I always passed by this place on my daily stop to trader joe’s. Finally we decided to give it a try. It was a pleasant surprise. The drinks menu was lengthy & the margarita I ordered was strong; a big plus in my book. We had shrimp Diablo(good), taqueria(good), burrito(good). The food is not super authentic as in they don’t use the real spice that much but tasty nonetheless. We were there early & as the hour progressed it got busy. The wait staff were a bit hard to catch.

I actually might call this place a hidden gem. It is never too crowded and is tucked away in a strip mall off Foothill. But, for authentic Mexican food and yummy margaritas– this place is the real deal. Also, their chips are homemade and their salsa, while spicy, is fantastic and just possibly my favorite salsa ever. The ambiance is casual but cute and they have a patio!

If this place wasn’t in Los Altos and I had the need to rep my city. I wouldn’t recommend this place. Like, don’t travel any distance to come to this place, but if you find yourself in the South Los Altos area, sure, come in for some Mexican. It’s a veryy standard Mexican place in terms of everything having all the same ingredients, just in different shapes(burrito, taco, enchilada, etc). I didn’t feel the need to take a photo or anything because the guac was kinda meh looking and the lettuce on the side was sad. like that white more than green lettuce color. I ordered the crunch wrap appetizer as my meal since it sounded more unique than the usual. It was a crunch wrap supreme like at Taco Bell. but about $ 9 more: D What was soo weird was that it was an appetizer and maybe she know that I ordered it as an entrée, but it wasn’t cut up to share or anything? It was in fact sooo hard to cut up cause it was huge and crunchy. Served as a good portion control though because I got too lazy to cut it at one point. It was pretty good though. My mom’s portabello mushroom ‘dillas were good! Chips and salsa were really good, nice and spicy and kept coming! PS they have a Groupon $ 12 for $ 20, not bad and they were cool about accepting it. The meal pre-Groupon, post-tax/tip was $ 48 for 3 people which is surprisingly high given that I compared it to Taco Bell.

I love it here! My boyfriend and I always come here! We love the El Cactus Margaritas! They serve home made chips and salsa too! The littler older lady is so nice and we love when she’s our server!

How do they stay in business? I frequent this area and although I don’t see inside I don’t see much going on. We go from time to time as its a convenient place is quiet Los Altos. Food is not great. The employees are super friendly.

We’ve been coming to Red Pepper for 25 – 30 years — back when they were on Stevens Creek. Their(free) starter salsa and chips are superb… chips still warm when they reach your table. My favorite chicken enchiladas are consistently made with white meat and plenty of it. Our favorite server, Pilar, always looks out for us. Servers have perfected that great habit of looking UP to see if a customer needs anything. But we rarely do because the servers look after their customers. e.g. refill soft drinks without asking. Open for lunch for the last few years — if you brave the TJ’s parking lot they share, settle in for lunch and watch a sporting event on one of the big TVs.

Good service, ok food and semi-ok bar/ambience. Wet Burrito is the best dish here in my opinion.

I had a great time eating here. The service was quick and friendly and the food was great! The location is nice and the interior of the restaurant is great with nice windows. The tortilla chips are warm, the salsa is hot, and I thought the red enchilada sauce was perfect. The tacos are served in hard shells which I like. The rice and beans were also perfect. I didn’t try any margaritas.

My parents and I have been coming off and on here for years. It’s their ‘go to’ stand by for Mexican. If you are craving some old standards, this is the place to go. Enchiladas and the like are tasty and do the trick. Their shrimp dishes are particularly tasty so give it a go. They have a spicer salsa on offer so ask for it if you like it hot. You won’t leave totally wow’d but they provide you with consistent food every time.

I was disappointed this evening because Red Pepper is usually good, but my nachos this evening were horrible. I wouldn’t suggest the nachos if you ever go in… I should have stuck with the enchiladas!!! The food is usually pretty good, but a little over priced!!! I’d rather have fiesta del mar for those prices.

My family and I have been going here for years. We love it because it is part of the neighborhood. I usually get either the cheese quesadilla or just a bean and cheese burrito. Really simple but pretty tasty. They also serve breakfast, which not many people know about. It is quick and simple. They have an assortment of breakfast foods but the omelets are the most popular. Overall, we love the neighborhood feel and always have great service.

Alright, as someone who was born and raised along foothill and has experienced the Red Pepper long before internet reviews were a thing, or before the Red Pepper shared parking lot space with Trader Joes, this review is more or less a guide to experience all the Red Pepper has to offer. First off, the complimentary chips and salsa. The bastion of the Red Pepper experience is the freshly made tortilla chips that are fresh out of the fryer and the salsa that is mellow at first then leaves a perfect burning aftertaste that only cools with another loaded chip. You’ll probably go through two baskets. Drinks… order a Tecate or Modelo. It’s on tap and perfect after the rounds of chips and salsa. For the entrée I suggest perusing the menu, to put on the act like their is numerous intriguing items on the menu, but when you put in your order you must get the Enchilada Mazatlan. When people ask what meal I would have as my last super, this is the first and only answer that comes to mind. Giant ass prawns, a garlicy, creamy, cheesy enchilada that comes with spanish rice, olive, avo, and refried beans. The portion is massive, so if you’re worried about finishing it all go straight to the enchilada. If you do finish, one of the two waiters who I’ve ever known to work there will probably compliment you. I really do not know how to conjure all the euphoric feelings this dish induces into writing but I do know that there is literally nothing else worth ordering, hence all the subpar reviews on Unilocal.I read through them, no mention of the Mazatlan, y’all missing out. To end the night if you’re feeling wild ask the waiter about their tequila selection. They know whats up and are more than happy to guide you on a agave fueled journey. Remember the key to a good time here is the cheap Mexican beer, and the Mazatlan. You should pretend to read the menu, but seriously just order the Mazatlan.

Had the nachos and they were good. Went back for their breakfast. My friend got the huevos rancheros and I has the breakfast plate which consisted of two eggs, fajita potatoes, two bacon strips and toast. It was all good!

We come in every few months since it is so close to home. I think our last visit was the best. We had assorted enchiladas and a huge steak burrito. Everything was served warm and it was very tasty. I agree, nothing is extraordinary but it is fine. The flan is not something I would order again. It wasn’t creamy and rich but rather rubbery and tasteless. The beer is served ice cold and delicious. There is a bike shop close by, so you get the clicking sound of bike shoes and football on the tv. Prices seem a bit high but it’s so nice to a have a cozy restaurant in this area of Los Altos. I’m always surprised it’s not more crowded.

They recently expanded their menu to offer breakfast and I decided to give them a shot this morning. I have been once before for dinner. I live nearby and really wish this place was better. The place was empty when we arrived. Always a bad sign when other places have a 45 min wait on Saturday morning. Still I gave it a chance. The coffee was brown water… but, its a diner, so I remained optimistic about the food — Huevos Rancheros, which my boyfriend and I split. The corn tortillas were old and stale. The refried beans were cold and flavorless. The potatoes seemed old and were cold. Overall, everything seemed bland and old. On the bright side, the salsa on the eggs was pretty good and the avocado was fresh. I’m glad we opted to split one meal but in hindsight, we should have returned the food and left. The location is so good and the shopping center is so busy, its a shame this space is wasted. They even have a full bar and a patio! It could be so great if the food and service was up to par. I honestly don’t know how they stay in business. The drive to Brian’s, Bills or Hash House is SO worth it.

This place is the definition of milquetoast: nothing wrong with it, but nothing great. We got the burrito grande and bacon quesadilla which seemed like«safe» choices. The burrito meat was reminiscent of a home cooked beef stew and without the wet sauce was quite dry albeit soft. Bacon quesadilla was as expected, almost tasting like pizza and with the smothering of guacamole and sour cream, enjoyable enough. I must concur with reviewers that the beans are nothing to write home about, perhaps even lacking in salt. Would I come back if I was craving some legit Mexican? Definitely not. But for sustenance, meh, it’ll do pig.

The location of this place can get really busy during the lunch hour, so plan accordingly. Once we walked in we were seated immediately, but it took a while to get drinks and chips and salsa. The salsa was a little too spicy for me but probably just fine for anyone else(can’t do spicy). Once we ordered it was about 25 minutes before our food came out. Much too long for our short lunch break. I ordered the tostada/enchilada combo, and it was just alright. The rice and beans were okay, but the tostada fell apart within seconds. The meal was much too watery or something. Enchilada was pretty good, the sauce was very tasty. I might come back and try something else here. They have a very nice looking place, some flat screens and the décor is nice, wish the food was just as good.
