MoMA PS1

Met my friend at 345 pm. DJ started a twerking contest that three more than happy girls parktook in. Hope they already got into a good college, or they’re already instagram sensations. My friend and I darted straight for the food and drinks by the wading pool you can dip your feet in. We ordered falafel on a pita which was quite good except the falafel was very hard, like it had been sitting for a bit, 2 for 16 $. Then we ordered drinks, purple monster had tequila, sour patch had vodka, then we had bourbon and mint. We played a drinking game where we had to drink every time we saw someone take a selfie, so you know how that goes. The crowd was sparse until about 530 and by that point it had switched to house music which was quite good. We entered the exhibit and only the first floor was open. In a nutshell the installations were about industrial workers who got to live out their fantasies by dressing like their favorite animé or virtual characters either at work or in the city, meant to demonstrate how the line of reality and video game lives are blurred. I think. I’m no artistic expert, it was interesting but not my thing. Crowd was well dressed, mostly hipsters, mostly 20 something’s. I would return for the vibe. Loss of one star for the too tough falafel and twerking contest. I don’t care if that makes me sound old, bah humbug.

Only came here once as my field trip in my elementary school years. We were followed by a guide, explains about the artworks.

Monthly parties are fun. Music and fun crowd. Intriguing art work, sometimes wonderful, sometimes a bit conceptual.

I am on the fence for this museum, there are some creative pieces and exhibits and then there are some that I can’t understand. Maybe it is too abstract for me and not my taste of art?
But I still had a good time and the wall art and doodles are beautiful. The museum building itself is so unique being a school, they left the doors and rooms as they were. I felt like I was walking around in my old high school. If you peak out the right window, you can see the New York skyline.

I came for the opening of the Cao Fei exhibit, on the first Sunday in April. I don’t know if MOMA PS1 is always free, but it was that day. We loved getting to explore the creative and interesting exhibits in the funky space (reminded me of an old school or hospital from like the 20s). There was also this great outdoor space, where I think they hold concerts or other outdoor events in the summer. This day, they had a spacious white tent (heated, thank god) where we got to hear Cao Fei speak and listen to the Notorious MSG. Will definitely be back — next time, I’d couple the visit with a trip to either Mu Ramen or Casa Enrique.

I blame myself for not checking reviews prior of going and not checking if there were any special exhibitions on display. Pros: free for New Yorkers, close to public transportation, so much potentials space wise. I’ve heard it’s a great place during the summer. Cons: Art well the lack of it. Roaches and newspaper in the resin is probably something I have to grow into decades from now but by that time it be classic for now it’s just way too contemporary and avant garde for me. Definitely a place to visit though if you’ve got time to waste and an unlimited metrocard.

What an awesome space and museum located right near the 7. The art may not be for everyone, but I think it’s worth a shot to check out the vast space and many exhibits.
I went during their Night at the Museum (which was a ton of fun) and they were doing their Greater New York exhibit (which had many memorable and forgettable pieces). I think going during the Night at the Museum is definitely the best possible experience.

I used to go to MoMA PS1 more often when I lived in Greenpoint and could go with my roommates or on my own. If you are a fan of contemporary art and more experimental art, I highly recommend visiting MoMA PS1 in Long Island City. Admission is free if you went to the MoMA in Midtown within 2 weeks and have your ticket, but I’d recommend even going to MoMA PS1 on its own.
You get to see some very progressive, contemporary art in a unique setting — a converted school building. There are four levels (three floors and the basement). The exhibits curated there are always changing; it doesn’t have a permanent collection. MoMA PS1’s programming also covers a wide range of media — from exhibition pieces to architecture to music to performance art.
Even if you aren’t a fan of contemporary art, I would recommend at least visiting once to see what’s up.

Museum is my comfort place whenever I feel low. Upon walking in, my mood has suddenly change. It is super warm inside, it is just what I need for today, timing for a frigid temperature outside (windy 32 degree Fahrenheit).
The museum is located in a three floor + basement «old school» building. Contrary to some other reviewers, I did like the vibes of the museum. A classic art center displaying contemporary arts. The contrast makes it appealing to me. The arts displayed are not as artistically of what you could see from the affiliated MoMA. I am telling you ahead of time not to expect high when you visit. Somehow, it presented some arts that could get your attention.
There are two galleries that I have enjoyed:
On the first floor, a gallery displays arts made of resins, glass, rocks, pigments, gypsum and other scraps in the middle while framed photos of LIC modern buildings are hanged in the wall. I assumed that the artist wants show to the viewers that his sculptures has resemblance to the modern buildings. How cool is that?
On the third floor, a gallery displays an art (The Ramble at Central Park) that made of oil and enamel on linen and combined with video projection technology showing a recurring appearance of the dog that runs through the tunnel towards the viewer. That is so neat!
The museum has book store and café that you could hang out after the visit.
The rooftop is not open to the public during the season. I heard that they scheduled performances during regular season.
In honor of NYC artist and the museum’s 40^th anniversary, The Anna Maria and Stephen Kellen Foundation is offering free admission to all NYC residents until October 2016. Just show a proof of address and you’ll have an hour and half browsing at minimum to what this museum offers.

Liked the Gold/​Tunnel exhibit by Donald Moffett — pretty gold, I waited for the dog to come up on the projected image but couldn’t see him (update: went back and I saw the dog!!)
Also fascinating to me was the Curbside Garbage exhibit by Stewart Uoo where the artist used glossy paper bags (Hollister, Coach, A&F, etc.) and mixed it with cockroaches (gross) and pigeon feathers (gross) and resin and made a beautiful image of curbside garbage. I love nice new paper shopping bags and it was fascinating to see it all together.
Greg Parma Smith’s work was fascinating too! Beautiful! And Gina Beavers’ 3-​D art. Also, there was a Pied Piper exhibit by Sergei Tcherepnin with sounds and little zinc rats — fun to listen to and read about.
I don’t know the first thing about art. So modern art for me is like listening to another language, I don’t get it. Heck, I don’t get the blurbs that spell out what the art is about.
But I know I like looking at colors, textures, shiny materials, and beautiful people, so it was a nice visit after being dismissed for jury duty at the LIC courthouse. Eat at the dinette!
I liked some more than others. Like random cloths glued together and hanging from a string or one-​colored paper mounted and framed, not really my thing.
Maybe art is what you make it. Are there rules? Who knows. I couldn’t tell.
They didn’t have a rule about educators but when I asked, the girl at the desk was kind enough to let me enjoy the museum for free.

Like a fashion house, MoMA PS1 is an institution that renews itself every time you visit it. It is also probably the only museum in NYC where you can find outdoor, live, experimental performances. PS1 does not have permanent collections. It is a unique exhibit space for contemporary creators of art– such as DJs, dancers, curators, and thinkers. Some remarkable exhibitions in the past include Maria Lassnig and Mike Kelley.
You never know what can happen in the courtyard. The open courtyard in PS1 is the weekly host for contemporary sculptures, architectures, and performances. Besides general admission, you will have to buy another ticket in advance for live music and lecture series. They happen outdoor in summer, and in the white Dome when the season gets chilly. The most interesting thing about this place is that their contemporary art collection is housed inside an old 100+ year old school that was converted. Walking up and down the stairwells here reminded me of my elementary school days. The art itself is nothing you wouldn’t find inside the modern art museums in Manhattan. In fact, a lot of the art here is actually pieces of junk that have been mashed together, left in big empty room and called art. The admission price is only suggested, so pay whatever you want.

It was fun once but I do not believe I would go back or suggest it for tourists. Not for kids. Maybe better for the twenty something crowd.

This has got to be one of my favorite museums in all of nyc. All of the art in the museum is contemporary art. I’ve been to the other contemporary art museums in nyc — moma and Whitney — and they were somewhat boring. Their art is much more conservative, safe choices. They have the stereotypical modern art like a canvas that is all blue. Then people walk by and are like wow this is dumb! I could’ve painted that in 5 mins!
Ps1 has much more interesting art. Almost all of the art was very interesting and eye catching and I didn’t even get to see the whole museum! Also the museum building itself is very cool. It’s an old school and is very industrial with lots of random rooms. It’s not all perfectly laid out like the modern architect designs museums. I was interested the whole time.

I’m not majorly versed in art, but I can definitely appreciate it and MoMA PS1 delivers a refreshing array of emerging artists.
This old school turned hub for art, utilizes the different rooms to exhibit a wide range of artists. A lot of the things showcased, you’re either going to get or not get, but that’s just the experience of art in general. Make sure to check out the stairwells as you’ll also see some slightly hidden finds.
If you’re hoping to venture off Manhattan, this is a must for any art appreciator or enthusiast. Helpful Tip: make sure to save your ticket from MoMA as it provides free entry.

It is a hit or miss visiting PS1 MoMA. Like a box of chocolate you never know what you get until you get inside. Sometimes it is a pleasant surprise and sometimes it is a disappointment which is the way art is.
My big hangup (or my 3-​star rating) is not the art but facilities like the dark stairs and the hot stuffy rooms.
Some of the staircases are not well lit and it was very uncomfortable visiting some rooms that felt like 100+ degree temperature. Some people were just running out before they pass out.
After the check-​in station there was a long walkway with a set of stairs at the end and no indication of optional elevator for handicapped visitors.
Note: They still have the free visit with proof of NYC resident.

El PS1 es un hermoso museo dependinte del MoMA que se encuentra en Long Island City –a unas paradas de subte de Manhattan-​, el cual resulta uno de los lugares más interesantes para ir a ver arte en New York.
Esta coqueta galería de arte cuenta con varios salones dedicados a artistas independientes y otros con obras realmente raras e interesantes. Desde instalaciones, performances y distintos tipos de esculturas, pinturas y distintas exposiciones audiovisuales que son realmente llamativas.
Posta que darse una vuelta por el PS1 es todo un placer y un gran paseo para los que son amantes del arte. El lugar también cuenta con distintos talleres, una elegante librería que también vende distintos productos y merchandising, en tanto que uno de los lujos de este espacio es una confitería bastante bonita e ideal para pasar un rato tras la finalización del recorrido. En fin, uno de esos lugares un tanto secretos y ocultos, pero que son sumamente agradables e imperdibles.

The indoor space is superb for displaying art — large open rooms, with great natural light from big windows. MOMA has done a great job using the space– displaying and creating art that interacts with the architecture.
The outdoor space was not being used for art when I went, which was a letdown.
Most disappointing was the service. I found the attendants at the entrance to be rude, and I found some of the docents to be unhelpful. I think this contributed to what I felt was an overall cold vibe to the museum.

This is food for mind and creativity. A place worth going annually in New York, especially if you live in Queens. The exhibition is all modern, fun, inspiring and life changing. I tried their café too and I liked the food, a little pricy though.

Redeemed my free IDNYC membership here which was pretty unnecessary because they don’t give you anything, you just show your ID each time and they don’t keep a list of expiration (and only charge suggested donation otherwise).

Don’t see what all the rave is about with Saturday Warm ups. $ 20 just for entry to stand within concrete walls and stand (only a few seats on a staircase) on rocks to listen to so so DJing? No one was dancing maybe 1 or 2 headboppers at most. Got there at 3:40 and was told the exhibits were closed, very disappointing thus making the $ 20 admission fee not worth it. There’s a line for drink tickets then a line to actually purchase a drink. Mediocre falafel food available inside. Best bet is to buy food/​drink from a cart outside before you go in. The bathrooms are unisex and there is little privacy for men using the urinals. Young hippie crowd like early 20s. Seemed more like a «see and to be seen crowd.» My BF said he’s been going for a few years but the quality and crowd has taken a down turn. Would not return.

This review is strictly for the bookstores, both of which I visited yesterday. The larger one — and it’s not very large — is inside the museum, so you need to get a sticker from the admissions desk inside the smaller bookstore if you’re not visiting the museum itself.
The smaller bookstore at the entrance has a fairly good selection of books and it also has a great selection of art magazines. The larger bookstore has a pretty good selection within the constraints of a rather small space.
The young women (one/​each) working at the bookstores were *very* pleasant. Also, there was a wonderful aroma emanating from the M. Wells Dinette.

I’ve been going religiously to Warm Up now for over 15 years — yes, I am totally dating myself, and yes, I’m an old curmudgeon. But seriously, the cool kids have gone elsewhere.
The upstairs second floor and third floor galleries now close at 4pm! So unless you arrive at 3pm, you won’t be able to view the entirety during Warm up. The public hydroponic container garden sculpture piece was interesting, but was less impactful or even that impressive. Past years have had more interesting sculptural pieces, with more architectural elements encouraging the interaction of the public — think wading pools, sprayers, sitting areas, etc. I guess the installation budgets must have gone down?
Music was also a bore. The last 2 djs featured minimal techno — which is usually a good thing — but with a constant buildup that led to nothing. The crowd wasn’t feeling it either. The dance floor was pretty mellow. More selfie taking, than dancing.
price of admission is ridiculous now: $ 20. Beers at $ 8. And you get far less in return. I will probably start going to Brooklyn Mirage to get my dance fix.

Two words: Love it! This museum features new art work every year. New artists feed our imagination with new and uplifting ideas, paintings, drawings, interior design, sculptures, and movies. A very artsy place to be, you get to see some of the cutting edge arts from all around the world.
The front lawn displays grand artwork for everyone to enjoy. This sculpture you can walk around and marvel at how large and unique it looks. You can almost interact with it — with limitations, of course.
PS 1 Warm up hosts global musical artists to put you into the mood for clubbing later on. Wander around the museum. Every classroom-​turned-​into-​a-​gallery features different artists. This seems more practical for it makes easier for people to focus on the art.
On the first floor, there is a bar that serves alcoholic and non-​alcoholic drinks. You can rest in the dining area and listen to the music from popular bands/​DJ playing from the outside. PS 1 still uses some of the student desks! A firm reminder that this locale welcomed many students in the past.
PS 1 is free if you live in the area. Bring your ID and get your bracelet so you can go in and out of the Warm-​up. If you don’t live around the area, no worries. Get your tickets on the web.
I love this place. Convenient to restaurants, it makes for a fun Saturday event.

Came here last summer with family to check out an exhibit. There are student discounts so be sure to bring your student ID if you have one. It’s not that large of a venue; you will have to take stairs to get to all the levels. Great museum nonetheless, so if you have the chance make a visit here.

I’ve visited this museum over the years.
First I will say that the art here may not be for everyone. When I first visited, in 2002, they had an exhibit of video art. One of the videos was a continual loop of Linda Carter transforming into Wonder Woman. I just scratched my head and thought, «Uh… okay…»
However, another room had art from a Chinese artist who had spent time with a Shaker community in Maine. The artist (I wish I could remember his name) created pieces based on Shaker furniture (simple and utilitarian) mixed with aspects of Zen.
When I visited last week, they had an exhibit of ceramic and glass marionettes that was simply amazing. Also, they had done a large room so that it looked like the MC Escher drawing of the room with many staircases, going in many directions.
The people who work in the various rooms are very helpful, and also very eager to answer any questions you may have.
If you have a chance, I’d definitely recommend visiting this smaller, edgier outpost of the MoMA in Queens.

An old school school building, it’s perfect for large scale art occupying tall rooms.
Easy walk from a few trains.
I’ve seen underground, overground and international art shows here. One was an amazing free outdoor performance of a Japanese artist I saw first, accompanied by pianist Cecil Taylor at underground venue in a small town in Japan. I found the artist had collaborated with other visual artists I know as well as personal friends.
The art world is an ecosystem. Individual artists digest their lives and the world around. They make work from that. Individuals, galleries and museums consume the result in an economic and temporal value system.
But ultimately each viewer’s perception is the ultimate value. The more art you see to educate yourself, the more value to you. What you think good is the the ultimate good.
If you are in NYNY you have plenty of art experience opportunities. I love the super personal private events found by artist friends. I love the old time museums. Keep PS1 on the radar for the inbetween.

the best part of summer in the city starting? WARMUP TIME!
PS1 Warmup happens every Saturday of the summer, beginning sometime in June. 100s of weirdos (and sometimes, their kids) gather to dance and drink to funky beats.
Great place to make friends, run into friends, and lose your friends.
Something really great about being drunk in an elementary school. The drinks are moderately priced and NOT cash only as some think (you can go to inside bar for CC machines). Make sure you arrive early enough to view art installations, these end at 5pm I believe.
Great food. Even better crowd and AWESOME music.
Add this to your NY to-​do list if you haven’t been. Nothing quite like breaking a friend’s Warmup virginity. Minds are blown every time: D

You should try this great place many artists show off.

Das PS1 zeigt eher zeitgenössische Kunst und ist wesentlich kleiner als das MoMa, gefällt mir aber besser. Ichhabe ein paar tolle Ausstellungen gesehen.
Mit einer MoMa Eintrittskarte kann man umsonst rein (ist auch auf dieser vermekrt) und ist nur drei Stationen mit dem E-​Train entfernt. Ansonsten ist die «suggested donation» 5 USD für Erwachsene, für Studenten sogar nur 2 USD — absolut fair. Wenn man nett fragt, kommt man bestimmt auch umsonst rein.
Der Museums-​Shop ist nicht der Beste in dem ich war, aber es gibt nette Dinge. Im Sommer kann man sich in den Innenhof/​Skulpturengarten setzten und einen Kaffee oder was Anderes trinken. Es gibt auch Snacks.
Sollte man auf einen New York Trip berücksichtigen und man kommt mal aus Manhattan raus.
