We brought several kitties, adolescent and adult Feral cats here. It is sad business for us to trap cats and bring them in — it’s sad that people don’t neuter and it was sad to spend time in here and see people surrendering pets. The staff here was wonderful and doing great work with what I imagine to be limited resources.

The staff was very friendly and accommodated us well. We picked up *Puka aka Daesha. At first she was a little timid and docile. Now that she’s in a loving home, she gets nice long walks from people who love her. She gets to meet new friends at the dog park to get socialized with other dogs.

Just adopted an Australian cattle dog lab mix from this shelter two days ago! I can’t stress enough how wonderful everyone is at this shelter! They got shots out of the way for us The day we adopted her. when an animal gets placed in their shelter, they neuter immediately, which is the right thing to do! I like this place a lot more than dumb friends league. More welcoming environment an easier process for adoption. So happy to have gotten my sweet pup here. I hope you get your animals here too!

Alright, as corny as it is, I’m pretty happy to «Yelp» about a dog shelter. Anyway, we picked up an amazing border collie mix here a few weeks ago. Our first dog (neither one of us had one growing up either), but the staff was very accommodating and helpful. The facility is very clean and the staff and volunteers were all fantastic to deal with — knowledgeable and friendly. The location along the river makes it great to take potential adoptees out for walks along the trail and it’s super convenient right off of 85.

We have had nothing but a positive experience adopting our dog. The staff is very nice and the kennels are very clean. They take such great care of the dogs and cats that live there. You can tell that the staff love the dogs and cats that are there. We adopted the perfect dog from them that we love much!

Adopted our new forever friend Moose (formerly Huckleberry: hated changing his name but we have two cats: Huxley and Halifax… that’s a lot of syllables!!!) The staff is amazing! Super knowledgeable and friendly! Animals are well cared for! I can’t imagine finding s better dog than Moose anywhere else!

The first impression I had of this humane society was that it was very clean and the animals looked happy and well cared for. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable. They’re super supportive when it comes to pit bull awareness which hits very close to home since I have a pittie of my own who is like a child to me. When the time comes to add another member to my fur family, I’ll most definitely come to Hsspv. They truly care about the well being of each and every animal that they come in contact with. Thank you Hsspv for everything you do for those who cannot help themselves.

We love this place. We came in several times to look for a second pet. The staff was always pleasant, never pushy, and very understanding. Last week we adopted a kitten that fits our family perfectly. We will definitely be back and tell everyone we know.

Been to this shelter on various occasions. Always clean and comfortable. The staff seems to take great care of the animals making sure they have clean kennels, food and treats. They let you wander through and visit with the dogs and cats. Their adoption fee includes a vet visit, spay/​neuter, chip and vaccinations. Great deal. They care about the animals and put them first. Volunteers seem happy to be there.

I don’t understand all of the negative reviews. From our experience, HSSPV is a great animal shelter. Just recently, we adopted our 1yr old pit bull mix from HSSPV and are very happy. From what we could tell, the staff takes good care of the animals, the facility is well lit and clean, plus the kennels are fairly roomy. The employees at the shelter were very nice and helpful to us during the adoption process. Thank you, HSSPV! Keep up the good work!

We have been coming to this location for months trying to find the right dog. Our daughter (14) found a dog that she fell in love with. My wife and daughter came back with our dog to ensure that they would get along and spent an 1 ½ hours getting to know the dog. They then filled out the application, no red flags. They then came back on the next day, the day the dog was available, watched another person provide an application, hung around for 1 ½ hours to be told that the other applicant would be getting the dog. When questioned how that decision was made, the person didn’t have an answer. Appears to be an arbitrary decision that some staff member gets to make. It would seem that the first applicant, if suitable would have first choice of the Animal. Definitely will not be coming back or supporting this facility in the future.

So happy with these guys! Clean facility, friendly staff, and the sweetest dog I could have ever picked! Only complaint is that they didn’t bathe her at all. She was fixed which meant I had to wait two weeks until I cleaned her I still loved on her but my fiancé has been a bit more hesitant. Other than that I had a great experience! Thanks for my new buddy

Not super satisfied with this place. We brought some donations and adopted a dog. We were told that our pup was neutered when we were looking at him and then when we decided to adopt and paying they informed me he wasn’t neutered and it’d be another $ 50 (refundable). Then when we picked him up from being neutered it was so unorganized and busy with not enough help. They gave me a folder that had animal hospital info on the back where I needed to go for his wellness visit but the address is wrong and I drove miles out of the way. The kennels were a great size for the dogs and they are walked often. The cat room was nice and big but stinky. The staff was nice but were just unorganized.

The warehouse setup is a little daunting, but the dogs are given fairly large kennels and are regularly walked by the Humane Society’s many volunteers. We fell in love with a husky/​German shepherd mix who was just the right size and temperament for us. Unfortunately, she was pending a vet review, so we couldn’t take her home. We took her for a walk around the block, filled out the application, and waited to hear what the vet had to say about her health. It turned out that the poor thing needed a hip replacement and wouldn’t be available for adoption for the foreseeable future. Although we were disappointed not to be able to welcome the dog into our home, we appreciated the level of care the facility was providing for her. It’s great to see people passionate about pets.

The staff was great and very friendly and helpful throughout the entire process. The free vet visit that came with our adoption was a huge benefit too.

HSSPV is a great NO-​KILL shelter. They take in animals other shelters throw on the euthanasia list and give them the necessary time, love and training to get them successfully adopted. The more we adopt animals from places like HSSPV the closer we get to NO-​KILL Colorado and the closer we get to no animal being put down for stupid or made reasons…

They place animals into foster homes without a rabies vaccination. YIKES! Their policy is that they do not vaccinate until the animal is adopted out. This is a public health hazard and puts the employees & volunteers in danger as well as countless people that come in contact with their animals at meet & greets. When I questioned the safety and legality of this the staff member became very rude and refused to speak to me any further. What a dangerous policy and rude, ill informed staff.

As a facility this place was busy busy for a Sunday (+1 star since the Denver shelter near downtown is NOT open Sunday to my knowledge), which was a good thing. I don’t go into shelters expecting to adopt every pet but I know that if there is competition, then the rates for adoption into homes probably goes up as well! That makes leaving without one a little easier, especially since our specifications for the dog we are looking for have more than tripled in size over the last few visits.
This facility allows you to walk past the kennels in an area connecting to the front desk foyer through a glass door labeled appropriately for what is inside. The future-​pets are snugly tucked into their own private areas with plenty of water. The space smells clean (+2 stars, I cannot even imagine HOW they DO that with so many future-​pets that are likely a bit stressed). The staff are friendly and helpful when given the opportunity to be– they were quite busy when we came. They also had other animals for adoption such as bunnies, guinea pigs and even a rooster! It was a nice building as well and I would feel comfortable adopting from them if I found the right pet for myself, my dog and my fiancé– did I mention in my tip? Bring your current pup with you for a meet and greet to make doubly sure ALL of your family members are happy with your pick.

One of the staff members was very condescending during our entire visit. She was judgmental, rude, and didn’t even let us walk a particularly active dog, because she didn’t believe he fit our lifestyle! My boyfriend runs about 3 – 7 miles per day, and prefers a more active dog– that’s why we were there.
After spending some time there, we wanted to adopt a sweet older husky mix that fit perfectly with our little family, but the same staff refused our application. It was heartbreaking.
The apartment we leased had added purebred huskies to the restricted breed list, but I found out if you want to adopt a MIX, it can be smoothed over with the office. That same staff at HSSPV wouldn’t listen.
She then started bashing my knowledge of caring for dogs, because my 6 month old Chihuahua isn’t neutered. By vet standards (I’ve asked two), he is not ready until he either lifts his leg to pee or has ‘dropped’. Neither of those have happened, so my dog is not ready yet. (my dog COULD have the surgery, but there could be a lot more health risks). The staff said she was ‘concerned’ and basically told me I couldn’t handle the dog I had now… even though professional VETS have a different opinion!
Getting the application rejected was difficult, but the thing that made me want to write the review was just how unbelievably rude that staff member was, and how she decided she knew more than veterinarians! Maybe if she weren’t so judgmental or cocky, more dogs would be adopted to good homes.
On a positive note: Since the visit, my boyfriend and I have been fostering a special needs puppy [through the Lola’s rescue foundation] who was found as a stray and abused. She has made so much more progress than anyone had anticipated because of us. Maybe our hearts were broken at HSSPV to make way for this special needs puppy in our lives, who perhaps needed us more than the older husky. :’)
