Lone Star Gun Range

Came here the other day with my boyfriend to try and find the best handgun That would be the best fit for me. It was about a 40 or so minute drive from Austin. The first thing I noticed when we got here was the friendliness of the staff. The two men working inside were very nice but also quite professional and really laid out the rules clearly .
The second great thing about the range is how affordable it is. I rented two different guns and the first one you rent is $ 10 and every one after is $ 5! (not including ammunition of course). General range fee was very reasonable and included the entire day, not just by hour .
The best part about this range in my opinion is that it is outdoors. I personally love outdoor ranges and so that was a deal breaker for me .
Even on a Friday the range was not uncomfortably crowded which was wonderful. They have a few different areas so that helped. Overall I would for sure recommend this range and would love to come back !

I brought my nephews who are teenagers. Guns can be intimidating to me. The guys were stern, thankfully, but friendly and super cool. I became uncle of the decade after dropping $ 200 on guns, ammo, and hours and hours of time. Was worth it to get from off Call of Duty.

Lone Star gun Range is ok but needs improvement.
1. Staff needs to get out of the shack and have a little situational awareness to meet customer needs.
2.Target staplers are almost always either broken or out of staples. Pain in the ass.
3. The ISO containers used to store target frames are full of broken frames or on some occasions there are not any ready for use. THERE SHOULD ALWAYS BE COMPLETE USABLE FRAMES READY FOR USE BY CUSTOMERS.
4. A brass pickup has never been conducted. PICK UP THE SPENT BRASS. The range is sloppy.
5. MOST IMPORTANT. STAFF NEEDS TO ENFORCE THE RULES. I CANNOT TELL YOU HOW MANY TIMES A CEASE FIRE HAS BEEN CALLED AND YET PEOPLE REMAIN ON THE LINE EITHER LOADING MAGAZINES OR DOING WHATEVER. WHEN A CEASE FIRE IS CALLED EVERYONE SHOULD BACK OFF THE LINE. THIS IS AN ACCIDENT WAITING TO HAPPEN. BACK TO COMMENT #1.
6. SEPARATE THE RIFLE AND PISTOL RANGE. It is so annoying to be shooting a pistol and some yahoo who just bought his new AR shows up with the intent of just ripping through magazines of ammo at the 15 yard line without any concern for the brass he is dumping in your face. Pain in the ass.
The other complaint I have is not with the range but with the quality of some of the shooters that come to the range. Some really firearm illiterate people come here to shoot. BE CAREFUL. I would strongly advise that each shooter bring his own IFAK (Individual first aid kit). The range is somewhat remote and I am not sure what medical response times are or if the staff on hand has adequate trauma kits or first aid training. I just don’t know how prepared the staff are for medical emergencies but I wouldn’t bet my life on it.

Pros: Awesome place to shoot, out in the open, good prices. Used my bf’s AR15 and was pleased with the experience.
Cons: shooting stalls are pretty close to each other, some of the mags from the AR15 we were using were cutting close into the space of the person next to us so we had to scoot up a lot so it wouldn’t hit him which was inconvenient. Also be prepared to go on an unpaved road for a mile!

The guys here are polite, funny, and informative. This place is perfect for us newbies looking to work on our skills. Would highly recommend!

I cannot leave a review that truly represents what a great experience we had at Lone Star Gun Range. I was out in Austin for a bachelor party and we decided it would be a good idea to go to the range and shoot some stuff that isn’t legal in California. We had a group of 10, most of whom had never shot before, but Sandra and the staff at Lone Star ran everyone through a detailed safety course and made everyone feel comfortable with the firearms. We had a range master with with us the entire session to help or answer any questions that may arise. We shot the SOCOM, AK47, AR-​15, Dragunov and the .50AE Desert Eagle. Shoot the Desert Eagle if you get the chance! After we finished shooting, the staff at Lone Star went far out of their way to ensure we had a great time and got home safely. If you are in Austin and looking for a place to shoot, look no further than Lone Star Gun Range.

Staff Anthony is making up rules… website says open until an hour before dusk. He stated today that no one is allowed one hour before closing…6:15 pm in August is nowhere near dusk. I think my annual membership will not be renewed.

Awesome setup. Friendly staff and great service. They have a nice selection of rental firearms. The patrons are always cool. Even when it gets packed, you can find a spot to shoot. I’ve been a few times and plan to go many more. Also, thanks for filling in those sinkholes on the road in.

I’m a long time attender but first time reviewer for Lone Star Gun Range. The facilities boast a 100 yard rifle range, two pistol ranges, a skeet range, and a plinking range just for 22 caliber long guns. Parking is adequate, as is their indoor reception area where you check in and can rent or buy guns, ammo, and targets. I do recommend buying targets elsewhere and bringing them with you because their $ 1.00 per target is a pretty high markup considering you can buy them for about 25 cents online in bulk. But for an occasional shooter this wouldn’t be a problem to buy them their.
As for the ranges themselves, you are allowed to rapid fire and draw from the holster but you really are quite limited in the tactics you’re allowed to perform. No shooting on the move or in different positions, etc. You can shoot your rifle at the pistol range but you cannot shoot a handgun at the rifle range. You’re further limited at the rifle range because all you’re allowed to do is shoot from the seated position. That pretty much only allows you to plink or practice slow accuracy shots. This can get boring for a tactical shooter that likes to move. But it is what it is. Make sure you have excellent hearing protection on the rifle range because the aluminum awning over the benches can cause some mind numbing vibration with all those rifles blasting at once. I had to double up with foam inserts as well as my earmuffs.
Be wary of the occasional young city dweller hipsters that come in groups to shoot and may not know what they’re doing. They seem to show up every time I go at least. The staff are pretty laid back and there are no range nazis there, but the shooters pretty much police themselves. It works out; just know the rules or the other shooters will certainly remind you.
Overall, I give this place high marks for atmosphere and a relaxed but fun time. If you need more room to shoot such as a tactical bay for various shooting drills and shooting your guns on the move though, this is not the place. I recommend Best of the West shooting range for that.

I was a loyal customer here, emphasis on WAS !!! I wanted to go skeeting on Father’s Day so had my wife call for hours, the guy told her that the throwers were down, one was broken and one needed TLC, per the guy. So I decided to wait. I call today to ask if they’ve been fixed. The guy that answered stated there was nothing wrong with the range. So I said, «Really, cause last month a guy told my wife the… CLICK! The jerk hangs up on me!
I will take my business elsewhere, don’t care if I have to drive to Houston to find decent shooting. NEVER AGAIN!!!

My boyfriend and I came here as two novices who knew nothing about guns, and left as two badasses who just shot a bunch of different guns.
At first, I was really nervous that the staff would get impatient with us since we didn’t know anything, but they were super helpful and patient. They told us step by step how to do everything. I do wish they told us the prices for the ammo… it really racked up. But they were probably happy they were making a ton off of us haha.

Great place to shoot! Friendly, safe environment to send rounds down range! And crazy affordable! This is the ONLY place I shoot at because other places are expensive and unpleasant. This place is a true shooter’s oasis! Stay safe, stay 2^nd amendment!

I stopped in today to increase my familiarization of my 9 mm. The range appears to be professionally managed. As for rules, there are a lot, but over-​all the staff treats customers like grown-​ups. If you’re doing unsafe things you’ll be asked to leave. Otherwise, you simply show up, pay your $ 15, sign in, and shoot.
Since the range caters to everyone from experienced shooters to folks who have never touched a gun, there were all different types of people. On one side a hipster looking guy, and on the other a Spanish-​speaking family with kids.
Customers themselves are expected to be nice, and to be responsible to call cease-​fires. It happened about every 20 minutes or so, giving me plenty of time to staple up another target, load my magazines, and prepare to once again send all my rounds downrange.
The range’s only downside is the mud. I came away needing to scrape a lot of it off my boots. But compared to some range experiences I had during my 12 years in the Army, this was pretty darn clean. That said, some mulch or gravel might help a little.
The shop is decent. There are glass counters with myriad weapons to rent in case you don’t bring one. There’s a stack of paper targets for a dollar a piece. And there are friendly, helpful staff members waiting to make sure you have a great and safe time.
They charge $ 25 for a box of 50 rounds of 9 mm ammo, which is actually pretty reasonable. They don’t take advantage of the fact that you’re sitting there nowhere near Cabela’s or Walmart.
I will definitely visit Lone Star again if I find myself in the Lockhart area. It’s among the best.

Since I first visited in 2008, I have not found a better range in the Austin area. The team has worked hard to constantly improve the range and handle the big increase in traffic. Throughout all this, they have been extremely diligent with safety.

If you want to go shooting, this is the place!
You can shoot pistol, shotgun and rifle in the great outdoors under the shade. They have a huge selection of rental guns. For new shooters, they also have a number of class packages.
Go shoot in the morning then take the quick drive to Lockhart for lunch. It makes for a fun Texas day!

Good range! One of my favorites in the area. Down side with any good range, it’s popular! If you are going go early or go late. Week day afternoons are great as well. Staff is normally very friendly, but have had one run in. Have a great set up but no place to shoot buckshot. They also have a wide variety of firearms to rent which is also a nicety.

Ever shot a gun before? I sure as hell hadn’t until yesterday. Due to the fact that I’d been in Austin for over three weeks and had only tried three of the four things that I classify as Austin-​esque (if that’s even a word) we were on a mission. We had already experienced the famous Texas barbecue, loitering around food trucks and lounging at local watering holes. It was time to try our hand at shooting. Like in the olden Western times, right?
Since we were in Austin, Lockhart was a great choice distance wise. After a quick 40 minute car ride we arrived at the Lone Star Gun Range. As we made our way down the gravel road leading up to the range we were quickly informed that in fact, we had reached our destination via the symphony of gun shots that hung in the air. This was going to be good.
After parking the car and gawking at the folks firing AK-​47s and all kinds of weaponry I could and still cannot identify we headed over the office. While there we read the instructions of the range, said a one sentence oath about not firing during a ceasefire and then we were off to orientation. Orientation consisted of a 10 minute speech from a very knowledgable man who actually explained things very well. After picking out our weapon of choice — a Glock — we gave it a go by practicing loading the gun a few times with some fake bullets and that was it. it was time to shoot.
Ah, I almost forgot. How much does this day of revelry cost you ask? I’m glad you mentioned that. It wasn’t the cheapest excursion but it didn’t break the bank either. Below is a cost breakdown for two people shooting but sharing one gun (which seemed to be the norm on the range). We spent a total of $ 66 and spent a couple of hours at the range.
— Day Pass — $ 15 per day per person.
— Gun Rental — $ 10 for one gun. Also worth mentioning, the second gun would have been $ 5.
— Target — $ 1 for a single target.
— Box of Ammo — Our box of 9 mm ammo cost $ 23.31.
Always felt safe at this gun range and everything was explained so well to us even through we were newbies.
So the moral of the story … if you’re ever in Lockhart, Texas and want to fire some guns … Lone Star Shooting Range is the place to be!

First off, thanks to the directions on the website, finding this place was super easy, helped me avoid all the tolls that Google Maps would have taken me through. Once I got there the man behind the counter, also named Louis, was really helpful.
Lone Star has a wide array of weapons to rent and Louis knew everything about each one I inquired about and was able to show me how to operate them as well.
The prices were really reasonable as well!
I have a friend that’s moving down here soon and I plan on taking him here first thing!
If you live in Austin or the surrounding area, why not go to an awesome outdoor range on a beautiful day? Well worth the drive for sure!

This is a very nice range with several different firing areas to accommodate both rifles and handguns. The shop has a good selection of rental weapons so you can try out something new, and there are plenty of targets to choose from if you didn’t bring your own. Ammunition is also available, but I didn’t get a feel for the prices or what calibers they offer. They also teach concealed carry classes on a dedicated firing line.
A couple of minor gripes: They don’t allow handguns on the rifle range, which is kind of a pain in the butt if you want to fire both types of weapon. Also, the firing lines are not controlled, meaning you don’t get ceasefires at regular intervals. Depending on how many people are shooting, it may take a while before you can go downrange to inspect or repair your targets.
My favorite thing about coming to this range is that you can duck into nearby Lockhart for a barbecue lunch afterward. Check ‘em out!

What can I say that hasn’t been said already?
As a recent transplant from NYC, I was eager to go to the gun range asap!
The drive out to Lockhart was both smooth and scenic, I got to take in the lovely Texas farmlands and stopped to take some great pictures.
Once we arrived to the range itself, I was expecting to pay the usual $ 10 – 12 the hour I’m used to paying back home. Do NOT misunderstand when they tell you the price… ITS FOR THE WHOLE DAY!!! I couldn’t believe my ears and happily paid the fee, bought some targets and was off on my way. During weekdays its not as packed as weekends (that’s a given anywhere), so when I was there on a Sunday it was rather busy on the gun ranges so I decided to try out their archery range. It’s small and impromptu, with only a few hay bales and a single target hog but somehow for me it only gave me more of that at home, country feeling that the rest of the range gives. All the regulars at the rifle range and pistol range were kind, patient and informative with this New Yorker in their midst. I felt very welcome on my first day and have at all my subsequent visits.
At Lone Star you wont get any frills or tacticool garbage like other ranges. What you get here is what you need: a wonderful, friendly staff and a great place to shoot under the big blue skies of Texas.
You’ve made a lifelong fan and I hope to take my family when they come visit! Keep up the good work and never change!

I made it a point to go to Lone Star again, despite the distance.
Man, am I glad I did, Lone Star is king of the hill, as far as I’m concerned.
It seems like half of Austin feels that way too, a group of us went Saturday at noon, and the line to pay was almost out the door! Oddly enough, after we paid, there was plenty of space at both the pistol and rifle ranges… I’m not entirely sure where everyone went.
The prices are reasonable, the lanes aren’t terribly crowded, the range officers aren’t dicks… the entire place just has a «feel good» vibe. I struck up several conversations with folks in the lanes next to me, and even fired a rare carbine that a guy next to me had. Other places *eaglepeak* put such a huge emphasis on safety that it puts everyone on edge, and as a result the outing is much less fun.
Lone Star will be getting my shooting dollars from here on out.
