Fern’s Garden is a showcase for the hand made creations of hundreds of artisans. Only American and ethically made products are featured, with a huge selection of inspiring items at under $ 20. Featured departments include wind chimes, jewelry, Zen, toys, greeting cards, bird houses and feeders, wall art, garden art, books and vases. Also a very large selection of items with encouraging words, and a kid-​powered toy department where nothing requires batteries.

History

Established in 2000.

Fern’s Garden was born out of owner Fern Solomon’s 25 years of experience in the American gift industry as the maker of Jacob’s Musical Chimes. As the flood of overseas imports forced her fellow artisans to downsize and close their businesses, she decided to take action. She opened Fern’s Garden as a venue for the vanishing American artisan and a place to support Fair Traded, imported art and craft.

Fern’s mission is to educate the community to understand the hidden costs involved in supporting the low wages paid to many laborers abroad. The jobs that used to put food on the tables of American workers have gone overseas. The well paid manufacturing jobs Americans used to enjoy have been replaced by low paid jobs in the service industry, ironically even in the very big box stores that are offering all those savings.

By supporting both the American artisan at home and Fair Trade abroad, Fern’s Garden customers are making a start at solving this problem.
