My wife and I were looking for an ice cream place for a while and most of them in Northern Massachusetts and southern Maine seemed to be already closed for the winter. We happened across John’s on our way to Bar Harbor and we had no idea the gem we had found! The man behind the counter(who we can only assume was John) was very friendly and clearly very experienced with ice cream. We made the comment about how everyone else is closed already and he quickly replied with«It’s strange isn’t it? Considering that ice cream was invented in the winter before freezers came around…» We really liked the variety of choices available, prices, and friendliness. Highly recommended and deserving of 5 stars!

Got the ginger and peanut butter crunch. So good and worth the stop! Good thing I don’t live here or I’d be here all the time.

Delicious homemade sorbet for our dairy allergic kids. Ginger ice cream was terrific. A must stop!

My favorite ice cream stand! Glad we do not live closer! The ginger is my #1, chocolate and candied orange peel or raspberry cream ties for second. I haven’t tried anything else… Can’t get past my first three loves!

Easily the best Ice Cream in the United States. John has been making Ice cream for more than 45 years and the consistency in texture and flavor of all varieties show how well he has learned his craft. His Peanut Butter Crunch is amazing, especially when paired with his Cookies and Cream in a bowl. Home-made ice cream sandwiches are available from the coolers inside. Makes Ben and Jerry’s comparable flavors such as Pistachio,(yum!) taste like fat free imitations.

I’m an ice cream freak and this is some of the best ice cream ice ever had! A must stop if you’re in the area. Even if you’re not it’s a must visit!

I have yet to have a so-so flavor there! The quadruple chocolate is the best. The various fruit and cream flavors are fantastic. Just got some lemon custard. The vanilla custard was better than Haagen Das vanilla.

A real impressive ice cream stand. Everything here is homemade, including the flavors that are added to the ice creams, and it shows up in the palate. Great choices of flavors, get the chocolate and orange peel, with it’s slight frozen and soft candied orange bits. Lemon custard has one of the most refreshing lemon flavors and sweetness in a dessert I’ve had. The lemon flavor is zesty, bright, and a real great natural lemon sweetness. The homemade pistachio is unreal, it is unlike any pistachio ice cream I have ever had, it really makes me rethink how that flavor is supposed to taste. Prices are real reasonable. Good service too and you can get a sampling taste of anything as well. This guy really knows what he is doing. Also they even make their own ice cream sandwiches AND… if you want a special flavored ice cream sandwich… call them ahead and they will make ahead of time for you to pick up. Just really excellent ice cream.

John’s ice cream is fantastic! I time my travel to the hours that John’s is open and have been known to reschedule travel days during the off-season to get my ice cream fix. My favorite flavor is pistachio(no green food coloring or burnt almond extract). Maple walnut, butter pecan, coffee, strawberry rhubarb, pumpkin and many other flavors are all great… It is not unusual to see customers with out of state plates filling coolers to stock up for the winter on their way back home.

Excellent ice cream, tied with Tubby’s in Winthrop for the best of the summer. Peanut Butter Crunch had vanilla ice cream with lots of peanut butter swirled through and chocolate cookies. If you are a PB lover, check out my photo. A kid’s scoop is 2.65 and a regular scoop is 3.65, about average in the area for good-quality ice cream. The lemon custard ice cream was very good too with a nice tart lemon flavor. They stay open until the middle of December I think.

This place has to be the best ice cream place on earth. I’ve never had better ice cream in my 33 years on earth. I go to Maine every summer for the 4th of July weekend. This place is one of my have to go spots while there. The blackberries and cream is by far my favorite. If you’re ever in Belfast please do yourself a favor, STOPHERE.

This place was just okay. Certainly not worthy of the 5 stars given by other reviewers. Their fruit flavors(blueberries and cream and then I think the other was strawberry rhubarb) were better than their chocolatey flavors. The chocolatey flavors were strictly standard. It’s not that the ice cream here was bad… it was fine. I just don’t think it was amazing.

I agree, John’s rocks. Intense berry flavor in the berries n crème, perfect peanut butter, smooth and rich deep chocolate. Small place, not a lot of flavor choices(maybe 15?) but worth the drive if you’re in Camden/Rockland or Belfast or Augusta.

This is a real sleeper, with perfect texture and a lot of care with flavors. Fruit in sweet cream is a specialty, blackberries and cream is a rare example. 8⁄08
