 years and has a weekly show. As part of his 6 week course, you will get to perform there as well. I highly recommend taking his class it is well worth the money.
