BNF Consulting

I selected BNF Consulting on the basis of the many five-​star Unilocal reviews it has received, and can report that Justin Joe, the proprietor of this one-​person company, deserves all these and more. He came to my home twice to test for mold. The second visit was necessary because the lab analyses of the first set of air samples he took showed that the mold remediation work that had been done was incomplete.
Unlike my experience with other companies I had contacted, he didn’t require or try to talk me into unnenessary tests that jack costs way up. Apart from this, his rates are very reasonable, especially compared to quotes I received over the phone from others. His bill in fact came to a bit less than half of the quote I received from the RTK Environmental Group, a relatively large and prominent testing and inspection company.
Unlike the environmental hygienist I had initially hired, Justin used state of the art equipment. Rather than opening a jar or test tube and capturing a tiny, relatively random air sample to test, he ran seventy-​five liters of air through a device that collects spores, while running a fan to stir up spores that might have settled on surfaces, and to draw air toward the testing device.
Without having to be asked, he explained everything he was doing, step-​by-​step and with great clarity. He answered all my questions in detail, while at the house and after the lab results came back. It isn’t necessary to know that this guy has a Ph. D. in nuclear engineering, to say nothing of various certificates for mold and asbestos testing, to realize he’s extremely smart and knowledgeable. I also found him to be equally scrupulous, meticulous, and painstaking, to say nothing of being very friendly and approachable.
Rather than saving a few dollars, he pays the lab a surcharge so that the results were sent to him and forwarded to me with no additional charge the day after he took the air samples.
It’s also worth mentioning that, unlikely many companies that offer environmental inspections
and testing, as well as remediation, which is an obvious conflict of interest, and should be avoided for this reason, BNF does hygienist-​work only, and is not associated with any remediation companies.
I owe a thank-​you to all those on Unilocal who gave this company the five-​star reviews that caught my attention when I was searching for a good, reasonbly priced environmental hygienist.

With regard to the three-​star review dated 3÷13÷2016, finding the exact location of hidden mold within a room is not within the capability of existing equipment. An environmental hyienist can offer guidance on where to begin searching for this, which involves exposing whatever might be hidden within walls and above ceilings, but doesn’t himself perform the demolition work that is necessary in order to locate hidden mold.

Justin responded to our request for an estimate rapidly, was very thorough, communicated his findings clearly and gave his honest opinions. We would not hesitate to use him again and would recommend his work to others. We spent around 3 ½ hours with him at the home, thoroughly inspecting the house and he was able to answer all of our questions. He performed a home inspection including Radon and Mold samples. His recommendations are conservative, but honest. His report was sent to us in a timely manner and he was available for follow up questions to which he responded to rapidly.

Note: this is my second review for Justin (first review posted on 1÷30÷16). If you’ve read my first review, you already know how impressed we were with Justin’s work ethic, thoroughness, and efficiency. Unfortunately, the first house we looked at did not work out (although lucky for us, as in retrospect, there were too many issues that concerned us about that house). Given what we thought of Justin’s work, we immediately contacted him to inspect a second house for us — which he did on February 13 — the coldest Valentine’s Day weekend on record! Once again Justin was there on time, was very detail-​oriented, patient with our questions and, perhaps most telling of his professionalism, did not rush any of the outside inspection despite the frigid temperatures. As we were under a very tight timeline for this house, Justin worked with us to get his (48 page!) report to us within 24 hours of the inspection. This proved to be very helpful in getting us to contract by the deadline with confidence in what we were purchasing. In sum, we could not be more pleased with his work. He is a highly knowledgeable, honest and objective, and is very responsive to calls and emails — even after his work is complete! We’re happy to be done with this process (for now, at least!), but would certainly have no hesitation in using him again if/​when it’s time for our next home!

Nice, professional, and has a lot of high-​tech equipment, but be cautious about hiring him for a hidden mold inspection. Air quality tests are cool, but do little for you if the source of the problem cannot be identified.
The three stars are because we got a refund. I can’t, in good conscience, give more. Mold — especially with a baby — is too much of a big deal to not be armed with as much information as possible when hiring someone.

Justin was extremely thorough in his work. He returned the report very quickly and was great to work with on-​site. Definitely recommend him for future home inspections.

This is a great case in support of why it pays to use Unilocal!My wife and I were looking to find an inspector for a house we wanted to buy in Chappaqua and did not know where to start. So we turned to Unilocal and, after reading the reviews on several inspectors, we ended up going with BNF Consulting. Justin answered my initial call bright and early on a Saturday morning. We then set up an inspection the next morning (a Sunday!), which he was more than willing to do for us. He even arrived at the house before we did and had already started doing his inspection! Once we arrived, he had me accompany him around the home so he could point out things he was finding in real time — both inside and outside of the home. He came well-​equipped with tools and equipment that allowed him to inspect everything we could imagine, and he was incredibly thorough in the process, taking his time and crawling into every nook and cranny. Along the way, he was very patient with our many questions and then was incredibly responsive to questions we had after getting his report (which was over 70 pages in length, with pictures and notes and delivered within 48 hours!). Finally, he also helped us find a septic inspector and even followed-​up up on that for us, to make sure we were satisfied and help us with questions we had about that report! To top it all off, he is very competitively priced. In sum, if you are looking for someone who really understands what to look for during an inspection who will work for you (the buyer) in an honest, objective, and detailed manner and is incredibly responsive to calls and emails, you’ve found your guy. He has our strongest recommendation.

Justin of BNF Consulting was a wonderful inspector on our forthcoming home purchase. He arrived to the home early and began with the outside of the home and then worked his way in. He openly shared his findings with us as he walked through and provided a brief verbal summary at completion. When we received his actual report, not 48 hours later, was when we were truly impressed. His attention to detail throughout the report, as well as providing photographic evidence of everything he noted, was incredibly helpful and thorough. UPDATE:
After moving into our home we had a problem with something that was missed in the home inspection. Justin responded to my email regarding it and we were able to work it out. It is important that after you work with a company that they have your back and not just disappear or give you a tough-​luck attitude. Justin will not ignore you if an issue arises and will do his best to get to resolve it and make sure you are happy.

I hired Justin to perform an inspection on a condominium I was looking to purchase. As a first time buyer, Justin walked me through all necessary steps needed for an inspection and explained everything very clearly.
