History

Established in 2003.

Canals & Trails Credit Union was established in 1959 as Lockport Schools Credit Union. As the community grew and the population expanded, Lockport Schools Credit Union changed its name to Tri-​Township Schools Federal Credit Union. In addition to serving school districts in Lockport, Romeoville, Bolingbrook, Crest Hill, Homer Glen, Lemont, and Plainfield, the credit union also serves many local businesses and government groups.

In 2002, the credit union underwent a major change in our field of membership. In order to grow and thrive in the future, the credit union converted from a federal charter to a state charter and then obtained a community charter. In an era of financial institutions mergers, Canals & Trails Credit Union is committed to remaining an independent financial institution that provides high quality service to our members.

I’ve always have had excellent service here. My family has had accounts here for close to 50 years and never once have any of us had an issue. We’ve all used vehicle or signature loans here at some point and I’ve never had any problems or «surprises» like fees/​charges. The credit union is the place to go when you want to save money (they pay better than the bank) and the general day to day banking service is much better than any bank I’ve seen for a very long time as all the banks that were decent are now gone. There have been times when I have had a question that wasn’t able to be answered immediately but they’ll find the answer and give you a call back (banks don’t do that anymore). They do have online banking and an app as well so it’s really a lot more accessible than it once was. It’s not as advanced as the national bank apps but it’s just as easy to check balances and make transfers. It would be nice to have mobile check deposit but going to see Nancy and Lorraine is actually a nice experience (and they actually know what they’re doing). Parking is scarce at the building and there’s no drive up window but it’s certainly not enough to get me to choose a big bank over Canals and Trails.

Everytime I call I get pleasant customer service, and they’re respectful and always helpful. I’ve never encountered bad service and I’ve been banking here over 10 years. I’ve gotten car loans, credit cards, and christmas account. Janet was helpful with me to put me on a budget. Going with a credit union you truly get the one on one service and Canals and Trails is a perfect example of that kind of service.

Terrible place. They might give people loans with less than perfect, or even good credit, but they will make out like a bandit in the process, so dont cry for them. PLEASE read the fine print, and ask questions. They charge DAILY INTEREST on top of the monthly interest, so your 12% interest car loan, is really more like 19% interest. Also, they will sweetly ask you if you would like to pay weekly, to break up the payments, like they are doing YOU a favor, but actually, this just grants them more interest, and they never adjust the loan, so it never gets paid off any more quickly, due to the fact that youre paying weekly, instead of monthly. Bob puts on an act like hes a befuddled old man, who has no answers, Janet is just pure mean and nasty to deal with, looks down her nose at you, talks down to you like youre a nobody. Nancy, however, is a sweet lady. Dont let these people rob you. Spend your hard earned money somewhere else.

I just can’t possibly say enough nice things about this establishment and the wonderful people who work here! They take the time to get to know you, they recognize you and greet you by name when you come in, they are all very knowledgeable, honest and extremely helpful as well!
I never realized just how much money these greedy profit-​hungry Banksters have practically stolen from me throughout the years. I only wish I had l joined a Credit Union a LONG time ago! I’d definitely have much more money now. Canals and Trails Credit Union doesn’t «fee» you to death, nor charge you up the wazoo for every single service they provide (as all the banks do)! Credit Unions actually ENCOURAGE you to SAVE your money, get and stay out of debt, and become financially secure.
Canals and Trails Credit Union offers an ATM/​Debit card, just about any service any banks nearby provide (well, except conning you out of your own money every chance they get), many different types of accounts to chose from and different programs available to help you be financially responsible.
In the entire history of U.S. credit unions, taxpayer funds have NEVER been used to bail out a credit union!
