Who would ever go to Unilocal for a suggestion/​criticism about a radio station?
In any case, I’m astounded by this station. I’m 30, I grew up on All Eyez on Me, 2001, and Space Boogie: Smoke Odyssey. I’ve graduated to wu, alchemist, Jedi, statik, etc– but ok I digress…
I’ve heard «callin out names» by kurupt. They play «ether» by nas on the random. «Hit em up» IN HEAVY ROTATION. Lol. I used to spit that whole 2 minute rant at the end at the lunch tables in 8^th grade– and yes– they often play it thru to the bitter «My 4 – 4 make sure all y’all kids don’t grow!» Some quik/​digs free track I’ve never heard just came on. Right now. This is madness.
Thanks kday– I called in and chatted w a young lady around 9am this morn. Aside from the prospect of potentially buying her some coffee, I’d love to know if CiCi the mamasita ever shouted me out! I was workin away:)
Just keep it up. ⁴⁄₅ tracks are just bangers, and the ¹⁄₅ are reminiscent slow jams of my lonely college days lol. «I used to be commander in chief of my pimpsss, flyin hiii-​iighhh.» Classic.
I could go on. But nuff said. I even listen to the commercials through and through sometimes just to A) avoid hearing trap queen on any other station B) simply open myself to the potential of patronizing said businesses.

I love this station. I just sometimes get bored of power 106 or real 92.3 so I sometimes go old school. Too bad I can’t get a good signal where I live I’m only 13 an I still appreciate the old stuff. :)

I’m from San Diego and when I drive to Los Angeles, I’m always excited because that’s when I can listen to this radio station. Yeah, nobody likes the traffic in LA but this radio station always makes me happy when I’m stuck in LA traffic

The list could go on and on. Oh maaaan, there is not a song that is played on this station that does not have some sort of high school or college memory associated with it. Makes for good driving nostalgia. Just last week I was driving through the rich neighborhood (aka Hancock Park!) with Sisqo’s «Thong Song» on FULL BLAST! Heck yes I was in my little Camry at a red light makin my booty pop! And many times I want to put my car in park and jump out to C-​Walk when Dr. Dre’s «Next Episode» comes on. That’s what I love about KDAY. It’s just good ‘olé music and you can dance to. It makes me smile. It will make you smile too.

I was excited that it was back on but not streaming… big thumbs down!!! Are you not with the current times… like you know INTERNET!!! Who doesn’t stream their radio stations these days?

Holy hip hop!
This station is off the hook! I love love love this station. This might be the only station that plays OG music. So excited whenever I am in LA to turn on the radio to hear the best! I’m hoping they stream online so I can listen all the way from SF. Keep it up KDAY people are listening!

Minds were blown when my husband and I were on vacation in Ventura County last summer and we got spotty signals of an amazing, mysterious 90s hip-​hop station. One day we drove down 101 to the valley and we discovered how truly amazing KDAY is! We listened to Tribe Called Quest, Wu-​Tang, and of course, Ice Cube, in a day and age where Miguel, Robin Thicke, and Drake are played over and over and over again. Wish we had something like this in the Bay Area.
Can someone make it compatible with the TuneIn app? Please?

KDAY is the best radio station on the air hands down. They play a range of artists from Warren G to Tha Liks to Scarface to Wu-​Tang Clan. Sometimes they play what I call middle school dance anthems (I’m talking about Ciara, E-​40, Lloyd, etc.) I never really listen to the radio unless it is KDAY (with the exception of HOT 92.3), due to the fact Power 106 plays nothing but Nicki Garbage and similiar artists.
This music reminds me of being a little kid and listening to «California Love» by 2pac on 92.3 The Beat. haha
In April, they sold their company to some Chinese owners. Save KDAY! We do not need another crappy pop station that plays Rihanna on the radio every five minutes! lol

For the love of God please don’t sell out! You’re the only rap station I listen too! You’re the only station in the Greater La Area that’s dedicated to classic rap and hip-​hop. You’ll be hurting alot of people. I refuse to listen to today’s «artists» like Nicki Garbage, Dreck, Lil’ Lame, you get the idea. Please stick around an be a bastion for classic rap and hip-​hop and show these kids how its done.

I just read on the LA times that KDAY has been sold and will switch to a different format. WOW first they played power 106’s leftover garbage, then let go of tat and Cece and now sold to a Chinese company WTF!.. the only old school hip hop station that plays west coast legends like tupac, dogg pound, DJ quik, ice cube, mack 10, WC, eazy e, dr dre, warren g and etc. i always enjoyed their tributes to the late rappers by putting a full hour of their music. during the late night hours the music gets better but they slowly were adding power 106’s left overs and now i hardly hear any old school. from there its been down hill. since its coming to a end, i would like to thank everyone at KDAY for bringing back the old school. KDAY is what all hip hop/​rap stations should work towards being. I was hella sad when they shut down the old AM Station a long time ago. .. there just wasn’t anything else in LA back then doing the work that KDAY did day in and day out.
Young-​Timers: Did you know that back in the day they didn’t even PLAY Wu Tang Crew or Public Enemy on the «regular» radio stations? They thought it was too incendiary and today, it just sounds tame compared to many new cuts being played.
Nevertheless, KDAY doesn’t miss a beat all the day and night long. I was so pleased to have found it again on my trip back to LaLALand. Hadn’t really heard it since the old station.

Without a doubt, the bestest darn hip hop station on the West Coast, if not the entire US! I discovered KDAY a few years ago on one of my frequent trips to LA, and was always bummed to come back home to the pathetic stations we’ve got out here.
However, I was more than happy to learn that they also stream high quality audio on their website, so I’ve still been able to get my KDAY fix. Unfortunately, this was only beneficial when I had Internet access indoors, and not on the road or out and about. That is… until now.
I was elated to find out recently that KDAY is available on the Tune In Radio app on mobile phones! Now, I practically have it blaring at home, in the car, and when walking on the street… ²⁴⁄₇.
Although some newish songs are sometimes on rotation (typically the newest ones are at least five years old), the vast majority of the classic hits are from the 90’s and early 2000’s, bringing me back to my HS and college days. Obviously, since the station is in LA, there is a larger variety of SoCal artists, such as NWA, Ice Cube, Warren G, Mack 10, Dogg Pound, Rodney O. and Joe Cooley, DJ Quik, Dre and Snoop, etc.
Of course, the birthplace of hip hop, NYC, is also well represented, with such artists as Biggie Smalls, Mobb Deep, NAS, KRS-​1, Run DMC, Capone and Noreaga, The Lox, Shyne, LL Cool J, Wu Tang Clan, A Tribe Called Quest, Mos Def, Pharoahe Monch, and Jay-​Z. I even heard some ‘Lil Vicious the other day! The Bay also gets much love, as there is plenty of Too $hort, E-​40, Rappin’ 4Tay, Mac Mall, Mac Dre, Souls of Mischief, and Digital Underground, just to name a few.
What I am most pleased about is that most of the music on KDAY is pre-​crunk era, so we are not tortured by any of that dirty South garbage from the past few years. Best of all is the nonstop weekend mixes, with some of the more talented DJ’s this side of the Mississippi throwin’ it down on the 1’s and 2’s. Also, since this is an actual radio station complying with FCC rules, all songs are free of profanity, unlike on Pandora, so you don’t have to worry about cranking it up at work or when children and old ladies are present.
I am typically not one of those who complains about how crappy modern music is in comparison to the old days (this is a faulty argument, since comparing music from a random shorter period in time to an entire era spanning a whole decade or more is not entirely fair), but there is little doubt that as far as the airwaves go, the playlist on KDAY far exceeds just about any other station out there. As they say, per FCC rules, it’s the *ish.*

Can you believe I discovered this station on the same night that I attended my first Unilocal Elite event? Talk about the «Best… Evening… EVER!»
This station lays down a huge mix of super old school tracks, mostly Hip Hop and R&B. Honestly, I’m not a huge fan of all the songs, but the fact that they play all the great songs from the early 90s that everyone seems to have forgotten on the shelf makes KDAY my new favorite station.
One word: Smoove.
