Specialties
The Catskill Art Society is a non-profit cultivating public interest, participation, and enjoyment of the arts. Through its multi-arts center, CAS explores contemporary art practices and facilitates creative and professional development for established and emerging artists. The CAS Arts Center is our 4,500+ square foot multi-disciplinary facility, with lots of natural light, loft-like ceilings, and beautiful natural bamboo flooring. It includes a designated fine arts gallery, a large multi-purpose space, a pottery studio, a painting studio, and two classrooms.
History
Established in 1971.
Founded by Charles F. Beck in 1971, the Catskill Art Society had humble beginnings in his Cooks Falls home as an increasingly popular gathering of artists and art lovers dedicated to developing and sharing their common interests. CAS incorporated as a non-profit organization in 1972 and moved to Hurleyville shortly afterward to share a building with the Sullivan County Historical Society. When Beck passed away in 1974, the organization dedicated their art gallery space to his memory. CAS continued to present exhibitions and offer classes to the public there, while at the same time broadening its multi-disciplinary programming to include music, theatre, dance, and film. Over time, its growth drove CAS to seek a space of its own.
In 2007, CAS renovated a historic building in Livingston Manor, built as the Manor Theater cinema in 1939 and showing movies through the 1970’s before seeing various uses as a general store and auction house.
