Mark’s Place

A bit out of the way but well worth it! We had Korean Chicken, the best ever. Building is not marked so just look for the picnic tables out front with all the happy customers.

If you are craving traditional no frills Hawaiian food, Mark’s is hand’s down the best on the island. Food is absolutely delicious and comes in large enough portions that you can make a 2 item combo into 2 meals. The chicken katsu was perfectly fried and the beef stew was also very flavorful.
The spam musubi is very good and a bit different as they use furikake as part of the wrapping process. I was lucky enough to have a fresh spam musubi made to order.
I would definitely continue coming back to this place if I had the chance.

My wife and I went to Mark’s for a carry out dinner. We ordered the mixed plate and also a three meat combination plate with Chicken Cutlet, Korean Chicken and Teriyaki Chicken. Everything was excellent and the portions were generous. We also had the mixed greens and the potato macaroni salad. We felt the prices were very reasonable and more on the inexpensive side for Kauai and we would definitely go back.

Local fare truly represented. Pineapple chocolate carrot cake satisfied my sweet tooth three ways. Chicken katsu was crunchy and moist. Mark’s Special is an efficient way to taste many dishes at the same time. While well done beef teriyaki is not my favorite. Flavor was great. Mac salad, green salad, noodles and rice filled out the rest of the plate lunches all island staples. Price is right. Location tucked between light industrial area is interesting.
Not gourmet fare but if you want to experience no frill local style home cooking this is a good start.

Our favorite food spot on the island! Best plate lunch, hands down. We went twice, in our 5 day stay. Classic hawaiian food plate lunch, but very well done. They have different combos daily. It is a local’s favorite, as I am told by a few people who live there.
First time we went, we had Mark’s Mixed Plate and one of the fish specials. The beef stew and katsu on he mixed plate were great, but the Korean beef was just okay, so when we went back, we ordered the beef stew and katsu combo instead, which is the same but more katsu instead of the beef. Their musubis and butter mochi are also a must!
TLDR: Best Hawaiian plate lunch!

I wish we had eaten here more than once during our week in Kauai. I’m glad I found this place on Friday, before we left on a Sunday, since they’re closed on weekends!
We spent three weeks all over Hawaii and had loco moco whenever we could — and the loco moco at Mark’s Place was the best, hands down. My husband struggled to finish his Mark’s Plate (? the combo) because it was HUGE, and he still finished the loco moco that defeated me.
I sampled some of the hubby’s food, and holy cow, the beef stew is just as good as other Unilocalers have said.
By the way, since there isn’t much seating, we took it to go and ate at our hotel at Poipu beach. The food kept very well.
I would have made the loco moco my last meal in Kauai (Mark’s is super close to the airport) if it weren’t closed on weekends!

Another awesome meal at Mark’s Place. We come here most trips to Kauai and this time didn’t disappoint. I got the loco moco, my daughter got the Korean chicken and my wife got the mixed plate of Teri beef, Katsu chicken and beef stew. We loved every bite.
The thing I like best about Mark’s is that it is good island food that is reasonably priced competitively speaking. Additionally, their servings are large so overall it’s a good value for your dollar.

Their beef stew has to be made of crack cocaine cuz it is Delicious! I mean, just crazy gooood. I would go as far as saying this is my fav plate lunch place in all of hawaii, and most likely all of usa, hands down. Mark’s is located in some inconspicuous spot in the neighborhood, but all the locals know how to get here. Conveniently, it’s also close to the airport, so always a good idea to pick up food to go b4 plane ride. My trip to Kauai was worth it just for their beef stew!

This is definitely a must when in Kauai. The place is kind of hidden. We were the first ones there as soon as they opened in the morning. We got Marks mixed plate which was enough to feed two for lunch. The beef stew dish was awesome as was the beef and sides were good too. Also got some of the butter mocha cake, which I could not stop eating.

We came back here again to try their Spam musubi (basically it is spam wrapped with white rice & seaweed). Unfortunately, they ran out of it. The chef was kind enough to make two just for us. Apparently, they usually sell this item first thing in the morning and usually runs out of them very quickly. We were going to save it as our snacks while hanging out by the beach. After taking our first bite in the car on our way back to the hotel, we both ended up taking huge bites and inhaled them in less than 10 minutes. The rice is moist, seaweed is crispy and the spam was very cooked and tasty.
Tomorrow morning, we are coming back here again just to pick up another four (at least). If you are in town, you have to try it!!!

Long story short, it’s a whole in the wall and totally worth stopping in if you want some traditional Hawaiian food! No matter what you get I think you’ll be happy and I guarantee you will leave full!
Short story long… My family and I are on the island for a family vacation at our parents time share, so we are doing a lot of cooking and eating in to save some money. While on a drive around the island my dad says that we will get back to the resort too late to cook, and asks where we want to eat. Thank goodness for Unilocal!My sister and I jump Unilocal and start looking for a «locals» place nearby to stop and try, since home cooked meals are awesome we want to try some authentic Hawaiian grub! Sadly, or maybe thankfully since it lead us to Marks, most of the restaurants we found closed around 6, and it was close to 7 on a Monday at this point. From the reviews, we were aware it was in an industrial area… No lie, you think you must have missed it along the way because there’s nothing resembling a restaurant nearby. Keep going, you’ll find it!
There’s a small parking lot for the business available to you. You walk inside to a counter where you order your food, all of which is around $ 10/​plate. There’s a rack of baked goodies and t-​shirts to purchase, a refrigerator stocked with different drinks… And that’s it! There is no where inside to eat, they serve you your food in to-​go boxes, but there’s a few uncovered picnic tables out front if you want to eat there. Nothing fancy about this place whatsoever, but I highly recommend coming by if you are in the area and in search of some local Hawaiian food. The workers knew at least 2 patrons who where there getting dinner so I felt pretty good about the decision to come here. Everything that everyone ordered (there’s 7 of us) was delish! I tried some of the beef stew, beef teriyaki, chicken katsu, and Korean chicken. I’d recommend all of them. There’s a combo plate called the Mark’s favorite or something, which comes with beef teriyaki, beef stew and chicken katsu. I got that to try it all and it was all AMAZING! Especially that beef teriyaki. The beef stew was good, beef stew is beef stew. Nothing super special about it but if you like beef stew it won’t disappoint.
All of the combo plates come with rice (white or brown, but you are in Hawaii so just go for the sticky white rice!) macaroni salad or a green salad (again, you are in Hawaii, just go for the Mac), and some chow mein-​like noodles. SO MUCH FOOD! I will most certainly be back if/​when I’m back in Kauai and will recommend Mark’s to friends and my fellow Unilocalers. It’s not fancy, it’s nothing crazy… But it’s good. And it’s filling. And it’s reasonably priced.

Such good food. I’m a mainlander and don’t know much about Hawaiian food but the teriyaki chicken was good and the Loco Moco was really super delicious. If you’re from out of town, don’t be afraid to venture off the beaten path and try this place. It’s worth the many stars its received.

Just arrived to Kauai for the very first time with my boyfriend and another couple. We are staying at the Kauai Marriott resort and started to get hungry. Boyfriend started to Unilocal to see what good places there are to eat at and we came across marks place. We decided to try it out since the reviews were good plus it was only a 15 minute drive. The drive to marks place was nice, there were some scenic views of just green. When we arrived to marks place, it was in a very secluded location, dark at night and it seemed to be in some type of industrial area. There’s a small lot for parking. The place is not very big, very mom and pop type of shop. There are benches and tables outside for people to eat and enjoy the nice weather outside. We saw a couple geckos and lizards around, but they were harmless.
On to the food, I got the marks special plate which consisted of chicken katsu, teriyaki beef, potato salad, fried noodles, rice and beef stew. I really enjoyed the food except the potato salad. My boyfriend got the loco moco which he loved and cleaned off the whole plate. My girlfriend ended up getting the chicken katsu plate, she enjoyed it but said it was a bit dry. The chicken teriyaki was delish, my friend added French fries and bacon to it. Overall, I would definitely recommend this place for anyone who is nearby and hungry for some Hawaiian food.

They’re located in the middle of this industrial neighborhood. Keep in mind that it’s designed to be a takeout restaurant since there’s no seating inside and the 2 – 3 tables outside are usually filled up or right under the sun.
I got a salad and I’m not a salad person so hear me out when I awkwardly judge it. It was fresh. Some type of green was spicy or peppery or maybe that was the dressing. Ahi was seared and fresh. If you don’t like salads don’t do what I did and try to order a salad at a place that you think will change your mind about salads. It won’t.
I did get to try katsu and teriyaki beef off of other people’s plates. It was delicious and I’d wished I’d ordered hot food instead of that salad. You can choose to be healthy and get brown rice instead of white and green salad instead of mac salad.
Prices are normal island prices.

We stopped by Mark’s Place twice on the trip since not only it was cheap (~$ 10 per entrée), it was hella good! Comes with brown or white rice and either «greeeeeens or ma-​ca-​roni sa-​lad»… I love the islander drawl. My husband loved the beef stew, whereas I couldn’t get enough of the chicken katsu. Our hotel was about 20 miles away but didn’t mind the drive there.
On the other hand, the butter mochi was just okay, but in our opinions, did not live up to other reviewers’ descriptions. There really wasn’t anything wrong with it, perhaps it wasn’t our kind of dessert. The texture is soft and chewy, and like others have mentioned repeatedly, it does taste very similar to the filipino dessert cassava cake.

Whole in the wall. But excellent food. The portions are huge and the taste is amazing. I had the chicken teriyaki which was great. The chicken katsu was probably the best I’ve tasted.

One of best plate lunch spots on the Island. Tucked
away in a Industrial park area of Lihue, this unassuming restaurant is definitely the go to local hang. Our plate lunch today consisted of Chicken Katsu and fresh Kajiki (, marlin) with Ogo poke. Of course our plates came with Mac salad and steamed rice. All freshly made and service with a smile, just the way it always should be. The joint is busy with locals and tourists alike. Outdoor seating is available
for your dining pleasure, it’s called picnic benches.
Check out this place for a taste of Island grinds, you won’t regret it. Remain Feral as always.

How to Kick off your Hawaiian Vacation:
1) Arrive at airport.
2) Pick up rental car.
3) Ask Google where a good lunch plate place is.
4) End up at Mark’s Place.
5) Grab a Spam musubi to tide you over. Enjoy the sesame seeds inside but wish the spam slice wasn’t so thin!
6) Order a couple combo plates and go to your Chicken Katsu happy place. (But next time skip the underwhelming Korean chicken.)
7) Watch your Better Half devour his loco moco /​beef stew /​chicken katsu combo in record time.
8) Appreciate the healthier side options like brown rice and a well intentioned but overdressed iceberg lettuce salad.
9) Sabatoge yourself by getting a hefty square of butter mochi for later.

Beef teriyaki was my favorite! we went here twice so got to try 4 dishes between the two of us.
The prices are reasonable, and food delicious.
Be sure to try some of their desserts. The gluten free cookies were amazing!
Also you can BYOB to enjoy at their outside seating area.

Authentic Hawaiian food. Hidden in the middle of an industrial park is this gem. Outdoor seating only on picnic tables.
Chicken katsu, large portion. Seriously 3 of my kids shared this and didn’t finish it. But they loved it. My husband had this too and it was nice and crispy good. Great sauce too. Loved the chow mein under the chicken.
Teriyaki beef plate was perfectly tender and moist. Tasty dressing on the green salad too.
The Korean chicken was great. Little balls of deep fried chicken.
Last was the mahi mahi special. Delicious fish with a nice pineapple salsa!
Awesome service too. Very helpful and kind.
Tried mochi for the first time too. Always seen it but never tried it. It was surprisingly really good.
